It does make one wonder. Some doctors think that checking your PSA after the age of 70 or so can be counterproductive due to the slow progression of PCa. You'll probably die of something else even if you have it. Elevated PSA can indicate other conditions besides cancer, and it's been felt for a while that, after a certain age, doing the PSA check before a positive DRE (i.e. the lump in the asshole) can lead to unnecessary treatment. Maybe they weren't checking anything else until the lump showed up.

Contrary to what a lot of people think, PCa almost never has any symptoms until it's already metastasized, and then it's pretty much too late to try and remove or cure it. You can only attempt to manage it. Men who have a hard time peeing usually have something else, like BPH (enlarged prostate) or maybe prostatitis. Not cancer. PSA can also rise because of either of these conditions. Get your PSA checked regularly. Even it it's somewhat high, it's not necessarily a big deal. If it starts to rise, then you need to go for the MRI and biopsy.
