Grammy Awards
Anybody watch the Grammys on Sunday?
Things sure have changed over the years. What used to be a pretty good show has degenerated into three hours of Trevor Noah (who actually was pretty funny) and mind-numbing "pop", rap and bowing down to Beyonce for making a "Country Western" album. Oh, she FIINALLY won Album of the Year (I'll have to admit that I haven't listened to any of it and not all that interested).
Some of the new artist performances were pretty good, but none of them had a chance against Chappell Roan or Sabrina Carpenter. If I never hear of or see either of them (or Kendrick Lamar) again in my life it will not be diminished at all. "I Love LA" in the opening was a really good performance but an all star cast.
From what they had on the show you would never know that there were categories for rock, metal, jazz, bluegrass, gospel, blues, Americana, etc., etc.
I don't think I heard any of these (and a lot of others) even mentioned.
The Stones won a Grammy for best Rock Album
Chick Corea and Bela Fleck won for Best Jazz Instrumental
Nora Jones won for Best Pop Album
Chris Stapleton for Best Country Solo Performance (thank God it wasn't Beyonce)
Sierra Ferrell won four Grammys in the Roots and Americana categories
Billy Strings for Bluegrass Album
Taj Mahal for Best Traditional Blues Album
Cory Henry for Best Roots Gospel Album
Samara Joy for Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best Jazz Performance (we happen to have tickets to see her in Los Angeles on Friday)
So many others that you wouldn't even know exist. I guess that they have to go for the TV ratings. Maybe they have some of the others available for streaming on Paramount+. I'll have to check that out.

Re: Grammy Awards
Yeah for some reason they didn’t show that on CBS.

When I moved back to America, it was very quickly clear (ABUNDANTLY) that pretty much everything has degraded.Mikey wrote:What used to be a pretty good show has degenerated...

Nobody in the “mainstream” does rock anymore. It’s antiquated boomer music, and they’re the sole survivors, if you want to call it that.Softball Bat wrote: ↑Thu Feb 06, 2025 2:23 amWhen I moved back to America, it was very quickly clear (ABUNDANTLY) that pretty much everything has degraded.Mikey wrote:What used to be a pretty good show has degenerated...

What is rock? Why was rock popular?
Re: Grammy Awards
You’re absolutely correct. Example: The real king of rock and roll was not Elvis but Richard Penniman.Innocent Bystander wrote: ↑Thu Feb 06, 2025 2:45 amRock is black.Mikey wrote: ↑Thu Feb 06, 2025 2:39 amNobody in the “mainstream” does rock anymore. Sad.

Watch this movie if you have any doubts at all.

Mick Jagger never moved on stage until he saw Little Richard.
The Beatles met Little Richard before they hit, and were awestruck. Paul McCartney got a lot of his vocal chops from him.
Most of the big British bands in the early 60s were covering blues music that most Americans never heard.
I could go on. Rock is based mostly on the blues and there were so many black artists in the 50s and early 60s who never got due credit.
That’s why I mostly listen to the blues station on XM. It’s the closest thing we have anymore. To answer your final question - rock isn’t popular anymore. I guess that didn’t answer your question. Why “was” it popular? I don’t know. I loved it and so did a lot of others. There were a lot of reasons. There probably have been many dissertations written on that. Today’s “pop” music is not even in the same universe.
And BTW…Cynthia Erivo stole the show with her performance of Fly Me to the Moon during the Quincy Jones tribute. I went and checked out some of her YouTube videos and, damn, that girl can sing.

Assholes can be geniuses. Do you hate Kanye because he's an asshole, or because jewish persons told you to hate him?
Re: Grammy Awards
I don’t know if I hate him. I just don’t have any respect for his “talent” or his assholedness. A matter of personal taste I guess. Jewish persons didn’t tell me one way or the other.Innocent Bystander wrote: ↑Thu Feb 06, 2025 10:19 pm Assholes can be geniuses. And yes, assholes can be geniuses, and vice versa. Many extremely talented folks in the various arts throughout history have had some strange and/or disgusting personality traits.
