BREAKING: Shots Fired Near Trump Golf Club, President Present But ‘Safe.’

Shots were fired in the vicinity of the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach on Sunday afternoon as President Trump was golfing. The Trump campaign confirmed the incident, reporting only that “President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity.”

UPDATE: 3:25PM EST – Secret Service agents are believed to have spotted a shooter in a tree line, returning fire, before the suspect fled. President Trump is believed to have been the target, with media sources also suggesting the gunman had a backpack, a rifle, and a GoPro video camera.

Campaign spokesman Steven Cheung added: “No further details at this time,” while the U.S. Secret Service confirmed the incident, stating: “The Secret Service, in conjunction with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating a protective incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred shortly before 2 p.m. The former president is safe. @pbso will have more details soon.”

So would be assassin was in a tree, fired shots at Trump and the "secret service" returned fire...allowing the perp to climb down and casually stroll away from the scene...never to be heard from again...Hmmm...another B team secret service appointed by the admin?

A civil war will happen, and rightfully so.

Americans have had enough of the bulllshit- a
government and media they no longer trust.

Americans have felt powerless for so long, and when a guy like Trump comes along that wants to flip over tables and totally reorganize the way government is run, they feel like they finally have someone on their side.

The elections are a great example. We need to go back to only voting on Election Day, and if you vote absentee it will be provisional until the ballot can be vetted thoroughly.

And a photo ID is needed for both circumstances. No excuses. Proof of citizenship required.

I’ve yet to hear a good reason not to have ID to vote.

We used to know late in election night who won by exit polling. Now it drags on for days because of the lax voting methods.

I deleted it. Didn't realize the topic of the thread, didn't want to get off on a tangent, it wasn't relevant.

It was horrific that this has happened even once. Now a second time. Such violence has no place in society, I'm glad that the shooter was caught and hopefully he will be put away for a long, long time.

I keep seeing it reported that Routh was ~300-500 yards from Trump when the SS agent engaged Routh with his firearm. Secret Service to the rescue!

This fallacy is presented as if that's the distance from which he would attempt to shoot Trump. Truth is, there's NO WAY Routh could have shot at Trump with that rifle from ~300-500 yards with any accuracy. Over the counter AK-47s are notorious for their lack of range and accuracy. Especially with over the counter 7.62x39 ammunition. That shot would require a custom built AK with a milled receiver, a bougie trigger & barrel, and precisely hand-loaded ammo.

Apparently the SS agent was scouting ahead one hole in front of Trump's group. That's when he detected Routh and shot 4-6 rounds at him [btw, WHY didn't the SS agent score at least one hit? Shameful]. To hit/kill Trump, the would-be assassin would have had to wait, undetected, until Trump was playing the hole in from of him, or at least be inside 200 yards. Then he'd be in range for a center mass hit from a shooter who practices regularly. Routh failed due to lack of prep, a shitty plan of action, and a shitty choice of rifle. SCIII's own Proper Tool would clown Routh: "ALWAYS use the proper tool for the job."

Once again, the Secret Service scores an epic fail. A properly trained and equipped shooter would have succeeded, just like in Butler, PA.

I agree with many of your comments. But an AK-47 (which I have fired many times) can put a lot of those 7.62x39 rounds 300-500 yards down range, no problem. Most of the time people with AK's spray and pray (i.e., as you point out they are not great sniper weapons). But I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of a volley fired from anyone with an AK 300-500 yards away, even that kook.

If what you describe is accurate (I haven't seen the news), then it sounds like the Secret Service did its job. The potential perp never got a shot off. I think it would be very hard to completely neutralize the possibility of a crack pot taking a pot shot at someone playing a round of golf at a course in an urban area.

We don't really know this; a lot of assumptions being made to reach that conclusion. Granted, plans & procedures can certainly be implemented and executed to defeat the SS's defense. But it's hard to characterize the SS's actions in this case as an epic fail - they did what they were supposed to do under the circumstances. They were fortunate that the perp wasn't as prepared or skilled as he could've been, but we don't know what would've happened if that weren't the case. You're speculating based on a sample size of one recent event, and also perhaps including the fact that they missed him when they took shots at him as part of your failure criteria.

Their job in this case was to protect Trump. There was a potential threat to his life from which he walked away, and the perp was apprehended. Had the SS not been there, not sure that would've been the outcome. Can't see how that rates a failing grade.
