PD's thread and hearing Sonic Youth on the radio got me thinkin'; if you were to prepare somebody with the basis for the indie music, what albums would you provide?

Daydream Nation?
Zen Arcade?
Doolittle?
Marquee Moon?

it would be hard not to include REM chronic town, murmur, and reckoning....."historically".

double nickels on the dime
meat puppets II
probably surfer rosa or come on pilgrim would "technically" be more "indie" than doolittle (but that's just semantics).
smiths hatful of hollow (compilation of UK singles, but most show up on the eponymous LP which is still, i think, their best)
i'm a sucker for echo and the bunnymen crocodiles (they actually play guitars and rock)
stooges funhouse (electra, but still--the sixties are clearly over with Iggy)
replacements let it be
big star for the southern so-called jangle pop stuff influence--db's, mitch easter, let's active, don dixon, westerberg claims some influence as well... etc.
bad brains
SY for sure

just for now.

it's also kinda different insofar as in the early mid 80's live shows were how a band spread word of mouth and gained rep....and relied on companies to print product instead of all the digital production available to bands these days.

i also think that everyone should sit down and listen to all 17 minutes of Sister Ray--in a chemically enhanced state of mind.

rite of passage type deal. it may take a few times; but, you ought to be able say you've done it.

JMO.
