There was no emergency so since the pilot didn’t cancel his emergency call it is pilot error.

In the meantime rational adults will wait for more info before casting judgement.

Just watched the idiot teleprompter reader comment about the conversation between the pilot and ATC. He notes that the pilot vents fuel after telling ATC he did not need a vector to a place where he could properly vent.

As a buddy of mine who is a pilot said, "Aviate, Navigate, Communicate".

He was a little busy and preoccupied, so he didn't bother telling ATC why he was a fukking moron for even asking about sending him out to the desert for a fuel dump.

He needed one thing from ATC, a clear runway. He got it. Everyone lived. A few balck kids got miosturized. Prolly helps with ashy skin, anyhow.

Here is one of the better videos of the fuel dump.

I believe the dump rate for the 777-200LR is approx. 2600kg per minute. 2600kg is 5732lbs. So 5732lbs per minute dump rate. Assuming they dumped fuel for 15 minutes they knocked about 86,000lbs off of their landing weight. There is no doubt even with this dumping they still landed over weight.

The FAA is investigating the dump and will weigh in at some point. Delta isn't saying anything.

But it is good to know this wasn't an emergency.

I watched that pilot's video.

Everything he says is true, however, he leaves out one small possibility, which Lefty has already said is certainly a concern.

What if the other engine shits the bed?

Neither was the other one going out.

He mentions that the pilots were able to recover power to the dud engine. He leaves out that it had a second stall.

That motor definitely had a problem.

Did it eat a bird during climb out?

Who knows?

The pilots were in emergency mode, put it down as fast as possible. They had no interest in going on a fuel dump run. They did have an interest in optimizing conditions for landing, even if it means a few folks on the ground have to take a shower or wash their car afterwards. He says the amount of fuel they were able to dump was inconsequential.

The basic laws of physics say other wise. Every pound they shed made that wounded bird more airworthy.

If you go back and listen to the tape, you will find that he said he didn’t need a vector to the neighborhood fuel dump.

This is different from saying he didn’t need to dump. He decided that making a beeline for the runway and dumping what he could on the way would be his best course of action to be able to watch assholes like you second guess him in the news the next day. They realized they were not following standard fuel dump protocol, but it wasn’t important at the moment. Getting back to the gate and not becoming a fireball was the priority.

They accomplished theirobjective.

Rack them.

And if you think my view on this has anything to do with bowing down to corporate masters like a good neocon lapdog, you’d be mistaken.

Delta is responsible for this. They are on the hook for any clean up costs. They should and I am sure will pay a modest amount of cash to anyone that took a jet-A shower.

Look at more than just the single line he wants to quote.

After the pilots declare an emergency the audio is as follows:

ATC: Roger I am going to need fuel onboard and souls. And amend your altitude, maintain 8000, expect left vectors back to Los Angeles.

This should be self explanatory. ATC told them to stop climbing if they hadn't already and to maintain 8000. ATC also let them know that they should be expecting left hand turns to return to LAX.

ATC: bring you back to LAX immediately or do you need to hold to burn fuel. You tell me what you need to do!

Again quite self explanatory. ATC is asking the pilot what he wants to do. Never mind the tiny ambulance chaser claiming the pilots don't get to do whatever they want.

Pilot Delta 89: We're gonna come back to LAX. We're not critical. We'll gonna slow to 280 knots and why don't you put us on a downwind at 8000 and keep us out of the terrain. And then we will return to LAX.

Now the pilot dictates to ATC what he wants to do. He dictates the speed they are going to fly. He tells them he wants to fly a downwind leg at their current altitude. He also wants ATC to keep them off of/away from any mountains. Then once they are clear of that they will right turn back to LAX.

ATC: Ok, so you don't need to hold to dump fuel or anything like that?

Clearly the controller is concerned about weight and landing at that weight which is totally due to fuel at this point.

Pilot Delta 89: Negative. We'll be requesting runway 25R.

Immediately the pilot responds negative to the request to hold somewhere. He clearly wants to return to LAX as soon as possible. He also requests a specific runway. 25R is the longest at LAX at almost 13000 feet. It is also on the south side of the airport which is on the opposite side of the airport from where they are currently. This is against the normal arrival flow. But with the emergency declaration he can dictate what he wants to do. Notice he has already focused on the return and has determined what runway is the longest for them.

ATC: Delta 89 heavy, turn right heading 100, vectors for ILS 25R.

This is the ATC controller telling Delta to make a right turn to heading 100 and that they will be set up to land on runway 25R. Notice this right turn is not what the controller first said. He initially said to expect left vectors back to LAX. But once the pilot said here is what I want, ATC followed along.

Jailhouse lawyer is focusing everything he has on 2 seconds of audio, "we're not critical." This doesn't mean what he is trying to sell. But again, it is what ambulance chasers will do when they think they have something. Ignore, deflect, and focus on a three word phrase, and nothing else.

Since the landing speed of a 777 is 150 knots and they were on final approach probably a bit hotter than that, there was NO extra airspeed, whatever the fuck that means.

Why did he need to?

Because it was his fukking aircraft. He decided that a fuel vent was prudent so he did it. And one more time, he was very heavy and on one leg. Any fuel dump would improve the chances of a safe landing.
