Depeche Mode Reveal New Album Tracklist, Cover Art

Timothy Najmolhoda and Amy Phillips report:

No more blasphemous rumours: Depeche Mode's ever-so-slow release of information regarding their new LP continues! Two months ago, the synth-pop legends made it known that their upcoming record, now titled Playing the Angel, would probably feature 12 tracks. Now, they've announced the album's tracklist on their website, upgrading the certainty of their previous statement from "probably" to "definitely." Also on the site is the album's cover art, which, like the cover of the last Cure album, appears to have been created in a kindergarten art class. (Embracing your inner child as you approach middle age, eh?).

The band's first album since 2001's Exciter will hit American shelves on October 18, with "Precious", the lead single, landing in stores two weeks prior, on October 4.

The tracklist:

01 A Pain That I'm Used To
02 John the Revelator
03 Suffer Well
04 The Sinner in Me
05 Precious
06 Macrovision
07 I Want it All
08 Nothing's Impossible
09 Instrospectre
10 Damaged People
11 Lillian
12 The Darkest Star

"I Want It All", "Suffer Well", and "Nothing's Impossible" were all written by singer Dave Gahan, marking the first time Gahan's songwriting has appeared on a Depeche Mode album. (He released a solo disc, Paper Monsters, in 2003.) Guitarist/principal songsmith Martin Gore says that Playing the Angel's lyrical themes are "Anything that appeals to really dysfunctional people." So, business as usual for DM.

In other Depeche news, electroclash survivor Tiga's new remix of "Shake The Disease" will appear on Future Retro, a compilation of '80s remixes due out on September 27 on Warner Music. And the classic video for "Enjoy the Silence", featuring commentary by Gahan, will be included on the music video collection The Work of Director Anton Corbijn, to be released on DVD September 13 by Directors Label.

The band is still promising a U.S. tour during the months of October, November, and December in support of Precious Angel, but dates and venues remain unknown. Anxious fans can head over to the band's web page to see where (but not when) the band will be visiting. Either that, or just keep checking the Pitchfork News Wire, as we'll report the dates as soon as we learn of them. Or you can make plans for spring break in sunny Vilnius, Lithuania, or any number of cities your great-great-grandparents fled in the nineteenth century, as the band has already mapped out an early 2006 trek across Europe.

I've heard "Precious" and I enjoyed it. It sounded like it would fit on Violator. Hopefully the rest of the songs are as good.

You should wear eyeliner like the singer of the Killers or like Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean. Love it.

Please, Patsy. Look at what you're doing to Prime's av. Poor guy has to live life knowing that his facial hair is a cause of constant torment, now you're tearing down the image he has built up.

I remember one day when Prime said, actually he sang, to me "Try Walking In My Shoes." I think I understood him a bit more that day. Though my image of him may be wrong or it may even be perverted, you should hear me out and hopefully you'll be converted to my way of thinking.

Your harsh words to him are very unnecessary. They can only do harm.
