LEBANON, Ohio — President Trump praised the Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee while asking African American voters to “honor us” by voting Republican at an Ohio rally that included an unexpected and provocative monologue on America’s Civil War history.

Addressing an open-air rally of around 4,000 supporters, Trump appeared buoyant as he declared that Lee was a “true great fighter” and “great general.” He also said President Abraham Lincoln once had a “phobia” of the Southern general, whose support of slavery has made his legacy a heavily contested and divisive issue.

The comments came during an anecdote about Ohio-born President Ulysses S. Grant’s alleged drinking problems. “So Robert E. Lee was a great general. And Abraham Lincoln developed a phobia. He couldn’t beat Robert E. Lee,” Trump said. “Robert E. Lee was winning battle after battle after battle.”

“And Abraham Lincoln came home, he said, ‘I can’t beat Robert E. Lee,’ ” Trump said. “They said to Lincoln, ‘You can’t use him anymore, he’s an alcoholic.’ And Lincoln said, ‘I don’t care if he’s an alcoholic, frankly, give me six or seven more just like him.’ He started to win.”

Minutes earlier, Trump had hailed African American unemployment numbers and asked black voters to “honor us” by voting Republican in November. “Get away from the Democrats,” he told them. “Think of it: We have the best numbers in history. . . . I think we’re going to get the African American vote, and it’s true.” He also celebrated hip-hop artist Kanye West’s visit to the Oval Office on Thursday, adding: “What he did was pretty amazing.”

What’s your point?

He was in Ohio and obviously building up a story about native Ulysses S. Grant. Lee and Grant were arguably two of the greatest military generals in human history.

And Robert E. Lee is considered a great general. But Trump said it so it was awful.

You know who's a better General than Robert E Lee? The drunk who beat him.

Lee did the best he could, for the most part, with what he had. The South was probably doomed from the start.

Lee was considered the best General in the Army. He was offered command of the Union Army by Lincoln, but felt his loyalty was to his home state.

It's too bad he didn't suck. The war could have been ended much sooner.

So, this was in a speech given by Trump praising Grant? And the shameless press takes the quote "Lee was a great general" ?

Figures. Fake news. Just like every other day.

Would anyone ever doubt that Lee was anything less than brilliant, as a general?

It is too bad that McClellan was a cock gobbling idiot who didn't know how to use superior manpower and firepower. Most of Lee's alleged brilliance rests on the failures of McClellan to do his damn job and annihilate the army of Northern Virginia. Grant understood this simple truth and never forgot it.

McClellan had his army well-prepared for battle, but he didn’t want his soldiers’ uniforms getting dirty and was constantly paranoid that he was outnumbered, when that was never the case.

Lee, on the other hand, was considerably outnumbered in just about every battle and won against all odds. Luckily, not at Gettysburg where he fukked up royally.

Maybe the source you cited should consider cracking a book sometime.

the Southern general, whose support of slavery
Robert E Lee wrote:The steamer also brought the President's message to Cong; & the reports of the various heads of Depts; the proceedings of Cong: &c &c. So that we are now assured, that the Govt: is in operation, & the Union in existence, not that we had any fears to the Contrary, but it is Satisfactory always to have facts to go on. They restrain Supposition & Conjecture, Confirm faith, & bring Contentment: I was much pleased with the President's message & the report of the Secy of War, the only two documents that have reached us entire. Of the others synopsis [sic] have only arrived. The views of the Pres: of the Systematic & progressive efforts of certain people of the North, to interfere with & change the domestic institutions of the South, are truthfully & faithfully expressed. The Consequences of their plans & purposes are also clearly set forth, & they must also be aware, that their object is both unlawful & entirely foreign to them & their duty; for which they are irresponsible & unaccountable; & Can only be accomplished by them through the agency of a Civil & Servile war. In this enlightened age, there are few I believe, but what will acknowledge, that slavery as an institution, is a moral & political evil in any Country. It is useless to expatiate on its disadvantages. I think it however a greater evil to the white man than to the black race, & while my feelings are strongly enlisted in behalf of the latter, my sympathies are more strong for the former. The blacks are immeasurably better off here than in Africa, morally, socially & physically. The painful discipline they are undergoing, is necessary for their instruction as a race, & I hope will prepare & lead them to better things. How long their subjugation may be necessary is known & ordered by a wise Merciful Providence. Their emancipation will sooner result from the mild & melting influence of Christianity, than the storms & tempests of fiery Controversy. This influence though slow, is sure. The doctrines & miracles of our Saviour have required nearly two thousand years, to Convert but a small part of the human race, & even among Christian nations, what gross errors still exist! While we see the Course of the final abolition of human Slavery is onward, & we give it the aid of our prayers & all justifiable means in our power, we must leave the progress as well as the result in his hands who sees the end; who Chooses to work by slow influences; & with whom two thousand years are but as a Single day. Although the Abolitionist must know this, & must See that he has neither the right or power of operating except by moral means & suasion, & if he means well to the slave, he must not Create angry feelings in the Master; that although he may not approve the mode which it pleases Providence to accomplish its purposes, the result will nevertheless be the same; that the reasons he gives for interference in what he has no Concern, holds good for every kind of interference with our neighbors when we disapprove their Conduct; Still I fear he will persevere in his evil Course. Is it not strange that the descendants of those pilgrim fathers who Crossed the Atlantic to preserve their own freedom of opinion, have always proved themselves intolerant of the Spiritual liberty of others?

Not exactly a stinging missive of opposition, but certainly not supportive.

Know what else REL was opposed to?

Confederate monuments.

I will allow that Lee was a solid tactician. But he was a lousy strategic thinker. If he understood a lick of long-term strategy he would have stuck with the Union to begin with.

Yes he fought defense rather well. But every time he tried to bring the war to a close it was a disaster, even against some of the most inept Union commanders of the war. And when he finally faced a General who would not turn and run at the slightest bit of defeat, it was over.

Caesar and Alexander not only routinely beat armies that outnumbered them greatly but were able to gain and hold territories after their victories. All Lee had to show for after all that blood was the same poor strategic position that he had before.
The painful discipline they are undergoing, is necessary for their instruction as a race, & I hope will prepare & lead them to better things. How long their subjugation may be necessary is known & ordered by a wise Merciful Providence.
Let's just be real freaking blunt about this. A farmer on a soldier's salary can't afford the upkeep of a plantation home and estate without free labor. That's why Lee never freed his slaves.

In fact Lee had the opportunity to free slaves that were not even his. As executor of George Parke Custis' will, he was given five years to free Custis' slaves. The slaves were under the impression they were to be freed right away and they petitioned Lee to be freed. The results of Lee's refusal to free these slaves resulted in the slaves attempting to escape and Lee ordering the slaves to be whipped 50 times and for the wounds to be soaked in brine.

I suppose this is what he meant by "painful discipline." I would call it sadism.

Every day you step your KYOA skills up a notch. At this point, I doubt even Chuck Norris could kick your ass better than you.

This was in no way, Trump praising Lee. It was him praising Grant. Now, if you want to argue that praising a long dead general/president/drunk is a waste of time, you might have a point.
