He won the Washington Open this past week.

Check out some of his best moments.

Half of his game is stunning shot-making and half of his game is... fucking with people.

My new favorite player.

If he took the lack of curvature of the erf into his game he would be even better.

Kyrgios is a joke and should not be taken seriously as a top tier tennis player. ESPN’s hype of his match vs Nadal at Wimbledon was completely overdone and had little to do with tennis and everything to do with Nick’s antics.

If you want to follow a true up and comer, check out American Taylor Fritz. Still a young kid but he’s slowly climbing the ranks and has some legitimate game.

Kyrgios is #27 in the world and has won two titles this year.

I don't see how he is a joke who shouldn't be taken seriously as a top tier player.

He's got the tools to potentially beat anyone on a given day.

I definitely understand the criticisms of him, and I am half-joking by saying he is my favorite player.

I would never tell a youth player to emulate him.
There are times when he has tanked matches, too.
Or at least it very much looks that way.
That's not kool.

On the other hand, you cannot watch those highlights and not laff at it.

He's doing the kind of crazy shit we used to do at the end of practice when it was just fuck-around-time.

But he's doing it... for real.

Between the legs shots in the middle of a rally, for no real reason??

Sometimes a guy comes along in a sport and turns the sport on its head with unorthodox methods.

But to really pull it off they have to have a little bit of game, as Kygrios does.

Mark Fidrych comes to mind.

I like to laff, so thumbs up to Nick Kygrios!

Full stop right there. Exactly why he's a joke. He has the talent to be a top five player-- that is indisputable. But listen to him in his post match interviews. He doesn't give a fuck about that. He just wants to make his money, have his fame and fuck around on the tennis court.

Being a champion is not at the top of his priority list.

Rafa summed him up perfectly at Wimby.

Physical talent, yes.
I think he lacks mentally and emotionally.

Tennis is an extremely demanding sport, and I think most sports fans don't realize it.

There are no time-outs, nobody is coming off the bench to spell you if you are tired or "out of it."
You can't run out the clock to victory -- and you have to win every point to take it to the finish line.

You're on your own and you have to figure it our for yourself.

If it's a bad day for you, you have to find a way, mentally, physically, and emotionally to nut it up and hang in there.
If not, you are getting rolled, no doubt.

The very top players are fit as hell, mentally, physically, and emotionally.
It is a rare breed.

You're right that Kygrios has not been able to measure up to that.
He's #27 in the world.

However, he beat two top 10 players this week and...

The result improves his win-loss record against top-10 opponents this year to 5-1 – a winning percentage of 83, best on the ATP Tour in 2019.

Nick Kyrgios dismisses an American dude named "Johnson" -- who is sporting a sweet p0rnstache.

Toys with him here-and-there.

And Johnson barks (f-bombs) at Kyrgios in frustration. :)

This is what they paid for. This is what they want.

Nick is always teetering on the line of turning in a Cincinnati-esque performance. Last night he was able to keep his shit together (with scotch tape) and actually played pretty well.

I don’t expect him to do that for many more rounds (like our old pal Jimmy C could even at age 39). He was making a scene with the umpire last night for no particular reason at all, that’s what was pissing off Johnson (who should’ve just ignored it). Just his usual antics.

Kyrgios figures to win his next round (opponent is 104 in the world).

A 3rd round match-up with A. Rublev might be a real battle, though.

Rublev advances.

7-6, 7-6, 6-3.

Kid is tough.

Kygrios is OUT.
No more fun and games.

I am most definitely for capitalism and freedom. Dude has every right to do whatever he wants. Sure, he’ll make some sick bank. Good for him if he does. Doubtful he’ll ever win a slam at this pace. But hope he does. I hear he’s a solid guy off screen.

R. Federer is taken out in 5 sets by G. Dimitrov

Dimitrov v.Medvedev in one semi.

Doesn't stir up much interest.

Nadal and Berrettini through to the semis.

Berrettini has some guns, but he had to go a tough 5 sets to knock of Monfils in the quarters.
Don't think he'll have enough in the tank to handle Nadal.

I like Rafa and Medvedev to get through to the finals.

You don’t read very well. This thread was about why he’s not a champion though has the talent to be. The fact that he makes a boatload of money is secondary to the reality that he’ll likely never hold up a grand slam trophy.

I read just fine and I know what the thread is about. My question is: why do you care? You are a klepto so all you care about is money. That IS the scoreboard for a klepto. Why do you care if he gets some dumb trophy if he has already won the real game?

Both in straight sets.

Medvedev enjoys being the "villain," which is rather amusing.

It's hard for me to see Nadal losing this one, although it could be a struggle.

I'll take Rafa in 4 sets.

Major #19 -- just one behind R. Federer.

Medvedev gave him a helluva battle.

Amazing match. It’s easy to disregard Medvedev based on his somewhat loopy and gawky form, but dude has serious game and is a legit top fiver right now.

As for the chase for major titles, Nadal is pretty much guaranteed to line up another major or five, as still nobody can even come close to taking him down at Roland Garros. When he picks up one elsewhere it’s like a bonus.

Roger does not have that built in at any of the four majors. He came damn close at Wimby in July but I question whether he’ll sniff another one before he retires. Djokovic certainly not done winning majors, he may end up with the most of the big three. Again, unless Rafa can rattle off 20 in Paris (he’s at 12).

You are right.

When I first saw Medvedev I thought his game looked very awkward.

Watching him more, I appreciate what he is doing.

He hits the ball flatter than most everyone else.
He has good size, court coverage, and power.

The guy is an excellent hard court player.
I could see him winning the U.S. Open and the Aussie Open in the future.

At the risk of caring too much about men's tennis------>what does it mean to "hit the ball flat?"

Hitting flat means you are hitting the ball with less top spin.

What does that mean? More power?

Re: Nick Kyrgios is a trip

Posted: Mon Sep 09, 2019 2:16 pm
by Softball Bat
Generally, yes.

A flat ball is more of a "line drive" and a ball with topspin is more of a "rainbow."

The rainbow is safer because it clears the net higher and the topspin will then force the ball down so that it lands in tbe court.

The flat ball is not as safe, because it has lower net clearance.
But the flat ball is more penatrating and offensive.

Generally.

Jimmy Connors is an example of a guy who hit the ball very flat.

Yes Screwy and to SB’s comment, other than margin of error there is also an element of where in the opponent’s “strike zone” you are placing the ball with respect to the court surface.

Just like a baseball batter, any tennis player has an ideal “spot” off the bounce they prefer to hit their best ball.

Take the three main court surfaces— grass, hard and clay. And the three types of ball flights— backspin (slice), flat and topspin.

Grass is the fastest surface, meaning the ball tends to stay low. Players that hit the ball flat and use a lot of slice do well. In the olden days, almost everyone played to get to the net and hit volleys (balls that don’t bounce) as to increase their advantage.

Conversely, clay is the slowest surface and affects the ball by making it bounce higher and stay in the air for a longer period of time. Players that grind out long points and use a lot of topspin are tops here (see Nadal). Deep shots with topspin on clay are deadly, as the ball pops up and forces the opponent to take the next shot ‘on the rise’ (requires great Agassi-esque timing) or forces them into a bad court position (far behind the baseline). Clay is also the best surface for the body, as you can slide into shots without hard stops.

Naturally hard courts are the middle ground and require a good all court game. Hence, SB’s comment about flat shots.

On a side note, I got to see the red clay at Roland Garros (known in the US as the French Open) live this June and it was freaking amazing.

Double Secret Probation

Nick Kyrgios, the temperamental and talented Australian tennis player, was set to be put on probation for
six months by the ATP Tour.

The men’s tour announced on Thursday that Kyrgios, 24, had been found to have committed a major offense
under the tour’s code of conduct. The tour cited a “pattern of behavior” in the past 12 months of verbally
abusing officials. But he will not have to immediately serve a suspension.

Kyrgios, who is ranked 27th, was fined $25,000 and given a suspension of 16 ATP tournament weeks, but the
fine and suspension were deferred....
