Died yesterday from prostate cancer.

Most of you probably never heard of him but he was one of the great saxophonists of the past 50 years. Played with a very distinctive sound that I could pick out just about anywhere. Besides being a leader on his own he was a prolific session musician, playing with folks like

David Bowie (sax solo on Young Americans)

Tommy Bolin
James Brown
George Benson
Paul Butterfield
Kenny Loggins
Carly Simon

Six time Grammy winner.

His 1986 album with Bob James, Double Vision, basically defined the “smooth jazz” genre.

RIP indeed.

I grew up playing sax and he was my biggest influence.

He is without a doubt on my Mt Rushmore of sax players, maybe of any musician.

Pretty much why I have two of my pieces tuned in b flat and a couple in A flat and D.

Most jazz is played in b flat and A flat and D will blend... because its more soothing to the ear.

Sax and drugs and rock & roll.

Dude was on so many albums I had.

Unfortunately, with the current music landscape, the sax, and other actual instruments for that matter, has gone the way of the pterodactyl...

Seeing Dick Parry, who played for Pink Floyd, switch saxes mid-solo is pretty cool. Check out Remember That Night, a concert recording of the David Gilmour Band at the Royal Albert Hall.



Always dug listening to Bobby Keys, too. Did a lot of work with the Stones. His solos on Rip This Joint and Can't You Hear Me Knockin'? are epcot.

Greg Hawkes' sax on All Mixed Up is awesome

IMO his best tune...



At this time Dave Koz is now my favorite sax player.
