I see nobody in the field that would be an overwhelming favorite. No dominant team. They’ve all got weaknesses. If SMU beats Clemson and we get in, it’s anybody’s playoff.

This morning it hit me that UNLV could throw a wrench in for the Tide by beating Boise State. They’d likely take both and Bama would be gone.

No, that's really not all I needed to say, and I'm not saying that this is 100% accurate, but consider the following scenario.

A small Catholic parish high school (Roux, "parish" has a different meaning around here than in Louisiana), enrollment of maybe 500 to 700 students. Serves the community, has a 100% or nearly 100% college acceptance rate, encourages all their students to compete in sports and has maybe a 75% participation in at least one sport. Their varsity football team is small enough (they probably don't even field a JV team) that a lot of the players end up playing both ways.

There aren't enough, or even any, similar sized schools in the area to form a separate league, so they compete in the "regular" season against mostly public schools (local and not so local) with 1,500 to 3,000 students, many with impressive athletic legacies, and larger Catholic schools that may even recruit for their athletic teams. In fact they could be going up against a school that has produced numerous professional athletes like Bill Walton, Alex Smith, Reggie Bush, Levine Toilolo, etc. They know they're not competitive at this level but they still want to play.

Consider a bunch of similar schools around the state in the same type of situation. Maybe enough (64) to field a six round single elimination tournament at the end of the season. They don't actually care about how many losses they have to schools with four or five times the enrollment, but use those games each year to prepare for the playoff. They're not shitty teams, but just overmatched against larger schools. So they go 1-9 in the regular season and 6-0 in the playoff, and they end up 7-9 with a "state championship." And they certainly don't give a fuck about what some clown in Bumfuck Texas thinks. But I guess they don't actually deserve to be in that tournament. Maybe that's what they mean by "competitive equity?"

UNLV is a good well coached team. I could see Vegas winning this game if they can keep the best running back in the country under 150 yards rushing in a few hours today.

They won't take both teams if this happens. The loser of the game will play Cal in a bowl game.

It was the chomo 'welcoming parties' in NYC and DC kissing the children as they got off the buses.

The way it works for playoffs in So Cal is different. They've experimented with a few things over the years. What they've gone to the last 2 years is an end of the year ranking. Nobody knows what division they're in during the season. You find out after when playoff pairings are announced. They use the Cal Preps rankings so once they figure out how many teams they want in Div 1 then they basically take the next 16 teams according to their rankings and put them in D-2 and so on and so forth. A team can have a terrible record but SOS be really good. It's not a prefect system as we see by having two teams with a combined record of 0-150. We also have 14 divisions for playoffs. There is talk about requiring at least a .500 record but when those teams run out and you've still got divisions to fill you take what's there. It's also about the money as we all know.

A minimum number of wins would be a great start.

Lefty...a lot of people out here agree with you, however with you've exhausted your number of teams for 14 divisions you have to find teams to fill out brackets.

Ideally, they would realign the local leagues so that you don't have small parochial schools with 500 students competing in the same league as huge public schools with 2,000 to 3,000 students. Yes, San Diego St Augustine was 0-10 in the regular season but beat teams in the playoff that were 5-6, 8-4, 10-1, and 7-6. They were competing against teams that have produced Marcus Allen, Rashaan Salaam, and Reggie Bush among others.

Mikey, we had a school Rio Hondo Prep with 71 boys in it beat Warren, a school with 3000+ kids for a CIF championship a couple of weeks ago. Bottom line is there is no perfect system. I give our section credit for constantly trying to make it better each year.
We also have several areas with a lot of schools that re league every two years or so where the top two teams move up a league and the bottom two move down to make it more equitable.
