Coronavirus - Pandemic...or Opportunity?
Inovio Pharmaceuticals
A local San Diego company that's working on a COVID-19 vaccine.
I bought some of their stock on a whim on Feb 12 at $3.35.
Today, while the Dow lost 786 points this stock gained 64% to $7.48.
I wish my entire portfolio looked like this. Unfortunately it seems like most of my retirement is slowly going up in smoke.

Not actually too worried. I’m pretty well diversified.
Here’s another that hasn’t suffered too much.
I’ve been into Enphase since 2012 when I put up the magic shade tree.

Their stock was worth almost nothing three years ago. Now they're one of the dominant players in the solar PV industry.
Re: Coronavirus - Pandemic...or Opportunity?
Nice when you have a clear understanding of an industry can help you invest properly. I have a position in a turf equipment manufacturer that I used to work for regionally. Fiscal year ends in October when inventories are down and cash flow good and profits high. Sell some then and buy back in the spring when the stock price is down and roll it over again in Oct. Good for 10K every year.
Now we all know that the cock suckers in main stream media and the financial honks on the Street were flipping shit so fast it was driving the traded share volume stupid. I watched it a day or so and not touching my primary positions in Costco, I sold a couple of mutual fund accounts and played the Costco thing this last week and yesterday and today. I moved that stock 5 times in 2 days and made a very good profit. All inside my IRA's. Used the profits to add to my ATT position, and bought Dollar General, who plans to open 11,000 new stories in rural areas. I still have some cash sitting there and will watch the market tomorrow. I have all kinds of buy sell limits set so it becomes pretty easy, and making 2 to 3 grand a day has been awesome.

I don’t have the time to be that hands on in my investments. I am in for the long term play, still 15 years or so. I just take the monthly report and go thru that in detail. I also make sure that what is reflected in the report matches what I see online.

I wish I had time to do the day trader thing, but it can be a very dangerous game.
I bought some Invio stock three weeks ago on a total whim at $3.35.
The other day I put in a limit order to sell the entire lot at $10.00. When I saw this morning that it had hit $9.89 I decided to go ahead and dump it. It had dropped to $9.50 by the time I was able to pull the trigger, but still made a tidy profit on that. That's the first substantial "short term" capital gain I can actually remember taking, but it's in my IRA so it doesn't really matter.
When I rolled over all of my 401(K)s from various former employers a few years ago, I put 2/3 of it into a target fund robo-advisor IRA that I don't touch. Of the rest, I put about half into a group of exchange traded index funds that I also don't touch except to occasionally re-balance. The last part I held back to play around investing in individual stocks. Some have done OK. Some have not done OK. A few have done really well. Everything left in there is mostly "long" or will be at some point.

The other one I couldn't help playing around with is Enphase. I invested a few thousand there years ago at around $5.00 and saw it gradually drop to $0.65, at which point it wasn't even worth selling so I just left it alone. Then it started going up in 2018, gradually at first, until it hit something like $32.00. I was thinking holy shit, this is pretty cool. Then it fell to around $18.00 in November of last year, and I thought, WTF at this point I'm playing with other peoples' money so I tripled my position. At $40 I sold all of my original shares at a 700% profit. So now I have the shares I bought in November at $19.00 and it's sitting at $56.00 today.
I'm in this one for the long run, as Enphase is a leader in a large and growing industry. Inovio was a shot in the dark.

I haven’t hit any home runs like that that I know of. We have a broker where we pay him on the gain only. So it is in his best interest to maximize our gains. His percentage rises as does our gains.
We have also invested in two startups. Both were a bit of a long shot but one is actually bringing a product to market now and is looking promising. The other, seems to be floundering.

Re: Coronavirus - Pandemic...or Opportunity?
Down day today, I bought into Costco again, and increased my health care positions a bit, particularly in Abbive and Gilead who both have products to treat this corona virus bullshit. I have a limited amount I day trade with, and have buy and sell limits set on all those positions. I have been using the day trading profits to increase my other positions in some other stock groupings that I have.
Overall I am down a bit from the first of the year, but like my positions much more. Time will tell. My bro in law plays it big time. He has about 4 million in over all and day trades with about 250K. He has made about 18K the last week. He will be into about three of the movers today and will sell them at $ 10 a share profits most likely on Monday or Tuesday on the uptick.

What is Enphase doing right, company leadership-wise, that you profited from? What other companies do you see following Enphase's business model?Mikey wrote: ↑Thu Mar 05, 2020 8:35 pm The other one I couldn't help playing around with is Enphase. Don't be a tough guy, be a Jew on this one. Or Buffett. Or think outside the box of short term profits and losses.
Me, I only wish I had the money to buy these airline stocks as they plummet. When the bottom hits, there is going to be some sick money made on the upward climb back -- just like after 2008 and 2001. I agree with those who say we haven't come close to hitting bottom, yet, though.
shutyomouth's words of wisdom from two months ago, about what the media chooses to say versus not say, are still in effect.

I’m sure my trusts have stocks that go up and down, but I don’t look at it at all, and it wouldn’t matter much anyways as I’m the beneficiary not the trustee. I just cash the checks.

No, Appalachian dirt farmers. So probably Scot or Irish.

Re: Coronavirus - Pandemic...or Opportunity?
America has barely been testing people, compared to what S. Korea is doing, for example.
America's response has been woefully, ridiculously inadequate.
This lack of testing is going to rear it's ugly head and cause chaos in hospitals and care centers.
A large rash of closings and cancellations of services (schools, events, business operations, etc.), along with major supply chain disruption consequences are poised to begin.
Enjoy!

Wolftard can always be counted on to parrot the GOP line. In this case, it's that coronavirus is a hoax ginned up by Democrats to politically hurt Donald J Trump.

This can't hurt trump with any group of voters, except the low IQ sheep within the left wing socialist party, of which you're included.
