As for Tommy Smith, he earned his platform by winning gold, and he certainly had the right to speak his mind--but not during the Games. That is, all conflicts were put on hold for the duration of the games--about the same length as the modern version--and this included travel to and from Olympia. And this policy of a complete across the board cessation of conflict and politics is itself the real spirit and guiding principle of the Games.

And for Tommy Smith and his buddy John Carlos to simply disregard this ancient tradition--because his complaint was so pressing--to grandstand his (abstract) gripe during the medal ceremony was a disgrace. And for the media--now, not then--to somehow celebrate his selfish and callow behavior is itself the toxic marrow of Wokeness.

And again, Smith had earned the platform--just not there during the games. He could have come home and held rallies, given speeches, made a movie, wrote a book--whatever. But to impose his personal politics on the Games was typical of the Woke assholes then and now.
