Played a course in Houston called Greatwood from the black tees. Can't remember the exact length but it was LONG with trouble all over the place. Not even fair. Shot an 84 there when I was 17 playhing in the HGA Junior Tour. I was at the top of my game at that time with a 2 handicap and was eccstatic to shoot the 84.

i had a similar experience at Pete Dye's Oak Tree GC in Edmond, OK--site of the 1988 PGA. i was playing about a 4-5 handicap at my home course (which was a good golf course). you had to be 16 to play at Oak Tree; so, when i turned 16, my dad took me out there and i shot 93. i wasn't ecstatic but i didn't play that bad. i hit some good shots and made some hustling my ass off grinder putts for bogeys and such.

i've played it about 10-12 times since and it's tough. sadistic, even.

Ah yes, Oak Tree. The pro’s son at my home course in Lake Jackson, TX where I grew up was Willie Wood. Willie was in a battle with Paul Azinger, I believe, for the 1988 PGA Championship title. Willie ended up 2nd and Azinger won it. It was his best finish ever in a pro tournament, I believe. I watched that tournament on the VCR in the pro shop many a time when I worked there for 2 years in high school. That looked like a BEAR of a course.

it's plenty hard, i tell ya. and i've been lucky enough to play some good courses--carnoustie (also very very hard), southern hills, turnberry (totally the coolest), troon, the old course and some others. plus, it's usually windy and back then the whole course was exposed sitting on these rolling hills--now there's houses.

I know willie wood. when i was a junior golfer and just starting to play summer tournaments me and my crew all sort of worshipped the OSU and OU golf team players. at the time, wood had turned pro (he was a great college player)....but there was verplank and some other osu guys, todd hamilton, andrew magee, and couple new zealanders who played for OU who are asian tour staples. back then, verplank was a force of nature. he won the western open as an amateur.

but, we saw all those guys around and they'd play with us as part junior play day type things. and my old man used to (and still does) know them from hanging around the Oak Tree clubhouse and playing out there--the OSU team used to play/practice there all the time.

on the subject, i was at the US Open couple weeks back and Pinehurst #2 is no bargain. it's "all that".

I was an assistant pro at Northgreen Country Club in Rocky Mount, NC. From the back tees it measured out at about 7,250. And from the back, only one of the par 5s was reachable in 2 and all of the par 3s were over 200 yards.

I have played Purgatory once. But I was with a bunch of wusses who didn't want to play it from back there so we played the blue tees. So I can't really list that one... ...yet.
