I often complain about how dirty SF has come (feces, needles). But I’ve been here 16 hours. Walked around Chinatown, Financial District, went a little south of Market. I haven’t seen feces or needles yet. Are the streets of San Francisco getting cleaner? At least *some* streets?

I'm guessing the folks in Chinatown take better care of their area. We were there in 1994 and did not see one "bum" (as we called them back then) around.

San Francisco isn't for everyone. Especially if you grew up a hillbilly in West Virginia.
The San Francisco Bay Area is the most diverse, educated, and innovative region in the World. And it's not close.
if you hate living on the Pacific Ocean surrounded by Redwood trees and mountains. With perfect weather where you can go surfing and 3 hours later be skiing in the highest mountains in the United States outside of Alaska. Next to one of the deepest lakes in the World.
Be surrounded by World Class sports franchises and academic institutions for entertainment.
There's a reason why San Francisco was the original headquarters for the United Nations... then they realized how useless they are they gave it to New York.
New York likes useless stuff... just look at who is president.
The point being... the World sees San Francisco as the capital of the World.
Like I said, being surrounded by Arts, Culture, Natural beauty and some of the best wines in the World isn't for everyone.

At the same time it is also true that there is a much larger percentage of intellectuals, "elites," and significant people living in those places, as opposed to whatever fly over area you happen to live in.
