Verrrry superstitious.......

Playing a couple of weeks ago, one of the guys I was playing with mentioned to me that he noticed I always repair ball marks with a blue tee and asked about it. I told him it's just one of a number of superstitions I have when it comes to playing golf.

My idiosyncracies/superstitions:
I only use white or natural colored tees when teeing off--unless it's on a par 3, I always use a broken white tee.....if I can't find a broken one, I'll break one of my own. If I am forced to break a tee, it goes back in my pocket and I use it on every par 3 from that point on......

I carry 14 tees, one of which is blue and is used only to repair ball marks.......

I mark my ball with a 1939-S Mercury head dime given to me by my grandfather.

I never hit a brand new ball off the first tee, and will not use a ball marked with the number 4......

I always wrap the tip of my right middle finger with adhesive tape, although I really don't need it any more (swing has changed).....

I'm sure there are other quirks, but I just can't recall them right now.....

Anybody else have weird superstitions and/or rituals ?????

Good God man. What's next? Virgin sacrifice on the 7th green? Druid fertility rites at the pro shop?

I always hit 2 off the first tee, neither ever being any good.

If I have a 5 foot putt or less to win a hole in whatever money game I'm playing, I make sure I miss it.

When chipping, I always make sure to stand almost straight up just about when I am about to hit the ball resulting in a coon.

Oh yeah, although I always grew up putting right handed, I decided the putting couldn't get any worse so now I putt left handed.

Seriously...

I've used the same ball marking/divot tool that I found at the Houston Open since I was 11...or 18 years now.

I have a golf ball in my bag that says "Oh Shit!" on it that I never use. Had it for about 10 years now.

Always put my glove in my right rear pocket when putting.

I make sure I guzzle a 12 oz. beer right before I tee off, no matter what time I am playing (for nerves).

Thats about it for me. I do putt left handed now though for the reason mentined above.

Hey, that virgin sacrifice thingy sounds interesting, but Druids are just a little to radical for my taste----I think a Scientology rally at the 19th hole sounds more promising......

1. Never putt with glove on. In back right pocket.

2. Broken tees on par threes.

3. Grip twice, shrug shoulders once, then swing.

I put all my change in my right pocket.

I tie my left shoelace in a double knot.

I wear my hat backwards and put a blue tee behind my right ear.

1. 3 1/4 beers before teeing off
2. On the first tee I use a ball marked "Rox's Box" (been using it for over 10 years now)
3. A captain morgan's and coke at the turn
4. Beers a plenty throughout the round

And I wonder why my golf game sucks dick

I've only had one thing that was clearly a superstition in my game. Back when I wore a glove, it was always black. I can't remember the round but I believe it was because the first time I wore a black glove I had a round in the zone. But then when I became obsessed with practice, I couldn't afford all the gloves I was going through so I learned to play without one.

I do have quirks that aren't necessarily superstitions.

I too always use white or naturaly colored tees. Not because I think that has an effect on my game. But because when I was a caddy, I regularly caddied for a guy who used colored tees and would get pissed when I didn't get all the tee-paint off his ball when he tossed it to me on the green. That became ingrained in my mind that you can't put with a ball that has tee-paint on it. So that's either anal-retentiveness, or the memory of that jackass haunts me when I play, or I need some sort of therapy. Along with that, that last thing I do before I head to the first tee is I go get my towel dripping wet. Simple physics will tell you that your shit has to be clean. Grooves have to be clean to create proper spin. Ball has to be clean to promote proper flight and action.

My preshot routine has a little quirk too. I stand behind the ball, draw the imaginary target line thought the ball to the fairway or green, then take a practice swing. That's pretty common. But then as I walk up to adrress, I firmly tap the club on the ground with my left hand. I do this just hard enough to send a little shock up my left arm. A long time ago I found this helped me get rid of any tension I had in my left arm and shoulder. I don't know if I still need to do that, but it's part of the routine and I'll probably do it forever.

Titleist golf balls.

sometimes Callaway (these days, if they are on sale and/or my cousin has a ton of them and gives me a couple sleeves every once in a while).

if i play poorly, re-read the chapters in Hogan's five essentials on grip/stance/alignment.

I have this strange superstion where I always smoke dope on the first tee that's out of sight of the clubhouse/parking lot.

I also have a superstition that says that if I keep my first shot in bounds, I KNOW I'm going to do better.

Word on Hogan's 5 Fundementals. Its the best written golf instruction I have ever seen.

As for balls, I have a buddy who scavenges old balls. He sells me 100 Top Flites at a time for 30 bucks. Most of the balls have only been hit once. When I start breaking 80 maybe I'll worry about upgrading my balls.
