CFP Possibilities
This writer seems certain that Alabama is in. I am not that confident.

Honestly, I think South Carolina is a better team right now, but I get that you can't ignore head to head.

Re: CFP Possibilities
This is the problem with a 12 team playoff. No team that lost 1 in 4 games should even be considered. But when you water down the regular season this is what we get.

Re: CFP Possibilities
Seems logical to me. There should not be any 3-loss teams in consideration at this point in time.Left Seater wrote: ↑Mon Dec 02, 2024 1:57 pm This is the problem with a 12 team playoff. Generally I agree with y’all. However, you have a team like Miami (10-2) playing a weak schedule, winning multiple games by a gnat’s hair, and questionable calls aiding two of those wins.
That said, Bama is not a consistently good team. They don’t deserve a spot. Yet, if they get in, with the lack of any dominant team, they could win it all!

Re: CFP Possibilities
Except we don’t live in that world anymore. This is all about maximizing value capture. The power 4, 12 game regular season, cash grab CCG, and 12 team playoff is bringing more eyeballs, more betting opportunities, and lining the pockets of the networks, streaming platforms, and institutions.Left Seater wrote:This is the problem with a 12 team playoff. Anything you compare to 5 years ago is not even a fair comparison.

Re: CFP Possibilities
College football doesn’t need more eyeballs or betting opportunities or NIL money.
It needs to go the other way so longtime fans don’t check out. Chasing the trendy while upsetting the base is bd business.

The landscape was shifting and value cases were pointing to models of maximizing premium matchup opportunities during regular season and expanding the playoff model. Every major sport in the US expanded their playoff model.
MLB went from 4 teams to 8 teams in 1994
Expanded to One-game wildcard playoff in 2012
Expanded to 12 teams in 2022
NFL expanded playoff teams to 12 in 1990
NFL expanded playoff teams to 14 in 2020
Added a regular season game in 2021
NBA expanded to 16 teams in 1984
Expanded series from 3 to 5 games in first round
Expanded first round from 5 to 7 games in first round in 2003
Expanded to play-in round robin with 7-10 seeds playing each other for final 2 spots.
CFB D1 major conference realignment in 1994 included first ever conference championship games.
CFB added BCS model where 1-2 ranked schools played each other in 1998
CFB allowed teams to play up to 12 games in 2006.
CFB D1 expanded to 4-team playoff in 2014
CFB required that all D1 teams play 12 games in 2024, and expanded playoffs to 12 teams.
D2 CFB has 28 teams in the playoffs.
If your base was going to bail, they would have already with the major realignment in ‘94, the BCS in ‘99, or the 4-team playoff in 2014.
The formula for today’s world is squeezing out every possible situation to maximize the number of eyeballs for every single game via streaming or cable.
This base you speak of isn’t steering the ship anymore. They haven’t for 30 years.

Re: CFP Possibilities
You might want to rethink your MLB and NBA examples. Viewership is down. Baseball attendance is up due to rule changes, but expanding playoffs and adding in season tournaments further dilute the regular season.

Re: CFP Possibilities
MLB seems to have the best balance of regular season intensity leading into playoff intensity. Only 12 teams get in and they get winnowed to 8 in a hurry. MLB post season is more about momentum than seeding so there's a perfect transition to post season action. If a team is hot in the wild card, look out! The rounds move quickly. It's a marathon season followed by a sprint in October. There's no better post season than MLB.
By comparison, the NBA post season feels like it's as long as the regular season. It's ridiculous. 2/3 of NBA teams make the playoffs or wild card. The playoffs last from mid April to late June. Three months. Why even have a regular season at this point?

The best post season is the NHL. Winning 16 games takes a huge toll.HighPlainsGrifter wrote: ↑Tue Dec 03, 2024 11:46 pm MLB seems to have the best balance of regular season intensity leading into playoff intensity. One could make the same ‘why even have a regular season’ in baseball argument. No sport plays more games, and 40% of their teams make the post season. But your point about a team getting hot is spot on and makes my point. The super long regular season means next to nothing if a hot team can sneak in over the last week.

I didn’t say it was the most watched, I said it was the best.
You also only used US numbers. If you add in Canadian viewers, where 7 of the 30 NHL teams are located it surpasses MLB.

I agree with you. Bama was lucky as hell to win that game.
I don’t recall a better QB run than the young Gamecock Sellers made to beat Clemson. It was ridiculous. He eluded the rush, outran guys to the corner, broke tackles. There was no way he shoulda gotten into the endzone.

Re: CFP Possibilities
By sometimes are you referring to this decade or millennium?
Re: CFP Possibilities
Wrong and wrong. The best postseason by a full furlong has always and will always be March Madness.
Followed next by the Nitto ATP Finals in Italy in November (which Jannik Sinner just won, joining fellow cis male past winners like Djokovic, Sampras, Becker, Navratilova, Lendl and Edberg).

No fucks to give about what Canada is watching. I actually
do like watching hockey and would watch 120 plus Royals
games per year, if MLB ever pulls their heads out of their
asses and makes it cheap and easy to do so. But the NFL is KING.
Y'all are just arguing over 2nd and 3rd place.
