The season started a few days ago.

3 down, probably more to go.

Crossing the bar in 14 foot seas (probably higher at the bar)... at night. I'll fucking pass, thank you very much. Crossing in 4 footers in the daytime is rich enough for my blood.

Looks like 51 degrees today. If you could get in a survival suit you might have a chance, but bar crossings are not usually made in survival suits. It was the first day you could drop pots on the commercial crab season. Pretty much everybody stayed in port except a few. The seas were closer to 30 feet on the bar at Newport yesterday afternoon. Looks like the boat owner from Newport must have convinced his chowd buddies to come run the season with him or needed a captain.

Their one local hand tells his friends "this is my last trip, these guys don't know what they're doing." Seas turn rough, everyone heads back into port. The clowns don't answer the radio when the Coast Guard calls, so the USCG hits them up on the cell phone. Dudes decline an escort, claiming "we got this." USCG escorts them anyway, and the stupid fuckers don't listen. Miss the mouth altogether,and roll their way onto the beach.

So they could only make 2 knots under their own way, which translates to the boat is a sitting duck and completely incapable of doing anything to help itself.
