Player movement and rumour thread
Messier wants to finish his career in Edmonton. I wonder what Ryan Smyth thinks about that?
Detroit will not keep Yzerman. Ottawa is interested in him for obvious reasons.
Toronto is stuck with Nolan. Apparently, teams cannot buy out injured players. He will undergo knee surgery next week.
Washington is set to announce their signing of Ovechkin on Monday.
Gary Roberts is heading to Ottawa.

It will be a cold day in Hell before you see Steve Yzerman wearing anything but the winged wheel.Captain Haddock wrote:

I heard Yzerman in a radio interview last week that he'd retire before he signs with another team. If you can't trust his word, who can you trust?
He might step aside for the fact that the Wings are trying to stay under the cap and he might not fit into their plans. It's not a sure thing that he'll be back...should know in the next couple of weeks on what his plans are. I don't think there's any friction over the coaching change and health will somewhat be a factor in his decision to play. I hope he plays one more year but he's accomplished enough and he doesn't need to prove anything to me.
Out of Detroit, McCarty is a prime candidate for a buyout...he just signed a new deal before the lockout. Whitney and Hatcher are likely to be bought out as well and the Wings won't pick up Joseph's club option for $6 million. If Yzerman hangs it up, that's even more money that is freed up for them to put their roster together.

Nolan will still be bought out.Captain Haddock wrote:Messier wants to finish his career in Edmonton. I wonder what Ryan Smyth thinks about that?

Oh he's going to file a grievance but he was cleared to play last November.
Of course there is also another likely scenario which was suggested by another Leaf fan on another site..
can't believe you all can't see beyond your noses on this one. What a wouderful coup-de tate Nolan is on medical from an injury occured before the CBA is radified so of course he can't be held accountable for his contract BUT because they were misinformed by OUTSIDE medical staff They can file a greivece about his salary counting towards the cap not only is his salary paided by insurance the league can't count his salary against the cap because they can't buy him out. So what will happen is Nolan will return at the start of the season without his salary counting towards the salary cap. He can claim immunity from buyout because noone can pick him up after the limit and the leafs can claim that his salary against the cap would be null and void for the year affectively freeing him up to play with his pay no on the salary cap. The leafs retain Nolan His salary doesnot count against the cap and insurance pays his salary until he is able to play. com on what is bad about that? Even former Leafs Assistant GM, Bill Watters said there is no way they can hold this against the leafs and Nolan can't become a free agent in the middle of a season.

The Leafs will buy out Nolan, because doctors cleared him to play in November (if there was going to be a season). Waters was on Sportsnet this morning and said the Leafs may have to buy him out at full price, and not the $0.60 on the dollar rate everyone else will.
Roberts and Newy will play for the leafs this year, they'll work something out. Lindros will be Leaf, and so will Glen Murray. I think the Leafs should buy out Belfour and pick Khabibulin.

Forsberg is quoted as saying he'd like to play on the same team with his friend, Markus Naslund. And it isn't likely the Xvalanche will be going after Naslund.Otis wrote:Is that who they're planning on signing to replace Peter Forsberg?SoCalTrjn wrote:Ziggy Palffy will sign with the Colorado Avalanche
Forsberg's rumoured to be signing with the Leafs.
Neidemayer's said he will test the free agency market.
Translated that means, adios to New Jersey...

You got the wrong kind of Leaf fan here. For me, every new Leaf season begins, deep down, with the knowledge that the Leafs have no chance at winning the cup.al? wrote:Another year, another scrapped parade.Hapday wrote:

The good thing about a salary cap is that it will force the Leafs to actually hire a scouting staff. I don't think they've had one since the 50's and that's even debateable.

If he's looking to sign with a competitive team in a big hockey market... why not sign with the team captained by his other friend and fellow countryman, Mats Sundin...In Sweden, hockey fans already are fantasizing about a Mats Sundin-Forsberg union, though there also are rumours that Forsberg and fellow unrestricted free agent and Vancouver Canucks captain Markus Naslund will shop themselves as a package.
Forsberg's future with Colorado has been in doubt. To keep Joe Sakic and Rob Blake and restock the Avs -- Sakic and Blake were invited to a team news conference yesterday as a signal they're staying -- Forsberg would have to be sacrificed, with Alex Tanguay possibly moving to centre.
Forsberg has told friends that he prefers to stay in Denver but if that club's hefty payroll has no wiggle room under the $39-million US salary cap, he wants to go to a competitive team in a big hockey market. Cue the Blue and White bandwagon to welcome him at Union Station. The Leafs would even have jersey No. 21 ready thanks to Robert Reichel's convenient departure.
But Toronto general manager John Ferguson won't talk about Forsberg, citing NHL tampering rules, though it's interesting that he has met his agent, Don Baizley, in the past few days regarding another client, Swedish prospect Alexander Steen.
I am not sure if I would want Forsberg on the Leafs. One of two things will happen to Peter Forsberg. He'll either:Otis wrote:

a) sign with the Leafs and continue his injury woes. As a die-hard Leafs fan I just know if he signs with the buds he'll play 20 games and get hurt for the rest of the season; or
b) sign with any other team. As a die-hard Leafs fan, I know that if signs with any other team he'll be 100% healthy for the entire season and get 130 points.
:x :x
The Leafs said they also won't buy out McCabe or Klee. Huh? You could easily buy those two out and pick up two free agent defensemen for around the same price, while also upgrading at the position. Typical Leafs though, they will go out of their way and try to sign Al McInnis. :x :x Christ even Leetch at his age is still an upgrade over Klee or McCabe.

Forsberg- as well as a lot of other high priced players- may meet up with Mr. Reality in the next few weeks. And the meeting won't go well.
It ain't gonna matter how good they still are, nobody is going to be able to afford to pay them anything near what they're hoping to get- or even what they made before the strike.
