I'm Hosting a Picnic in Here

Post by Rootbeer »

Potluck as per usualm. Come as you are, bring something to share. Unless you're PL and naked.

Normally I trust my guests to bring whatever suits their fancy but with this group I have a few concerns.
I get the feeling 3 or 4 of you are going to show up with a couple bags of Lays potato chips and expect an equal share of Biggie's enchilada casserole.
That's a huge potluck faux pas. Don't do it.

Not that there aren't exceptions, mind you. I don't expect Screw_Michigan to take two buses, a train, and a $12 Uber while holding a 9x13 pan of cool whip salad on his lap. That guy can bring chips but I expect better from the rest of you.

Special note for roux: We'll be in the shade but refrigeration is not available. That means last night's shrimp etouffee sitting on the table for a couple hours is probably going to kill everyone. Another faux pas that will make the news. Sausage gumbo is the safer play. If you want to bring collard greens, that's fine, but we'll leave them in the sun so the bacon fat doesn't congeal.

bungle clone, you're in charge of games. We have room for Jarts and Spikeball, but not at the same time unless kcdave brings a full case of scotch and risk aversion drops to nil. If that happens, I have a few dozen roman candles left over from the 4th and we can play Wizard Fight across the yard.

I think that's it, friendos. Someone get Cuda on the phone so we can straighten out the egg salad situation.

What are the rest of you bringing?
Ain't nothin' like the real thing, baby.

Is there a good size grill there? If so, then kcdave will handle the fire and I'll handle the pig, we'll do a cochon de lait.

It can get kinda messy at times, so thanks to Sam for already agreeing to bring the rags.

I've never heard of Archibald's so I looked it up. Couple thoughts:

• mvscal and kcdave (edit to add Roux) are going to tell you it's easy to smoke your own meat. Look forward to that.
• It's on MLK Blvd. I'm not sure how to say this but uhh... you're going during the day, right?
• I love this ambiance. You'll never see an Instagram "influencer" posing in front of this place with her selfie stick and fake lips.

Ok fine, y'all cook the pig.

I'll bring the fryer, we'll have some fish with hush puppies and boudin balls. I'll bring some crawfish Monica sauce as well, if you want to top off the fish with that. :rasta:

Not a big fan, tbh. It's very heavy. I really don't care for cream based pasta dishes in general, though.

No pasta, just as a fish topping. If someone is cooking steaks, it will go on that as well. Not everyone likes crawfish Monica, no big deal. Nobody is going hungry at this picnic

Ah. Hmm, interesting. I could see that. Maybe dial the spice down a bit and serve it on blackened fish or a lesser cut of beef like a flank or something.

Being half Slovak, as is much of the 'burgh, I'll bring a tray of pierogies. Potato/cheese filled. Given Roux's posts, I wonder how they would taste with crawfish inside. I'm betting they would be outstanding.

Better let me sample ‘em first, make sure they’re safe for the rest of the gourmands. I don’t mind taking one (or a dozen) for the team.

The ball is in Roux's court. He has easy access to crawfish to make this happen. I expect... no, I demand a PET making this. Sure, I could trap crawfish up here but I certainly don't have the time to do so. I actually have a couple traps for this purpose, but they remain in the basement, brand new.

Make it happen, Roux.

Frozen tails are fine but, to clarify, make absofuckinglutely sure you are buying legit LA crawfish tails. DO NOT, under any circumstances, buy farmed Asian crawfish. You will be fucking sorry if you do. Seriously.

Sam's Club/Walmart regularly carries this brand which I have used many times. Definitely recommend.
