Paris' Notre Dame Cathedral on fire - firefighters

PARIS, April 15 (Reuters) - A fire broke out at Notre Dame Cathedral in central Paris on Monday afternoon, a spokesman from the fire department said.

Smoke could be seen billowing out from the top of the medieval cathedral, as flames lept out besides its two bell towers, a Reuters witness said.

A major operation was under way, the fire department added, while a city hall spokesman said on Twitter that the area was being cleared. (Reporting by Sybille de la Hamaide and Simon Carraud, Editing by Sarah White)

I find this incredibly painful to watch. Makes me very glad that my wife and I visited when we did, because restoring the cathedral will take decades just based on the cost alone.

It could be seen as a metaphor for the state of Christianity in Europe, a relic of a bygone era which ultimately is destroyed by carelessness and neglect. A thing of beauty turned into ashes from the hollowing out of its original purpose and turning it into a tourist attraction.

I don’t think so. Notre Dame took over two centuries to build and that was with the dedicated focus to complete the task. Nowadays, the French have little discretionary income and the Catholic Church is under financial strain themselves due to internal problems long left unattended. Perhaps because it is such a significant cathedral it will be restored over time, but when that will happen, who knows? It just makes me glad to have seen it a couple of times during my life and to have shared one of those with my wife.

As for what caused this, I suppose it could be an accident, but given the euro's tendency to even more ridiculous levels of safety than we have, it is a bit hard to believe. If this was truly an accident, it was a mind boggling level of carelessness/incompetence.

I also find it hard to believe that every inch of that place wasn't under video surveillance.

A bracketed shot using HDR is what you would need. Open Camera on Android is pretty good for that purpose.
