The Sixth Fleet launches planes from the USS Saratoga. & USS America
Planes were ordered to the rescue of the Liberty on two occasions. In the second attempt the USS America also launched aircraft. Both time the Secretary of Defense MacNamara ordered the planes back. There was a challenge from the fleet when ordered back the second time. President Johnson came on the line and confirmed the order saying,
"We will not embarrass an ally."

The article was too lenghty. Had to bail after a couple of minutes due to cramps from scrolling. I think I probably made it half way through according to my scroll bar. Some good pictures though.

I'd ask marty to summarize, but I think his slant would only make his intent even more hazy.
From a brief scan of the almost endless nearly 40 year old story it seems like another just shot at the Jews.
It's not like the 60's were fucked up or anything, or that the global situation has changed at all since then.
right? </sarcasm>

I guess "Rack The Troops!" roughly translates to "What Have You Done For Me Lately?".
Not surprising given the historically shitty treatment you've always given your veterans.
Always have, always will.

No actually, I think he's correct. Vets from the Revolution through WWI were typically not given much. The G.I. Bill after WWII was a change to that.
I think there was a near riot in D.C. after WWI. Troops had to be called out to control the situation. The "offending" party was .... WWI Vets who felt they'd been given the shaft.

The fact that you even know that story is astonishing.
Well done, Howard Zinn in VA.

They weren't shafted.
WW1 vets were issued $1,000 dollar bonds shortly after the war redeemable in 1945. When the Depression came along, they demanded immediate payment.
When said payment was not immediately forthcoming, they began to riot and MacArthur was ordered to clear them out.
Thanks for the clarification, I remembered something but not the details.
In 1930, MacArthur returned to the United States and was named by President Herbert Hoover as chief of staff of the Army. At age 50, he was promoted to the rank of full general at a time when America was staunchly isolationist and military figures like MacArthur played a small part in the nation’s activities. In 1932, MacArthur led a force of tanks, cavalry and infantry against a group of 15,000 unarmed World War I veterans who had camped in Washington to petition Congress for early payment of their service bonuses. In a violent clash precipitated by orders from MacArthur, the “Bonus Army” was dispersed. For many at that time, and for historians since, the harsh treatment of the “Bonus Army” has seemed to offer insight into the mind and character of Douglas MacArthur. MacArthur later justified his actions by improbably claiming that he had thwarted a “Communist revolution.”

Our government doesn't do as much for Veterans as they could or should, in my opinion.
As far as the Liberty goes, it's unfortunate but not surprising. Johnson and McNamara had no balls.

They seemed to have the balls to incinerate thousands of Vietnamese civilians.

You forgot to call them "pussies".
That, and saying how you would have personally put a bullet in each of their skulls.
You're slipping dude.

You're right. It was probably a bitch to find a whore after a napalm raid. They've gotta put more thought into where they bomb.

I'm guessing that martys country will be on the phone asking for support from our underappreciated military within seconds after canada is attacked.
Like anyone would bother. Snow, Ice, and a lot of signs written in French. Oooh. Slice me off some of that.
I think you're just jealous in that all you've got to defend your forests are a bunch of dudes dressed in bright red clothes and funny hats who call themselves "Mounties".
Must have taken a lot of lonely nights with hoofed animals for them to come up with that one, eh?
America certainly has some problems, but the one problem we do not have and never will is that we are not nor never will be Canada.
And hell, that makes the rest of the bullshit rather bearable.
Nice try though, dudley, but sell crazy somewhere else.

I'll leave colour-coded threat levels and national security hyper-paranoia to you guys.
It's like some wierd zombie movie, were the last few remaining humans are holed up in the farmhouse, pointing guns, and hurling accusations at each other.

You have to. In order for your country to have either of those two things, someone would have to attack it. Why would they bother? To stampede the moose?

Yeah, poor old Canada. Shucks, nobody wants to terrorize us.
What a pity.
