Weekend Roll Call 8-24-24

Post by kcdave »

Busy day on tap.
I don't even have a Sat vid for ya.
Maybe Chip will help out, as I am pretty much out of
vid ideas lately.

Surprisingly, not much grill biz this weekend.
Lots of honeydo's, however.

Chief's final pre-season fleecing of the fans was
as blah as the other 2 games. The real pursuit
of the 3-pete begins now. Cut downs loom.
Not sure why Toney hasn't been cut already.
Chiefs look to be going back to having a real
fullback. If you haven't heard of Carson Steele
yet, you soon will.

72 days until the election.

Anyone seen d-town lately? Looks like he is ghost.

Happy Weekend, Y'all.

Good morning. Gotta get in the kitchen and make something for my cousin Frank's celebration of life. He died several months ago and specifically did not want a funeral, he was cremated. So today, as stated by his wife:
Hey Everyone.
We will be hosting Frank's Celebration of Life, Saturday. August 24th from 1-4pm.

Per Franks wishes or as close to them as possible. We will have some shotgun Shells loaded with his ashes. There will not be a round of skeet but there will be targets thrown. You can shoot at a target and that will make Frank happy-probably laugh.

We will have something to munch on and we can visit and remember Frank.
This is a new one for me, and yes it is appropriate for the guy. He had a lot of guns, more than anyone I've ever known. Great guy, and since this is what he wanted, well let's go respect his wishes.

College football today! Just 4 games, but still CFB. Practice for the T1B season pickem contest here.

Had to go to Monroe for work this week, it is in the northeast part of Louisiana, and it was nice to drive around my home state. On the way back, I stopped by The Delta Music Museum in the small town of Ferriday. Small town, small museum, but it still was neat. I should have taken some pics but I didn't, here is one from the website with first cousins Mickey Gilley, Jimmy Swaggart, and Jerry Lee Lewis.

Hmmmm, ok per Dave's request, a video. For no particular reason, Promises in the Dark:

Since the Cooking Forum leaked into Cul de Smack this week, how about a bonus cooking video? I can't remember if we've talked about Stalecracker, who in his real life is a Louisiana State Trooper but he's created this alter ego character and he's actually a damn good cook (who definitely drinks while he cooks "while we wait, we hydrate"). If you want to know how we make jambalaya, gumbo, and other Louisiana foods, check out his videos on YouTube. Seems like most of the time he's cooking for 50-100 people or more, but this one is just a couple of red snappers on the grill:

Tune Town tonight? Y’all have a good one.

Returned yesterday from a week-long work trip to the finger lakes region of NY for work. Did take a co-worker from WA to Niagara Falls on the way back. She had never been there, so it felt good to me to be able to make that happen for her. Yardwork earlier today and probably tomorrow also, then back on a work roadtrip to eastern PA on monday. Fuck, I hate the 'burbs of Philadelphia.

That was an entertaining demonstration. There's certainly a limit to how much of that guy I could watch at once.

Eric in ABQ wants to know if he can get the same results putting the fish in a ziplock baggie and swirling it around in lukewarm water for 10 hours.

This morning's haul from the weekly pilgrimage to the Farmers Market. I have to be careful how much stuff I buy there because there's a limit to how much two of us can eat in a week. Today I passed up the kale, mushrooms, cucumbers, eggplant, basil, and a bunch of other stuff.

Image

This week's progress on the back yard partial remodel:

Plastering is completed on these two walls. This area was a small lawn up until about 15 years ago when we just let it go. I'm going to re-purpose the irrigation, stubbing it up into the two raised beds, but I need to go through and make sure all of the unused sections are capped off before the pavers go in.

Image

The new fireplace is starting to take shape. The firebox is done (still needs to be lined) and the damper has been put in. Still need to build the chimney, which will add about another four or five feet on top.

The retaining wall in the utility area is complete. We're also going to fill in the small area next to the house with pavers and put in a potting table so Mrs. Mikey can work on propagating some plants and stuff. The red stake marks where a sleeve is going in to support and folding clothesline.

Looking forward to some Tune Town tonight.

I understand. Again, he's created a character, normally he looks like this:

Despite that character, he's a really good cook. Here he is making pastalaya for 1000 people a few weeks ago at the MLB All Star game:

His version of shrimp and grits:

Chicken and sausage gumbo for 500 people:

Well that's what happened. It was unusual but somehow quite fitting for him. And as 88 noted in Tune Town chat last night, it was reminiscent of Hunter Thompson's funeral.

Some pics from yesterday. Frank then:

That last pic is me, and yes I hit the target. As Frank wanted, he went out with a bang.

Wife turned 40 today so I set up a few festivities over the weekend starting with a wine pairing at a local wine bar/food bar down the street from our house with all her female friends. She and her friends thoroughly enjoyed it.

Friday I took her to lunch at our favorite burger joint (Lankford’s Grocery) and Friday night she and I took the baby for Pad Thai at our favorite Thai restaurant (Khaosan Road).

Saturday I let mama chill and sleep in while the baby and I ran some errands. I installed a potting plant irrigation system in all her plants, pruned them and added fresh soil.

Sunday we headed to the St Arnold brewery to meet family and friends.

Today I ordered her favorite breakfast tacos, got her a cake, and picked up the kids a little early from school to have her open gifts and blow out candles on a small cake.

RACK

Happy Wife = Happy Life

My wife's birthday is coming up in about three weeks. We're going to go and see Bonnie Raitt and James Hunter (who I'm not familiar with but is supposed to be pretty good). Here daughter and granddaughter (grown) may be coming out from NYC, so other events will depend on whether that happens or not.

So Mr. Roux, your departed cousin and the others participating in the ceremony... any of them religiously inclined folk, at all?

Yeah, there were several there who attend church every Sunday. Pretty common in small town Louisiana.

Not looking to pick with anyone too much Mr. Roux it's just that blowing someone's remains out of a shot gun like that may just qualify as desecration of remains. It isn't a matter of secular law and it does not matter if the deceased wanted to go on with that.

Your body is a loaner, and you get one. When the constituent molecules finish their biochemical dance routines, your lease is up and the particles should be returned to the Owner in a decorous manner befitting a species that is aiming to transcend the level of lower animals. Or drunken frat boys "brain-storming" ways to ~go out with a bang~.

The standard cautionary tale was of course the horribly fuxxored action authored by Achilles (see: Illiad, Homer). The consequences, mang.

Tell you what: this week I'll forgo praying for Quadrilateral and Rhombus and use that audience with the Boss to beg forgiveness on behalf of some well meaning, yet meshuggeneh Cajuns.

Thank you for your kind words, and no doubt Frank appreciates them as well.

But should you get an audience with the Boss, I suggest that you utilize that time in a more productive manner than over such a minute and trivial matter. Consider our place in the observational universe:

Seems like whatever may happen on our planet would be truly insignificant to the Boss.

In the unlikely event that He is concerned about humans on Earth, it still seems like fulfilling someone's wishes regarding their remains should be way way way down on the list of His priorities. Eliminating childhood cancer is just one example that should be more important.

In any event, Genesis 18:27: “By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” Frank's process merely was expedited.

Please tell the Boss hello for me and send him my regards.

Seems like he only plays large arenas these days, but still hard to get tickets.
