The judge seemed to take particular umbrage at the suggestion made by Flynn and his supporters, just before the sentencing, that he had been duped by the FBI. Early in the hearing, Sullivan forced Flynn to admit publicly that he knew lying to the bureau was illegal and that he was guilty of a crime. Later, the judge pointed to an American flag in his D.C. courtroom as he berated the former three-star general for his misdeeds.
“Arguably, that undermines everything this flag over here stands for,” the judge said. “Arguably, you sold your country out.”

What are the basing the “running” on? San Antonio is listed as I which would mean independent. However the city itself is a Democratic stronghold.

For a full eight minutes, U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan read aloud an inventory of Michael Flynn’s lies — describing his “disgust” that President Trump’s national security adviser sought to deceive FBI agents while “on the premises of the White House.”
Flynn, a retired general who is the highest-ranking Trump aide to plead guilty as part of the special counsel investigation, listened tensely, his face tight, as the judge ticked through his misdeeds.
This was not how Flynn’s supporters or Trump thought Tuesday’s sentencing hearing would unfold. They had pinned their hopes on Sullivan, an independent-minded jurist with a history of ferreting out prosecutorial misconduct, as the one who would reveal overreach by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III and the FBI. Some Flynn allies even speculated the judge might toss out Flynn’s guilty plea and clear his name.
Instead, the 71-year-old veteran jurist used his platform to puncture conspiracy theories that paint Flynn as a victim of deep-state persecution. And he reminded the country of a few simple creeds commonly held in courthouses but increasingly dismissed by the president’s allies: Lying to the FBI is against the law. Breaking the law is bad. People who work in the White House are supposed to be held to a higher standard.
“This is a very serious offense,” Sullivan told Flynn, even after Mueller’s prosecutors told the judge they agreed that Flynn should face little to no incarceration because he cooperated with their investigation.

Come on, give Melty some credit. There is some actual information here.
The 50 largest cities are mostly "run" by Democrats. Not sure what exactly that means, though. Mayor? City Council? Police Department?
The 50 largest cities all had murders in 2017. One could put the totals in numerical order but, as Dins implied, that doesn't tell you much without knowing the population, or per capita murder rate.
Not sure if Melty knows what "numerical order" means.
As usual with his brilliant posts, Melty seems to be able to read something in the information that isn't actually there and, without explaining his thought process (assuming there is one), can't understand why nobody else see what he sees.
Once he reads this post he'll come and tell me who my favorite news sources are.

Apparently so, since the Top 7 are all D. However, it becomes less surprising considering the D/R/I breakdown of the top 50, which is 34/13/3. Given there are ~2.5x more D than R, one would expect more D's near the top. But holding down the top 7, and 17 of the top 18, is (are?) still rather impressive.

Not that it matters much, but regarding Portland, there's two things to consider: A) The mayor of Portland has no mayoral powers. He's just another council member (his only power beyond that is assigning bureaus to council members). Apparently the only major city left with this extremely outdated system. B) The council (and mayor) are technically all "I." The races are non-partisan, and no party affiliation is listed for any candidate. That said, all 5 council members (and the incoming new member)are absolute flaming liberal D's... not "garden variety D's," but "extreme left D's."
Portland has extremely low rates of violent crime, and extremely high rates of property crime (sup homeless). A huge chunk of the homicides are gang violence. But as mentioned, the extreme leftist council decided that keeping track of gang violence was rayyyyycist (in the whitest city in the country), so it's hard to pin the exact number that was gang-related. But it's likely over half (and maybe quite a bit more).
Of those 27, 12 were from gunshots (2 of those were police capping suspects -- a slow year for PPB).

Even though that line contains a borderline grammatical error... but it rhymes, so it gets a pass.
In my defense, that was a rather meandering thought I clacked out.
