MLB SB leader in 2024, Elly De La Cruz, had 67. It would take 21 seasons with 67 to reach 1406.

Are SB totals down due to pitchers getting better at holding people on?
About the only explanation that makes any sense.
I would think that pitch timers might affect things.

Within the next few seasons, MLB will do away with steals as an official stat due to the term’s negative connotation and the likelihood that it’ll encourage kids to engage in other kinds of theft. Bases will no longer be stolen, just borrowed.

Interesting.
Another interesting comparison...
Rickey had 81 leadoff homeruns (team's first AB of a game).
As far as we know, the Babe didn't have any.
