California's new law AB5

So this law goes into effect on Wednesday and will change the work classification for many workers. It was intended to make "gig economy" workers like Uber and Lyft drivers employees of the company they drive for. It turns out Uber has said that they still will not make their drivers employees. Instead they are making changes to their driver platform prior to Jan 1st, which they feel will keep them outside of the new law.

As it is now drivers do not know where the rider is going when a trip pops up on the app. This is done to prevent drivers from not accepting short rides or rides to neighborhoods that are less desirable. Once the driver accepts the ride, then the destination is shown. The new California update to the driver software will now show the driver's the passengers entire route and allow the driver to choose to accept or decline the ride. Minority groups are worried that this will prevent drivers from accepting rides where the destination is less desirable destinations, ie "poor, economically depressed, higher crime rate, etc."

Further many professional groups are preparing lawsuits or have filed suit over this law. Take for example a professional photographer. This person shoots sporting events, red carpet events, concerts, among other things. If this photographer sells more than a photo or two a month to the LA Times, then this photographer would need to be classified as an employee of the paper, and therefore entitled to benefits. This would also prevent the photographer from selling any other photos to other outlets as the Times owns the rights to all photos generated by their employees. See also freelance journalists.

Another group that is against this are truckers, couriers, and small package delivery folks. Many of these groups own their own truck, or van and contract out their services to companies. Often time these people will work for months at a time for the same company, and now would need to be an employee to do this.

Many of these people want no part of being an employee, but they will now be required to become an employee or to accept less business than they have been. Lefty industries is following this closely, but as of now the feeling is pilots will not be part of this, just as realtors are not. That could change of course, but we are waiting to see.

I can't imagine this law last long, not with the number of folks from both sides of the spectrum that are against this.

Discuss.

- benefiting from a shit circumstance or law, doesn't change the fact a law or circumstance is shit.
- Uber's response is why Universal income is retarded, on the macro scale
- Prostitutes and escorts used to always spell out NO BLACK MEN. they hot away with it because its their bodies. This is the same deal: its the drivers bodies. its the drivers choice.

uber can create incentives to go to those neighborhoods. thats how this works.

Well if Uber uses cash as an incentive, they can't pass that cost on to riders without opening themselves up to lawsuits.

I see that Vox has already cut ties with a large number of writers for their sports coverage.

Not sure how we are dodging this, but thankfully we are so far. If they change their minds, then most private pilots not already company employees will have to move or find new jobs.

BAM!!!
Brilliant take IB.
Prostitutes aren't stupid. Years of getting beat up, stiffed and abused by balacks, has taken a toll on hard working hookers
Can you blame them for saying no to these undesirables?
Not to mention, some of the petite hookers cannot physically accept their extra large junk.
It's a matter of physics.

Same thing with uber drivers
Why should they risk severe bodily harm or even death, by driving to bad crime infested neighborhoods?

May you get in an uber with a gay sadist driver who takes you thru a very undesirable neighborhood.
Merry Christmas.

EAP, prostitutes and escorts say no black men because black men are their pimps, and black men don't want the competition. And blacks have a bad reputation of nickle and diming/trying to get freebies. Still, their body, their choice. Kierland would know more about this, experience wise than theoretically.

Kierland, your thoughts?

Drivers should be able to get to decide whether they are comfortable with a fare, an origin or a destination. So yes, I agree. Hazard pay to hazardous areas, like military contracting.

Left Seater, what incentives can they use, then?

They could use things like moving to the front of the line at popular pick up spots, ie airports, stadiums, arenas etc.

But how do they offer cash incentives for these areas without charging the rider? Uber is still losing money overall. And charging a fee for certain “poor” areas sure seems like a slam dunk law suit.

IB.
I SAID that!!!
Go re read what I said.
They "stiff" them, not just literally with their extra large junk,
But "stiff" also means, they don't pay. A freebie.

And they're rough with these little white escorts. They beat em' up bang them up treat them like dirty little whores. Don't these undesirable thugs realize that these girls are someone's daughter?

LOL!!

You can't actually be a woman. Prostitutes have little to no say in the matter. Most of them are actual, no shit slaves in the sickest, most degrading way humanly possible.

Most hookers working the illegal side are freelance. They do their thing and nobody even hears bout it, nobody gets beat up and it’s pretty mundane . Street level is different and there are a lot of black people in the trade and violence and whatnot is common no matter the race.
Legal is safe and all the girls are subcontractors renting rooms like hairdressers.

Depends.

Also depends on comparison with prior homelife, and culture.

only the gangsters won in prohibition. same with criminalized prostitution.

street level hooking isn't about hooking, it's about other things isn't it?

IB deserves a rack here.

Prostitution and drug abuse aren't good things. None of us would wish it on our children, BUT, it exists. And being forced into an illegal status makes it 1000X worse.

Did we not learn a fucking thing from prohibition?
