Are you a better poster...

Post by Softball Bat »

than you were 25 years ago?

I began posting on "Rome boards" in the fall of 1999, 25 years ago.
That is when I began posting on any message board.

I am a more organized poster than I was 25 years ago.
I am more mellow, more measured.
My perspective is different.

Is Bill Belichick a better coach than he was 25 years ago?
At age 72, and a six-time Super Bowl winning coach, Bill B. is going to take on the UNC job next fall.

UNC.
lol

I didn't see this coming.

We share the same time line, both are more mellowed and measured,
and neither saw the Belichick issue happening.
I post much less than years ago. Is less better or worse?

Except for a few of us, every poster still on this board after 25 years is exponentially more racist and fascist than they were 25 years ago. This is a fact, despite all the good intentions from the golden years of Obama and Joe in office.

I would also venture to say that most posters are more transphobic and xylophobic than 25 years ago, but it’s unclear whether transphobia and xylophobia were even a thing back in those days.

Anyways, if I had to do it all over again, I would still vote for Gore Lieberman until I was blue in the face. The 14th district of NY, as always, got that right in 2000.

Hell I would vote for Joe Lieberman TODAY over that sucker/loser Grover Trump. Any Joe is better than radical Nazi Socialists! (Of course, I would still include Kamala as a write-in for #2 in case Joe was more dead than previously assumed by the media.)

Maybe, maybe not. I know I've grown a lot more impatient with people. Having grown children and grand children has mellowed me a bit. I take people for what they are and try not to react to their stupidity as much. I still get riled up once in a while but it's not really worth it. I stepped away from here for a while but have started to visit a little more frequently.

I used to read the boards because I thought what was posted was funny. Sadly, most of that has been gone for a while. I think I come back here mostly out of habit (like a dude hooked on cigarettes). But I also come here because I've managed to meet a few of the people who post here and its a good way to keep in touch with them. Plus Tune Town, of course.

Am I a better poster? Probably. But far less frequent. And much more cautious. Having people call you at the office and telling the receptionist that they are "Mr. Tosser" can be disturbing (yes, that fucker did it).

I think it's about 24 years for me. I got here during SCIII, but it didn't last long.

It was a fun time. New posters every day. New threads dropping off the first page in hours.

What was your first memorable thread?

Mine was DC Smack's jerkoff thread. Fukking comedy gold.

I started on StuckNut in 2005 and introduced myself (originally RumpleForeskin) in a thread and dropped a pic of my then wife who had some extra weight on her. I was a terrible poster back in the day and this board was out of my league.

Moreese, Mike Backer, PSU, Dins, Mister Bushice, Mgo, Mvscal, R-Jack, etc were just high quality and very quick witted. Made a fool of myself a lot back then.

As stated above, the board has changed. Most of you take yourselves way too serious and forgot how to have fun and keep it light. It’s almost impassible to take a thread that has nothing to do with politics and keep it that way.

Unfortunately, that sh*t finds it way into my Houston Cougars board and on most other social media platforms.

I’m a much better poster than I was 20 years ago, but I wish we could back to those days.

No. It was more like this.

ST: I figured out who you are. This is Salad Tosser from The Trolls.

ME: [silently] WTF?

ST: Just thought you should know. Later, dude. [Click.]

I later met him IRL at a bar in Cleveland. WTFx100. Just sayin. RIP ST.

There is not a lot to tell. He was in Cleveland for an afternoon baseball game. He called me at the office and wanted to meet up at a bar after the game. I said "sure". At the agreed upon time, I went to the bar. No ST. I hung around for about half an hour and then texted him that I was going to go home because I could not find him. A few minutes later he texted back that he was sorry, and he was heading to a different bar and I should go there. So I did. And he didn't show up again. Now its like 7 p.m. or something, and Mrs. 88 is not happy that I'm not home from the office to help with the boys etc. So for the second time, I texted him that I was going to take off. And for the second time, he apologized and said he got caught up "in some shit" and that he would for sure, 100% show up at yet another bar. So I went there (like a dumb ass). And this time he did show up. He was completely shit-hammered. Drunk, for sure. On drugs, very likely. He was drooling and stumbling and spilling beer everywhere. This was an old school dive bar in Cleveland (which is used to that behavior), but still a bit unnerving. These places have a tendency to flush people into the street with violent force when the behavior crosses a certain threshold of depravity, which I think wanders around based on the general vibe in the place. Anyway... I hung out with him and his completely shitfaced crew for about 20 minutes and then, when it was obvious they had no idea what was happening around them or that they were soon to be pounded into the street, left the bar and went home. Dude partied very, very hard. RIP.

BarFlie used to record my radio shows and host the recordings on a server that also housed a message board for the unit he was assigned to in Viet Nam. We spoke and texted often, and he was always good about getting back to me. The wife & I were planning a vacation that would take us near where he lived in NC, so I texted him to let him know we'd be in his neck of the woods and that we should meet up somewhere. He didn't respond after numerous attempts to contact him. My wife did some online sleuthing and found an article in his local newsrag with his mugshot, saying local, state, & Federal law enforcement had descended upon his house (and listed the address), and arrested him for possession & distribution of kiddie porn.

While driving to our vacation destination, we decided to swing by the address listed in the article. The front door had fallen victim to a battering ram. I chose not to enter. From his driveway, I called the local jail to see if he was there. They confirmed he was. I was told when visiting hours were and went there. This town was like a real-life Mayberry. We were able to visit him for about 10 minutes, shackled & cuffed in black & white striped jail PJs, behind a double-paned bullet-proof window about 1' x 1'. He was a small, sad, pathetic looking specimen. Said they caught him with a few dozen "tasteful" thumbnail-sized pix of young girls. We left after visitation and never saw or spoke to him again.

Was able to track his planned legal proceedings and moves to different detention centers with help from another poster over the next year or so. His case never went to trial. He was released, presumably for health reasons, and died shortly thereafter.

The end.

Let's punch that up a little bit.

I'd open with 'Ingrates caught in explosion!!', then move on to people having sex in paragraphs two through four.

Also, I find what you're wearing helps posting immeasurably. Throw on some tweeds, it works for me.

Tweeds sound like a great idea. Adding a vest with a pocket watch would probably get me to an F. Scott Fitzgerald flow state. That sounds nice. Much better than the debauchery it takes to get into a Hemmingway flow, imo.

The Barflie story was sad. You chat with fukkers on line for many years and you think you get to know them. Barf pretty well blew that notion out of the water.

I have met 2 of you douchebags, SC and 88. Both seemingly upstanding members of their communities. Far more respectable than you'd think.
