Do you actually have any kids? If so, did they go to private schools?

Mine both went to public schools and both were National Merit Scholarship finalists. They also both went to CCD and were confirmed in the Catholic Church. But neither we, nor they, would stand to be indoctrinated by mentally deranged “Christian” fundamentalists in a system that’s supposed to provide an academic education that would prepare them for college and / or life in the real world, with a curriculum that goes against the main premise of our country’s founders, i.e. religion has no place in our government.

If you want to send your kids to a private school that teaches them the God created the Earth 5,000 years ago you’d have to be a mighty shitty parent. That’s your choice, but don’t ask me to pay you for it.

My kids went to public school. I couldn’t afford private school for them. And I would NEVER have sent them to a religion-affiliated private school.

I believe that all state charter laws require charter schools to be “secular” (i.e., have no religious affiliation). People who put their children into schools operated by religious organizations do so on their own dime.

Its been 10 years since my kids were in high school. Maybe things have changed.

My kids are finishing up 10th and 8th grade, and have been homeschooled the whole time. My son is registered at our local HS as an athlete, and my daughter will be next year as well -- that's the extent of our participation. It's a pretty good school, as public schools go, but they would only be educated there as a last resort. So for me, this discussion is not abstract.

But for most of you, I think it is. Public schools are not what they were when you went, or when you sent your grown children, or what they were even 20 years ago. Can kids succeed there? Sure, if they're motivated. But they get OH so much more than the three R's these days. What I find interesting is that Mikey and others are seemingly offended by the very idea of Christianity being taught in schools, but have no problem with the garbage that IS being taught. Ideologies abound! But the ones they teach don't seem to bother some of you, even though so many kids in public schools are coming out depressed, anxious, unable to cope with people who disagree with them, dealing with the trauma of being bullied, and taking medication for any number of mental health conditions -- many of which are caused by what they learn and experience in school. For those of you who champion public school, what is your explanation for this? What is the solution, other than more medication?

I don't have any dog in the fight about what is being taught in public schools, and I don't use any taxpayer money to fund my kids' education (except the sports thing, and even then, we have to pay for the season). I don't care what is being taught in schools.

But if you're so in favor of public education, why don't YOU care about what is being taught in schools? When I think about something called a "mind virus," I think about something that causes you to miss the obvious problems and sing the praises you're instructed to sing. You really think that half the day in a public school is spent on genuine, useful education? It's not. Kids are being bombarded with ideologies CONSTANTLY. It's no different than any religion. I recognize the problems you cite, but I suggest that their solution is not putting religion in public schools.

My guess - and it is only a guess, I am not an expert - is that poverty is a significant contributing factor to the problems you cite. A stronger middle class would help so many, and even would help the ultra-wealthy. If I were king for a day, I'd establish a massive modernization of our nation's infrastructure. In addition to improving water systems, roads, etc, it would create many jobs and with that, middle class wealth. Certainly "trickle down" has not worked. If anything, we should aim for trickle up. I'm not worried about the ultra-wealthy, they'll still be in the 0.02% in any system.
