Anchor Brewing, the country's oldest craft brewery is closing after 127 years.
https://www.cnn.com/2023/07/12/business ... index.html
They were purchased in 2017 by Sapporo, a Japanese brewer of mass produced beer, and apparently mismanaged into non-existence.
This has me a little worried, because they also bought San Diego County's biggest craft brewer, Stone, last year. It's probably 10x the size of Anchor, but this doesn't bode well. I may have to switch from "Big Sapporo" to "Big Kirin" next time we go out for sushi.

I have a bunch of the old original bottles in a box someplace. It and Sierra Nevada have always been the goto California craft beers in these parts. Until 805 got going of course.

This sucks, always enjoy this brewery.
Kierland, what's the story on 805, don't believe I've seen it on the east coast.

Bummer. Solid brewery. All five of those brews in the pic are money.

Made by Firestone Walker, good suds. Usually drink it while I’m doing my TT shows which is why the last hour is often kinda sketchy.

Thanks Smackie, unfortunately they are not within 100 miles of me.
I did go out and have an AS Porter.

Yeah 805 is the big craft brew now. They use a special process to brew it up. My grandfather worked closely with his grandfather back at the tire factory in Akron so I have been hip to his beer since before they went public. Generational wealth has its advantages. Haven’t spoken to Adam in years but he was always a nice guy, at least for a Republican.

Nice blonde ale. Great choice if you’re not looking for a big hoppy IPA. A fairly low ABV won’t put you under the table after a bottle or three. It’s become pretty popular around here too.

Stunned and saddened.
Sierra Nevada and Russian River mentioned in rumors to buy Anchor apparently, but nothing so far. Could well up just be recipes sold at auction. Really going to miss the Christmas Ale.

But locals such as Greenberg told The Post that a cadre of Democratic Socialists of America drove the push to unionize Anchor’s modest 61-member workforce — in hopes of inspiring the masses to “take on the power of capital.”
“This union was not prioritizing the long-term health of the business,” said Greenberg. “These Democratic Socialists really don’t care about the workers they’re getting involved with. They only want power, and more membership in their screw-loose cult.”
San Fran socialists killed historic Anchor Brewing, critics say
From the New York Post piece about Anchor’s demise. I know…it’s the NY Post. Any truth to this?

The employees blame Sapporo who purchased the brewery in 2017, and had no knowledge of the craft brewing industry, nor did they apparently care. They weren’t organizing because of Anchor Brewing but because of Sapporo
But don’t listen to the employees, who actually DO care about the brand. Instead listen to some supposed “local” and the unidentified “critics” referenced by a well known right wing rag.
Try looking at my original link, and the one that m2 posted. And you’re going with the New York Post story? Ponderous.

No. I asked if there was anything to it.
I also made a point of questioning the Post’s rep.

You’re right, you did, and I should have acknowledged that. But who can really say if there’s anything to it? You just need to go to multiple sources (like the ones already posted) and make up your own mind.

It’s a damn shame regardless of why it’s happened.

Apparently the employees (apparently a bunch of Democratic Socialists who don’t really care about the future of the company) are getting together an effort to purchase the business and run it as a co-op.

They'll probably come out with a new product, something like Anchor Steaming Load of Human Feces Tenderloin IPA.

Unions are always ruining everything!
