I was in Korea during the month of April.
I came back to America in early May, and flew in to LAX.

I waited in line at customs.
When it was my turn, I walked up to the counter, where an immigration officer was seated.
I placed my passport, not opened, on the counter.
The officer instructed me to look into the camera mounted on the counter.

The officer never touched my passport.
That means, of course, he never opened it.

I looked into the camera for 2-3 seconds and then the officer said, "Okay, you're good to go, poptart."

He did not say poptart.
He said my first name, which he knew without ever touching my passport.

Ever have to pass through Canadian customs at an airport? [sarcasm]That's a treat[/sarcasm].

This is some invasion of privacy bullshit.

I'm ready to buy a private plane and tell TSA to fuck off permanently.

Facial recognition technology is a real thing.

The ‘invasion’ occurred at customs upon entering the US. Not done by TSA. But go ahead and enjoy your new private plane and your freedumb.

New passport? All US passports have RFID chips in them. They don't need to touch the passport to verify your info.

My current passport was issued in 2015. It expires next year.

I suggest not waiting until the last minute to get your passport renewed. The process can take awhile.

As for the RFID mvscal is talking about, how was the chip in my passport read?
The officer never touched the passport, and there was no scanning device evident on the counter top where I placed my passport.

It seemed to me that my identity was verified by looking into the camera for 2-3 seconds.

Maybe my passport chip was scanned in some way that I am not aware of.

I dunno.

You don't need a handheld scanner. Stationary readers can be built in to the counter or something like that.

In order to be allowed to make the reservation, Airbnb required me to provide a facial photo taken by webcam.
