The At Large rant thread (NU game full of irony/coincidence)

Post by At Large »

Hey, which one of you f-heads moved my thread!?

Just kidding. Fine, I'll post a thread on this.

This game is full of irony/coincidences.

Consider the following:

- NU AD Steve Pederson was over at Pitt as the AD there.
- He and Bill Byrne schedule this game
- Now he's the AD here
- SP fired Solich and wanted to hire Dave Wanstandt (sp?) as the NU coach.
- SP has to scramble when the Dolphins keep DW another year to hire BC.
- Solich gets hired by Ohio, who play Pitt the week before NU
- Ohio actually beats Pitt, making that hire look genius and SP's choice extremely suspect
- NU plays Pitt this weekend

NU better win this game because I'm going to go crazy if they don't. It's already a losing effort to try an listen to the local sports talk here. I turn on the radio and get so pissed that I almost call them up to chew them out. This local crew on the 1480 station just won't let it go. Everytime you turn it on, it's "Well, Osborne used to do this" and "NU used to do that". And they have such a disdain for how BC does things that there's just a venom in their voices. I'm not a huge BC fan at all, but I would like to hear some positive things every now and then. Stop living in the past! It's over! It's never going to be that way again. (me venting to some NU fans) so move on!

They need to play a loop of Bab's "The Way We Were" all day long because it's nostalgia NU radio, all day long. It drives me insane! It would be one thing if we talk like what a great game that was or something that, but it's stupid shit like ranting about the lack of playing time for certain players during the Wake Forest game and how walk ons deserve to play because they know what NU football is all about and blah blah blah! AAAAGGGHHH!

And it's not just the hosts. We had a caller the other day to one of the shows who was a little concerned that 5-star juco recruit Zach Bowman wasn't starting the first game. His question: "Is he going to transfer?"

Are you freaking kidding me? And that's not the only time I've heard that this season. It's been asked about several players: Marlon Lucky, Cody Glenn, Harrison Beck, etc.

People are freaking out because of a single shot of the TV cameras on the sidelines of the WF game because much heralded QB, Beck, doesn't look happy. One brief glimpse and people are freaking. What in the hell, do you want him to smile all game long? Then people will be concerned that he isn't taking the game seriously. People chill. He'll learn the offense and play sometime. I'm sure they're not going to not play him if Zach Taylor keeps up his 44 percent completion rate.

There, I feel better now.

No one cares about this game, but it'll be interesting as hell if Pitt wins. Trust me. We'll be inandated with letters to the editor like "Looks like we fired the wrong coach" and "How their hearts are with Ohio now."

Which reminds me, if I read one more time from some fan that says they aren't going to support NU anymore and are going to be Ohio football fans, I'm going to track them down and scream at them. It's one thing to hate the coach that you have now, but it's still your duty as a "true" fan to support your team no matter what. There are still players on this team that need our support, even if you think that BC is a clueless optimist that tries to sell us a shit sandwich and convince us that it's just ground steak on a bun.

Don't talk to me when BC gets fired, but then NU hires a coach with Nebraska (state or school ties) like Joe Glenn (former Lincolnite) and comes back because the talent cupboard is full. Wear your shit green Bobcat fan. No room left on this train for you. Deserters aren't welcome.

Back to NU...

Of course the team is going to struggle when you try to shove 17 new players in the first two games. Look at OU when Stoops arrived. He had some talent there and some he brought in and he didn't shine that first year. Even Kirk Ferentz (sp?) struggled mightily his first several years trying to rebuild Iowa. You can't expect freshmen and jucos that haven't played together to gel like the fab 5 Michigan team. It just doesn't happen. People are expecting Marlon Lucky to run wild like AD at OU, but AD had the luxery of having a great QB running the show along with a decent line. No such luck for NU this year. It's going to take time NU fans.

Finally to my take on the game.

NU should win this one handily unless Palko gets hot, which could happen since he's a steaky QB. NU's defense should have no trouble containing Pitt. They've finally got some talent and depth at the D line. They'll try to make Palko run for his life to create turnovers. That's where I see this going.

NU 35, Pitt 17

Did you know Wannstedt recommended Pederson talk with Houston Nutt after he was retained?

You have the media and the internet to thank for all the anomosity.
Like you said.. it's over, but with Frankies win, it just stirred the pot once again.

You listen to 1620 The Zone 3-6? It may help.

If this is 1480, I suggest you give it up for sure.

Yeah, I've heard that crap as well...these shitstains are pretty much your 1994 through 1997 jump on fans...no cred, any of 'em.

NU 35, Pitt 17
If NU scores 35, are you saying the defense will account for at least 14?
Cuz unless Wagner gets their attention and the O-line comes together, moving the ball for 35 doesn't seem possible.

Yes, I'm counting on either the defense running back two scores, a punt return or the offense getting short yardage situations off of turnovers.

On second thought, it will be

30-17 (3 field goals, 2 defensive touchdowns and one offensive touchdown)

Palko gets hot...he's a steaky QB.
Ground Chuck, or Center Cut?

Palko is a talented, gutsy kid. He can definitely take control of a game, under some circumstances...and Pitt is not in those circumstances now. Pitt is utterly depleted. This should be a fairly comprehensive beating...it really should be.

Cornhusker, the station in question is 1480, namely the Average Joe Sports Show. The hosts insist they're not being negative, just honest. No, honest would be that you acknowledge their shortcomings with equal amounts of unbiased praise for certain players. They love to point out that many of the main players this year on the defense weren't recruited by BC's coaches. They fail to acknowledge that one who was starting at LB is out for the season after a first-game injury and that the reason they're have some immediate success so far on D is BECAUSE the BC recruited D players are providing ample depth for rotation at every position. One is backup, but is leading the linemen in tackles. It's that shit that drives me crazy.

Thank God I'm moving in two weeks to Omaha so I won't have to hear this anymore. I'll miss Lincoln, but I won't be missing those guys.

Ohhhhh Hombre, You are in for a world of dissapointment...

Two sports stations up here 1620 the zone which is ESPN radio(cowherd,Patrick etc.) , And "Bigsports590". Bigsplurts590 is the worst of the lot.. heres a sampling of the schedule

5:30-10am The Todd and Tyler Show-Don't know if you've heard of these guys but tard and twatler are completely un sports related unless of course it's to tell everyone how much they hate the Huskers, huskerfans etc. More or less they're a low quality Howard stern ripoff with mid 70's Jerry Brown shoulda been president type political views.

10:00-12:00 The Travis Justice Show- Channel 3 broadcaster, iowa homer, and fat, gaytee wearing blowhard spouts his dumbass opinions for 2 hours and milks dissention among the ranks of Huskernation.

12:00-3:00 The Jim Rome Show-TAPE DELAYED_ Yeah it's tape delayed, but it's still Rome...

3:00-6 The Matt Perrault show- Surfer sounding dude from Bama talks sports, When he's good he's good when he sucks ass...well you get my point.

You know, I was really dissapointed when they fired Solich..especially after it seemed like they were staring to get back on track by going 9-3. Yeah sure they got poleaxed by Texas and KSU..But those teams were..better..It happens. It didn't help matters that Pedersen did it in such a dishonest way..BUT whats done is done..You gotta take your lumps and live with what you got...

That is not what I heard on douchesports590 last week as wave after wave of the fickle called in hoping Nebraska would lose to Pitt. Which I suppose works out better for for me in the form of a possible ticket upgrade as the yuppies and bluehairs jump off the bandwagon, but still these folks need to realize that Franks not coming back and Bill Belichick doesn't want to move to Lincoln. For better or worse Callahan's the Coach. Stevie P though might not be so lucky..

Shut up and enjoy it. Nebraska went 41 fucking years without a losing season. You think that after one 5-6 season, we should all feel sorry for them and root for Callahan to right the ship? Screw that. I doubt you'd be crying in your beer if Michigan fell on hard times. A lot of people (myself included) have waited their entire lives to see the Husker Empire crumble into ruin. I'm not about to feel sorry for them yet.

I suppose every good team has to go through a bad stretch every once in a while and NU was long overdue, but I guess I'm disappointed in how it's turned out. It's like of like you have a shitty Christmas and then the next Christmas picks up, but then your parents get a divorce only to have your old man say, "Hey, I know it was better, but it wasn't perfect. I'll get you a new Mom and we'll be back to having the best Christmases ever." You're thinking, "Oh man! Finally, we got rid of that bitch that always got us the socks option when it was 3rd down and short." You're excited at the prospects, but then weeks go by with no new Mom. Each Mom that is on the date shows a lot of interest, but then right before putting out, they go back to their old man for more loving. Finally, in desperation, YOUR old man chooses a wife that has just been given the boot herself. She comes in and talks a good game. She promises a whole new type of Christmas with all sorts of new presents. You're pretty excited. Finally, you got the new Mom. Things don't start well...

The new Mom kicks your older brothers out of the house and brings in her own sons. At first, you don't know what to think. She threw out the one bright thing about the family. And they're dicks! They yell at you and instead of taking the blame that they might be assholes, they tell you that you are the asshole. Christmas is fine. It's your fault for not making it great. You didn't try hard enough. They gave you the Christmas list. Why aren't you following through on your end?

Christmas comes and Mom promises a great Christmas with bells and whistles, but all you get is EtchaSketch. You were promised a Sony PSP, but a fucking EtchaSketch is all you see and she insists that she gave you a Sony PSP, but all you see is the lousy EtchaSketch.

Next year comes and you're getting hope that this next Christmas is going to be better. How could it be any worse? Mom has fully remodeled the house with fresh decorations and she's promised you the new XBox 360 this year.

Well it's three games in and it doesn't look like a new XBox 360! It looks and smells like a fucking Atari 5200!!! I don't care how fancy the controllers seem, there is now way to play Halo on it like I was promised!

This is what the last several seasons has been like!

I'm getting a little tired of Callahan trying to sell us EtchaSketches and Atari 5200s and telling us that they are state of the art PSPs and XBox 360s. It's just our fault for not being able to see it...

What are you saying? That just because we couldn't put in more than 7-points at-home against Pitt that we probably won't do well going to Columbia?

Oh yeah, I guess that does make sense.

Our D is playing there asses off but our O is just freaking sad. Local radio has renamed it the Gulf Coast Offense
