Been listening to Decemberists more lately. The new one has a little heavier feel, which I like.

Just this morning, I learned that Decemberists are playing the Bite this summer. A truly great event, ten times over. The organizers from the city ROCK! I'm wondering if they're going to try and rope in all the transplanted "local" bands to open for them, like Modest Mouse, The Shins, etc. Maybe get the Thermals(not transplants) up there......maybe not, since they'd probably try to bring Sleater-Kinney with them, and I'd have to leave and go ISSUE beers somewhere else until they were done. I know the Dandy Warhols are too high and mighty these days to play such a pedestrian show. Death Cab put on a deece show last year, opening for TMBG.

Dins is stoked, because life is good.

Excellent move, Sir Dinsinator. The Decemberists are muey bueno good. They are a frequent go-to band live as well. Worth catching at the Bite if you can still make out the stage through your undoubtedly bloodshot peepers.

Anymore, I think the Bite folks try to make friday night the "young people's" night. Last few years, the after-work, evening's festivities start with Dr. Theopolis, and grow from there. Been some great shows. The bands usually get pretty pumped when 40,000 screaming drunks start dancing while they're vomiting.

I will be trying my damnedest to make sure I have that friday off, so as to properly prefunction, and hop on the Big Orange Taxi (I'm Old Skool U&L, baby. They'll always be the Big Orange Taxi, even though they haven't been orange for many years. I'm sure I'll have my traditional spiked Big Gulp in hand.), get my happy ass to the Waterfront, eat a bunch of grossly overpriced grub, and get my groove on early, and stay until late. I ususally use the later hours to stage some truly epic flameouts with the hotties, so I have that going for me.

Am I smelling a U&L trollstop in the near future? Pack up your babies and grab your old lady, cause everyone knows, how cool the Bite goes.

From the Satyricon. Not sure that even after the resurrection, that place will ever be what it once was. For a club about the size of your living room, place was epic. That is a pic from 1990, with Nirvana opening up for Mudhoney. Skank in the inset was one of the Satyricon regulars, who ended up marrying Mr. Cobain. I can't over-empahsize how small the place is.

They've at least announced some bands. Not quite a schedule yet, but some bands.

Looks like friday night will be local heros Dr. Theopolis, follwed by the Violent Femmes, followed by The Decemberists. I think that's how it's going down.

The other nights look a little more geriatric. Little Richard, Steppenwolf, and some others.

8/12, it will rule to be me, and suck to be you, as per usual. Maybe I can keep the alcohol consumption down to where I'll only piss off a portion of the crowd, rather than all of it, which could be as large as 40-50,000. Big party, and a heck of a deal for 5 bucks.

But NO ONE who goes into the indie scene can play. That's why they get into it -- because talentless players seek out talentless listeners. Please fucking tell me you knew?

OK, I'll amend that to "few indie people" can play. Very few. Hell, the Warhols chick didn't know a note before she joined the band. I've mentioned it before -- back in the day, Cortney's name and "talent" didn't come up in the same sentence very often. Forunately for him, his chosen genre doesn't require it. When in doubt, try to appeal to socail outcasts who will do anything to be a part of something.

You realize dude didn't have a hit until he was about 30. Prior to that, he pretty well gravytrained others, until he learned how to exploit the indietard's lack of self-esteem. His earlier bands were Nu History(another bunch of talentless hacks, which every last one of were people I knew/know), and after that(right before the Warhols) was Nero's Rome, which he was the drummer for. Knew a couple of guys from Nero's Rome, too. They actually ended up getting some love and were on the first Lallapalooza tour, maybe the second one, too. I think internal ego strife did them in, apparently because it's more important to be a washed-up never-was and be right, than continue to build on success and sacrifice Bode.

I think he had another band in there somewhere, but I can't remember.

Emerging from behind the tattered glamour that is San Francisco’s poorly-named Bimbo’s 365 Club, The Decemberists took the stage as a 21st-century Devo. The entire band had chosen to don quasi-naval khaki uniforms with high collars, and they stood rigidly behind their instruments; stoic, immobile, and androgynous. “Do you like our swarthy sailor outfits?” lead singer Colin Meloy asked. “It is North Beach, after all.” And with that, the overly serious indie-rock stuffiness evaporated. Meloy, who looks like a cross between Conan O’Brien and Crispin Glover, got too warm and doffed his uniform, revealing a less-dopey polo shirt and jeans, the band started to smile and move around the stage, and the show was on.

It turns out the Decemberists had reasons to be wound up that night. Their third full album, Picaresque, hit stores that day, and less than a week before, a trailer carrying their equipment and merchandise had been stolen outside of Portland. Their trailer and t-shirts for sale (and, sadly, their sailor outfits) had been recovered, though as of the San Francisco show, they were still missing thousands of dollars of instruments.

Perhaps the band had only borrowed or hocked hammer dulcimers, accordions, double basses, violins, guitars, keyboards, etc., but if they were a few instruments short of their usual menagerie, no one was the wiser. The sound was full and energetic, and right to the very end, the band kept busting out new noise-makers like hurdy-gurdies, giant tambourines, and little keyboards that they held up to a microphone and blew into.

The show was split rather evenly between tracks off the new album and old standbys, though the crowd seemed to know each equally well (curse that darned internet). Meloy’s twelve-string guitar and theatrical lyrics sung in a powerfully nasal voice formed the backbone of each song, his every line an exercise in vocal dexterity. Take this tongue-twister, from “July, July”: “And I'll say your camisole was sprightly light magenta / When in fact it was a nappy bluish grey.” Or this set of alliterations, from “The Bagman’s Gambit”: “Purloined in Petrograd, they were suspicious of where your loyalties lay / So I paid off a bureaucrat to convince your captors there to secret you away.” Mouthfuls, to be sure, these lines raised the bar for hopeful sing-alongers in the audience.

Though the band kept coming back to self-described “dirges”, the best moments were the up-tempo songs that forced them to be at their theatrical and enthusiastic best, as with the hopeful-sounding “Los Angeles, I’m Yours,” and the echoes of “Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da” in “Billy Liar”. It was a show, too, that kept getting better as it went on. The big accordion polka “The Mariner’s Revenge Song” had the whole crowd stomping and dancing – as much as cool indie-rock kids can dance – to close the first and only set.

Knowing they had something good going, the band didn’t take long to return for the encore. Meloy strapped on an electric guitar for the first time all night, and they launched into the positively rocking, five-part “The Tain.” It seemed a strange choice to change the tone of the music for the encore, but the dark and nasty rock opera closed the night with a bang. “The Tain” migrated from a spare hard-rock riff to soft harmonies by violinist Petra Haden and keyboardist Jenny Conlee and finally to full-on rocking splendor, telling a fable of blood and sex and witches. All in all, a fitting end to a night at the pop circus.

Dude, for the last few Bite shows, I've rarely remembered one freaking song. My memories of the last few are the North Mississippi All Stars doing Shake It On Down as an encore (I think), and last year Death Cab opened with A Movie Script Ending, after which They Might Be Giants finished up with Istanbul.

I tend to drink a little too much at The Bite. Once I leave the wheels at home and hop on the Big Orange Taxi (even though the city bussus aren't orange anymore), let the freaking drinks flow like....wine or something.

That's just tonight. If I'm feeling particularly ambitious, tomorrow night has a big local showcase (then again, the Decemberists and a bunch of the other bands you guys talk about started in the local showcases), followed by Little Richard. I think I'm going to have to go ahead and miss me some Little Richard. Sunday night is....I don't remember. A couplefew cool bands, followed by Steppenwolf. Not quite as cool a lineup as some past years, but should be a great weekend (although I guess Mother Nature is supposed to turn the thermostat back up). And for $5 that goes to Special Olympics, it's hard to go wrong.

I love this town. I'll say that again, since I won't be saying it much come January. Then again, January isn't so bad, if you can stay busy.
