Recognize the guitarist?

Tony Iommi !

Glenn Cornick on bass. He left later to form Wild Turkey, a band I really like. Check out their album Battle Hymn. This was Iommi’s only gig with Tull. He went back to his band, Earth, which eventually did okay under some other name.

Nice find.

I saw Tull at the LA Forum in 1975 (War Child tour). Those guys put on a helluva show.

And I have a story about this. It was my sophomore year at UC San Diego and one of the guys in my dorm, David, was from Westwood (Los Angeles). His mother was dating some mucky muck at Warner Brothers and David said that he could get us four tickets to see Tull at the Forum. This was on a Monday night. So four of us (all guys of course) drove up to his mom's apartment in LA to pick up the tickets, and then headed over to the Forum in Inglewood. These were supposed to be ultra VIP seats, like front row center. So we went into the Forum with no problems at the entrance. The stage was set up with two runways going out into the crowd so that Ian Anderson could do his thing. Our seats were dead center between the runways in the front row...but they were occupied. Occupied by Robert Hilburn, at the time the music critic for the LA Times. WTF.

It turns out that Tull was doing a long run at the Forum, including both Monday Feb 3 and Monday Feb 10. Our tickets were for Feb 10. They didn't kick us out but somehow found us some other good seats, about three rows above the floor and halfway back. Really enjoyed the show.

So did I, in Nov or Dec '78. Last concert I attended before reporting to boot camp.

Saw Tull in ‘72 in Tuscaloosa…Thick As A Brick tour. Great seats. Ian was a wild man.

Girlfriend couldn’t go, but her friend, who had legs for days, went with me. The start of a new relationship!

You mean they actually have rock concerts in Alabama?

And here I thought you all were limited to jug bands and Protestant hymns.   ;-)

Yep, we had covered facilities, electricity and all that shit.

In all seriousness, there was a run of several years where UA had the biggest bands there were: Zeppelin, Tull, The Who, ELP, Yes, ABB, the Stones, Traffic (missed that one), and I think Hendrix.

Then at Auburn they got on a run of great bands, but not that monster level: Free, Faces, Doobies, Marshall Tucker Band, Little Feat.

The 70s were exceptional around here. Whoever was doing the booking was grabbing bands with open dates between an Atlanta show and New Orleans. Just checked: Hendrix in ‘69.
