Re: Say Dead Kid
Crap. Best Ever.
Right before the Rickwood game on Thursday.
He was just on the radio here talking about watching the rickwood game at home on TV and not going to bama.
Well, he died in the San Francisco Bay area.
So he died in a better place.
I remember going to see him at the Stick.
RIP Willie Mays.

RIP to the greatest all around baseball player ever.
Unfortunately my only memories of watching him was in the WS for the Mets. And he was just a tad past his prime.

My childhood hero. Mays (the Say Hey Kid), McCovey (Stretch), Marichal (the Dominican Dandy). My dad used to take me and a few friends to bat day at Candlestone every year for my birthday. Mine is two days after Willie’s. Can you imagine 20,000 kids with Louisville Slugger Little League bats today in one stadium?

Mays WAS baseball. The best ever. He and Mantle were my childhood.
Damn shame he was unable to get home again before he passed away.
RIP Mr. Mays.

Re: Say Dead Kid
I absolutely idolized Willie Mays as a kid.
The first baseball team I was on, at age 6 or 7, was the Giants. By pure luck, when our unis were issued, I got #24. From that day on I ate, slept, and drank The Say Hey Kid. That was my first experience with blatant racism, too, but that's a story for another day.
Willie Mays will always be the best ever. RIP #24

Re: Say Dead Kid
I'm glad I didn't realize as a kid that I wasn't supposed to idolize a player from the hated rival of the team I rooted for. As Dodgers fan, I guess I should've hated Mays. But my first glove was a Willie Mays signature model, my favorite position to play was center field, and I've never regretted being a fan of Willie. I'd like to say my dog is named for him, but mama threw that name out after I rejected a few others, and I was definitely ok with it since Mays was the first connection I made to it after she made the suggestion.
#24 was the consummate 5-tool player and prolly had a few other tools beyond those five. I didn't even really get to see him play much as he was nearing the end of his career when I started following baseball. I remember checking a book out about him from the school library when I was in about 2nd grade, and just fell in love with what he was all about as a ballplayer. Would even practice making basket catches when tossing the ball around.
You were the best, Willie.

I’m pretty sure every baseball fan from the 50-70s loved Willie. Hell, I’ll bet even Yankees fans who idolized that other center fielder from his era liked him.Smackie Chan wrote:I'm glad I didn't realize as a kid that I wasn't supposed to idolize a player from the hated rival of the team I rooted for. In addition to being the greatest ball player, he was a world class human being.
As for the Mantle/Mays comparison, I think if the Mic doesn’t step on that sprinkler head in the outfield, he might be in the GOAT conversation. Dude had more power than Willie and similar speed until he shredded his knee.

Saw him with the Giants play the Mets at Shea. He hit his 17th (I think) HR in August that was a record for many years.
Worth the price of admission.
