It's the symbol for "only one good song on this album".

That symbol is just 4 Metallica "M script" logos connected together. It also could be the international sign for "This is when we start to really suck."

Yup. Lots of people say In Justice but I think it was the black album. I remember the first time I heard Enter Sandman wondering "what the hell is that?"

Black was when they strapped on the waterskis and eyeballed that shark.
Justice was overproduced, but still had a little of the edginess that made the previous efforts so great.
