i leave my computer on, come home and the power was cut from storm, i start to use it, and every driver is gone

i have virtually barebones windows

i cant reinstall my sound card, add hardware option wont work



no video card,nothing,



do i need to reformat/

If you go back and restore from a day previous, it should......nevermind.

Are you running XP?

Sounds like you're starting in Safe Mode.

While you're in Safe Mode, do a defrag (which also gets the pagefile in Safe Mode) and run chkdsk. Reboot.

IF the storm didn't fry something, you could go back to an XP restore point. If it is an earlier version, you might have to re install it.

What kind of box is it? some of the reformat disks erase everything. You still might be able to retrieve files.

because your system shut down without saving it's system settings you've got corrupt system files.
gonna need to reinstall if you can't fix it from F8>Safe Mode or Last Known etc..

no. You will just end up with a mess on your hands.

As someone asked, are you in Safe mode? Safe mode is easy to differentiate from your normal windows because of the 'safe mode' that is in all 4 corners of your windows desktop. If this is the case, fixing it could be as simple as a reboot, or as hard as uninstalling all your windows drivers, and then re-installing them in normal mode.

Also what do you mean by 'can't reinstall'? Do you mean that when you install the driver for something and reboot, the driver is still not there or that you get an error when you try to install a driver? Are you logged in as an administrator? In XP, you may need to hit CTRL+ALT+Del at the login screen twice to get the text login screen where you can type in 'Administrator' and the password and log in as The Administrator, however, your Main XP user is generally an Administrative user and therefore has enough previlages to install drivers.

You may want to uninstall the current hardware drivers and then reboot and allow windows to detect your hardware and then supply the appropriate drivers.

If none of these work, you can try the restore option. You can also have windows check all of its DLLs and look for any corrupt ones.

If you re-install, just install over your current windows. It will keep your settings and re-install your dll's and windows system files.

If that still doesn't work, just backup your documents, format and install from scratch.

Good luck.

A "Repair" install will bring your system back to life without losing files or settings.

tried to fix windows, said i was trying to install a ealrier version, and wouldnt work!

The only way to get out of safe mode is to reboot. It should ask you if you want to boot into normal or safe mode. You can also force the question by hitting F8 when windows starts its boot process. If you are having Dll Problems, windows might force the safe mode regardless of what you want.

Try openning command prompt (Start -> Run -> type 'CMD /x' and hit enter) and type 'sfc /shecknow' You might need a windows XP CD to actually fix the corrupt DLLs. This only works on Windows XP.

ok, got windows reinstalled, and seems everything is working, ......except



i still have no sound, it says sound card is working , but no volume control, i try to pull up the volume control and get this":


There are no active Mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to control panel, click p[rinters and other devices. then click add hardware

there is no other devices in printer options!??????????????

first thing I'd do is uninstall the card and drivers and then reinstall with a different driver if at all possible.
try going to the Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices.
in the five tab window that opens: Hardware>select your SB card>Properties
now in the three tad window that opens select Properties again.
should list Audio Devices,Midi Devices,Mixer Devices.
see if you even have a Mixer device listed there.
you may and it may just need to be enabled.

I know I've fixed this before a couple different ways.
one was to install some CD burning software which usually installs the needed audio codecs which enabled a Mixer.
seems like I also installed a video codec (Divx maybe,I can't remember) which also had the necessary audio codecs to use in conjunction with the video codecs etc...
