Just another government program. BTW, we already have NASA and the USAF.

Because Trump wants to spend $8 BILLION over the next five years getting this thing started. What a fucking waste.

Couple of thoughts---

Absolutely no way this happens by 2020 like they want it to.

DoD needs improvement in space defense but it can do it in better, and cheaper, ways than a whole new service branch. Space Corps would be much more sensible.

This is just classic Trump self-promotion. He's already fundraising off the logos! Amazing.

My sense from today is that this whole Space Force nonsense was a rushed decision by DoD because 45 is the CiC and what he says goes. Nobody there really wants this shit.

Congress will totally water this down, no way there's a new branch of the military in 2020, especially when the Blue Wave rolls into DC in November.

What an amazing world we live in. PEW PEW!

The military is white man's welfare.

Space Corps, like the Marine Corps. It would be within the Air Force, with its own commander in chief.

DoD space acquisition has been troubled for years---way overbudget and blown deadlines. The USAF also treats space as a red headed stepchild. It raids space budgets for another shiny new fighter jet.

Better?

There really is only one reason this makes sense. It eliminates the traditional interservice cockblocking that is a long held tradition in the military. The Chairforce and Navy have been squabbling over how to divy up nuke deterent dollars for as long as there has been nukes.

As for unis, they just have to go old school trekky. And use Navy rank structure just like ST did.....just to piss off the Chairforce.

Hard to believe there is not already a space force when looking at the huge "black budget". And it's been huge for decades. Maybe this is a way to break the news to the public.....

DoD knows it has to better communicate the space threat beyond "it's a threat" to successfully sell this to the public. It's doing a horrible job at it. This rollout was terrible and the backlash will grow once Congress returns.

No Republican in Congress will utter a critical word about this or anything else Trump before the mid-terms.
With the possible exception of a few that are retiring.

Well at least they have a new logo that works. It's about as realistic as the concept itself.

If this is done correctly it could be a good thing.

By making it its own Force, it’s expenditures would be more visible. It should then compete for DoD dollars. NASA could then be rolled into this new Space Force and it’s research/exploration mission transfered as well. All NASA assets would be transferred to this group as well. NASA’s budget is transfered as well.

At the same time the Air Force’s budget should be reduced. Yes there would be a few new positions and duplication, but it wouldn’t take a ton of new appropriations.

The problems with this approach would be the GOP in FL and the Dems in CA for starters. They would fight the loss of NASA in their areas.

Make no mistake though if Nancy Pelosi suggested this the Dems on this board would eat it up. Same sandwich, different wrapper.

But this could be a good move. No doubt government will screw it up.

I'm sure that those veterans who visit VA medical centers on a regular or semi-regular basis will be thrilled that tRump is throwing away $8 Billion.

tRump sure does support the troops....

Anything short of “This is an asinine idea” is eating it up in my book.

Bullshit. This isn't one of those Nixon going to China ideas, this is just the biggest government boondoggle since Homeland Security.
But this could be a good move. No doubt government will screw it up.
Nope, it will be a fucking disaster.

I'll go on the record:

This is an asinine idea.

But I'm still eager to see the uniforms. I think mylar stripes would be rad. And helmets should be some variant of what the Ducks wear.

The full bill is supposed to be unveiled in November.....which means it will happen after that.

Coincidence? Of course not.

There are no links.

You and those like you (white liberals) don't like that sort of shit, along with the minority pandering, than the rest of us do, so you don't cheerlead for it. You just sit there uncomfortably, look the other way and dismiss it as unimportant. But you won't condemn it because you know it is necessary to keep the brown folks on the plantation.

Trouble is, some of the brown folks are wising up. TDS has exposed you fukkers for what you are. As more and more of them get actual jobs, the likes of which Barry said were gone for good, the more they will stop listening to the sheep and their "racist" bleats.

Nahhh, no mylar.

Keep it old school Trekkie. And yes, that does mean the females have to wear miniskirts.

I will admit, mylar would be badass. Maybe for full dinner dress unis.

I’m going to go against the general grain of the board here and say that militarizing space is a prudent idea. Like everything else, if you don’t get in front and take the reins strategically and then operationally, we will find ourselves in terrible trouble.

The Chinese have a long view of this and are actively working to take the high ground in terms of anti-satellite capability and other measures against us. The Russians are also working hard to create an anti-satellite force to negate our technological edge. If there is one thing that became clear to our adversaries from Desert Storm, it is that our superiority on the battlefield is largely drawn from our abilities to leverage information instantly against our enemies. Initially it was GPS (something the Russians have attempted to emulate with their own system, only with poorer results), but that has expanded to banking, communications, and mapping. And as our society becomes increasingly dependent on integrated tech, it also becomes our Achilles heel.

By either dominating space to our advantage or governing it in a manner that prohibits others from dominating us, we ensure that all of the stuff we take for granted remains in place. Make no mistake, if we do not press our advantage in space now, we will soon find ourselves on the outside looking in. Everything is at stake here: Information, the primacy of the dollar, privacy, intellectual property, the physical space around our planet (China is working at declaring the airspace and space-space above her borders to be solely hers), communications, and internet availability, among many, many other critical areas are in grave danger if we do not control the high ground.

Yes, it will be costly. Yes, there will be SNAFUs. And yes, there will be bureaucratic bungling. But all of that pales in comparison to a world where our enemies dictate to us what we can do— and the cost of that would be life threatening.
