Supposedly the Wings have bought out McCarty, Hatcher, and Whitney.
No surprises there, though McCarty is one of those guys you just identify with Red Wing. It'll be weird to see him wearing someone else's jersey.

McCarty would look good with a crown on his jersey. :) They need a leader like that with Lappy gone.

John Muckler says the Senators aren't buying anyone out. I would have thought they'd be all over washing their hands of DeVries, considering they'll have to commit a lot of salary to their more skilled positions.
Guess not. Good luck with that one...

I'll miss Mac...definitely a huge part of this team and the community. He'd be a Red Wing this year if it wasn't for his salary. No one will forget about what he meant to the rivalry with the Avs and how he came to his teammates' aide. He's got the heart of a lion but in the new NHL he's not a million-dollar player. His scoring ability has gone down and he's unable to stay healthy for an entire season...his game doesn't justify his price tag. I won't argue with the moves of buying out Whitney and Hatcher. They seemed like good additions at the time but both didn't live up to their billing and their paychecks. Granted, Hatcher couldn't stay healthy but when he did play, he looked very slow out there.
The rumors have been flying around Detroit about what's going to happen next. One rumor is the Wings looking at bringing back Lapointe to replace McCarty...who's probably a better player at this point and hopefully he's asking for less money. Another report was that they wanted to buy out Lang but Holland has stated that he's part of the Wings plans for next year. I don't think they'd do that unless someone became available for a better price...the name of Fedorov has been thrown around in case he's bought out by the Ducks. I think Lang will still be a Red Wing. Another rumor is the idea of bringing back Osgood to be Legace's backup...he's not exactly the same guy the Wings let go after they picked up Hasek a few years ago. He's probably a backup at best at this point in his career. It would be a trip if the Wings ended up bringing back Lapointe, Fedorov and Osgood back to Detroit...I'm not betting on that though.
For some reason, I don't sense that the media is buying the idea that Legace is going to be the #1 goalie in Detroit. Joseph's pricey club option is going to be to picked up and Legace's price tag is very reasonable. I personally think they should give the job to Manny and let him finally take the wheel after being cast aside while Osgood, Hasek and Joseph were here. In the salary cap age, if you can get a goalie of Legace's quality for his price, you'd be a fool to buy him out. Short of getting Khabibulin, there isn't another goalie out there that I'd want in goal for the Wings next year.

I laughed when I heard that. They aren't going to buy out Smolinski and deVries? Yeah, right. Wait until he sees what Hossa and Havlat are going to ask for. Buying out Smolinski and inserting Spezza just seems like a no-brainer. deVries out and Volchenkov in, is also a no-brainer.

True dat. Lapointe back instead of McCarty would be alright. It keeps the Grind Line together to some extent, as Marty got time with Malts & Drapes a ways back.
I'm glad to hear Lang is staying. He will help the Wings for a long time. Not so sure I would want Sergei back, but if the price is right and he has a better attitude (and if he can stay away from Russian tennis skanks) then why not.

All he ever was. The Wings won the Cup in spite of him.

It would be a trip, but not the same w/o Stevie. Any word on that? I also heard he was talking to Holland about the possibility of bringing in Eric Lindros. Have you heard anything about that?

Yzerman's back for at least one more year.
And supposedly Lindros is looking at Toronto, Boston, and Calgary (!) as possible destinations for himself. Just rumours I've heard.
August 1 can't come soon enough for me. It's going to be very interesting to watch.

Hmmm......I seem to recall a Stars fan or thousand saying this a lot. Hell, he was slow 10 years ago. He didn't even make the '02 Olympic team. But he is big and is still good for retaliations. Stars are interested but Lurch wants a multi-year deal, as does Modano. They'd probably be wise to avoid both and go younger.

Would actually just let Modano go just like that? The guy had an off year but he's still Mike Modano, one of the best all-around players in the sport. Do the Stars have a center of the future to take his place or would Arnott become their #1 center? I'm assuming they aren't going to keep Turgeon.

modano is a pussy, all he does is bitch piss and moan to the refs and then dive whenever he feels a stick on his hip. There is no place in the NHL for diving homosexuals like Mike Modano

Great news...hopefully he signs for only $1 or 2 million or at least something more cap friendly than what he's been making.
I heard on the radio today that Holland is done buying out players for the Wings. The Wings would stand at roughly $23.2 million after the three buyouts with 12 guys under contract...which include Shanahan and his $2.28 million player option and three minor leaguers (Mowers, Rivers, Helmer). You still have Yzerman to deal with and Zetterberg and Datsyuk will command a decent contract. Plus, you have to fill Hatcher's spot on the roster...possibly by re-signing Schneider. Also, Chelios is unsigned but I hope he's finally done as a Red Wing.
After they sign their key free agents, I don't know how much more they will have to sign a free agent from another club. They might have enough for 6th defenseman or a 4th liner. I'd like to see them go after a RW like Murray, Palffy or Kovalev but they will probably be able to get more money with another team...can't believe I'm actually saying that about the Wings.

RACK!!
It's one thing to put up with a crying pussy like Modano when he getting close to 100 points a season, but that dog don't hunt no more.

With the new rule changes...this might be Modano's type of game. The breakaway kid. The Oiler Killer!

With Modano's 35 year old wheels? Not likely.

Rack X-Traffic...... At his prime, NOBODY was faster with the puck. Dude was a scoring chance every time he touched the puck. Now? At 35? I don't know if he has those same incredible wheels. '03-04 was a tough year for him off the ice (screwed by agent and then lost $6-8M salary for 04-05) and he put up lousy numbers on. So he's got a lot of motivation to have a big season......but he's another year older. Who knows? But go ahead, call him a pussy or whatever. No, he doesn't fight or throw out big hits, but he was/is an incredible player for what he does. I've seen that guy live more than anyone here and can't remember and "dives". I do remember him getting hacked to death with no penalties called or Roenick taking runs at him. I also remember him playing with a broken wrist in the '99 Finals.
Turgeon just got bought out. This means Guerin stays. I'd be surprised if they let Mo go.

Modano was the reason it took the Kings 5 fucking years to beat the Stars during the late 90s.

I believe the buyout deadline has passed...here's the final list of waiver/buyout casualties:
Scott Lachance
Andrew Cassels
Matt Johnson
Bobby Holik
Brian Savage
Chris Gratton
Mathieu Biron
Pierre Turgeon
Derian Hatcher
Darren McCarty
Ray Whitney
John LeClair
Tony Amonte
Did I forget anyone?
A few notable names let go but none of these guys are in their prime anymore. Holik might be a decent pickup for a defensive center. I'm going to assume his demands won't be as high since he got a huge buy out from the Rangers. None of these players would be first line talent on most teams. I was expecting to see atleast one BIG name bought out but I suppose teams might just be looking trade them instead to get something in return.

You know, for as much as the owners have been whining about losing money because they were paying the players so much ... I'm shocked  that they didn't take advantage of the chance to get out of more contracts for only 2/3 of the price.

McKenzie was talking about the Kings signing Holik, should be on the cheap with all the money he made from the Rangers buyout.

As long as his demands are, who wouldn't want a big, physical center that is great on faceoffs and kills penalties. I would've liked to see the Wings go after him but with Datsyuk, Lang and Draper on the depth chart already...there's no room for him. He'd be a solid addition for the Kings and I think a team like the Thrashers or Blue Jackets could use a guy like him.

another Rag? Carter was a great pick up for the Queens, I could see Dumb Ass Taylor making that mistake again, afterall this is the same dumb fucken GM who got rid of Schneider to keep keep Aaron Miller
