I can safely say that he was literally an NBA icon.

I was just a casual fan back then, but he & Chamberlain were unstoppable.

Willis Reed & Bill Russell would beg to differ.

It hurt me to say that.

This sucks. He was one of the Lakers I actually liked. If not for the Celtics he would have had a shitload of Championships.

I still feel he was the mind behind the recent Warriors dynasty. Hated it when he wasn't kept on. Warriors only have one NBA Championship since he left.

Those Laker teams were loaded, but the Celtics.

He had perfect form on his jump shots.

RIP the Logo.

Two west coast titans of the game go tits up in the span of two weeks. Who's the west coast Hall of Famer who's gonna be next?

And very little arc on most of 'em, which is unusual for most good outside shooters. Long rebounds are often the result, but he was able to swish 'em.

Zeke from Cabin Creek was among the greatest and a class act.

If you’re only talking hoops I’d say Rick Barry, who is 80 years old. But the next west coast Hall of Famer in any sport will probably be Willie Mays, which would be cause for a state funeral. He’s 93.

State funeral?
If Ella Fitzgerald, Elvis Presley and Muhammad Ali didn't get state funerals, then NO ONE should.

Ali was a Muslim, anti-war follower of Malcom X. I’m shocked that you would hold him in such high regard.

He and Elvis were friends. Elvis had a custom robe made for him..

You can tell quite a lot about anyone, by finding out their thoughts on Elvis Presley.

Now that Mikey correctly called Mays, I'll say Koufax is prolly on deck (no DH in his day). Hope I'm wrong.

Those were some great days in MLB. Even though the Giants were always also-rans. Was it just because we were kids? I can remember digesting the box scores every morning in the Sporting Green (yes the SF Chronicle sports section was green) and could probably name the starting nine on all of the NL teams and most of the AL.

Yes, I remember the sporting green. Best part of breakfast. Didn't they combine the comical and Examiner on Sundays?

As time passed the Examiner became the much better newspaper.

It was still green in the late 80's.
