What player needs to step up for your team this season?
What player needs to step up for your team this season?
Offense and defense. The guy that needs to emerge or reemerge in order for your team to have a chance this year.
Since it's my thread I'll start.
Offense - Ashley Lelie WR - Has flashed playmaking ability since being picked in the first round a few seasons back but hasn't exactly been a consistent blocker and at times his hands have been suspect. He has reported to camp noticably bulked up and with Rod Smith not getting any younger is primed for a breakout year IMO.
Defense - Trevor Pryce DL - Dude is coming off surgery and to put it mildly the pass rush was nonexistent when he was gone last season. The Broncos made noise about trading him this offseason but he restructured and remains with his rightful team. IMO we are set at linebacker and in the secondary but if the QB has 10 seconds to throw back there even Kerry Collins can find an open receiver. Courtney Brown got hurt once again and is looking to miss a lot of time making the return to health of Pryce even more important.
Thoughts?

This is easy. Very easy. Easiest question we have ever seen.

I could very easily list 4 or 5 guys on each side of the ball, but I'll play along and put up just one name.
Offense: LaMont Jordan
Oakland invested a lot in him, and he is as yet unproven as a "carry-the-load" runner. He gives every indication that he's gonna be up to the task. The Raiders were simply AWFUL running the ball last year. They had no true feature back and their o-line was nowhere near in place. I look for big things from both Jordan and the o-line this season. Gallery and Grove are young, strong, talented and MEAN, and I can see Oakland running straight AT teams a lot this year. Physical beatdowns to set up Moss to the post. LOVIN' EVERY MINUTE OF IT.
Defense: Warren Sapp
Son of Buddy dicked around with the defense like a complete fool last year, and one of his major blunders was playing fat Sapp out of position. Warren had a poor year. His best years are in the rearview mirror, IMO, but he's got to be a factor in the middle of the Raider defense this year in order for the other pieces to also do their thing. He's got pride and I look for him to rebound with a solid campaign in '05.

Offense- Shawn Andrews G- missed the entire 2004 season with a broken leg. He may very well have been rookie of the year based on how he just pulverised anyone in his path.
He is penciled in as a starter and the Super Bowl is won in the trenches and this guy needs to solidy that line since they let Mayberry go.
Defense- Jerimiah Trotter MLB- when he was inserted as the starter mid way into the season, teams stopped running against the Eagles. He's still under 30, looks recovered from that knee injury and with a better D Line he could have a pro-bowl season.

Offense. Julius Jones. If the young man can continue his progress from last year, and become a dominant running back it will take a ton of heat off of Bledsoe. He also needs to establish his pass protection. The cowboys recieving corps, including TE Jason Whitten, are a solid group. Outside of Whitten, there will be no Pro Bowlers here, but they are well above average. If Bledsoe is feeling the heat they'll look like a bunch of chumps. A solid running game is a MUST if the Boys are to have a modicum of success this year.
Defense Izell Reese/Keith Davis. Whoever wins the starting safety spot has got to step up. Specifically on pass coverage. Roy Williams is not a coverage guy. He's best when playing up around the line. One of these guys has to step up. The Cowboys Corners should be close to lock down mode with the addition of Anthony Henry, and Terrence Newman seemingly having a great camp and getting over the Sophmore jinx, and the addition of Aaron Glen. If the secondary plays as expected or better, you can count on this unit being at or near the top of the league. The loss of Darren Woodson, IMO, is the single largest reason this unit went from #1 2 years ago, to 16 last year. If one of these guys steps up as a solid replacement, you'll see them round back up to that elite status.

Bucs
DT - Booger McFarland. He was drafted in the 1st Round 4 years ago and he has yet to put a full season together. he has all the tools in the world and is awesome when healthy, but I have yet seen him take over games like Sapp used to. I hope he can stay healthy so he can clog up the middle and let our LBs run wild.

Tell you what jim, worry about what your own shitbag chokejob of a squad is doing, and shut the fuck up concerning the silver and black.
Dumb Bitch.
While I agree with pop, i'll go in another direction here:
Offense: Kerry Collins. Collins had a tough time adjusting to the new playbook and scheme early last season, but came on strong late after it all clicked. The late season Kerry needs to show up this entire season. He needs to regain his super bowl year form for us to have a legitimate shot at taking it all. It doesnt matter how well Jordan runs-if Kerry falters badly, we are fucked.
Defense: Whomever is lined up opposite of the now fully healthy CWood. Whether its Hill, Aso, Routt, or Washington, they need to be fucking ready to make the correct reads and know when to go for the int, swat down, or sure tackle because they will be getting picked on for a significant portion of the game on passing downs. Too many times we saw PBuch fuck the D over by being a dumbshit and going for the int and getting burned badly over and over again. Whoever mans that island MUST use thier fucking head to make the correct snap decision.

As for the original post- your saying an established run stopper in sapp is more of a concern then an injury prone player in burgess who's eating a lot of your cap for a player who's claim to fame is that he sacked Vick in the playoffs?
Jackass.

I'm not too concerned with the Defense, it looks to be rounding into a formidable group. With the tougher schedule this year I'll be very happy if they finish anywhere close to last year ranking.
The offense was a pleasant surprise last year, and I look for another solid year.
Leaving the special teams....If the special teams can kick it up a notch and win 2-3 games I'm thinking we go a step further in the playoffs.
Nate Kaeding...has been stellar so far in camp. Last years shank vs. the Jets was a bitter pill for all of us. Kaeding took it hard, but is definitely a tough kid and a winner.
Little Darren Sproules could "go all the way" more than once, which would be a huge boost.
Mike Scifres is a hell of punter and with a year under his belt should be among the league leaders.
My choice to step it up and make a difference..."The special teams"

You didnt watch Raider football last season if you think Burgess is someone to include on this list. In fact, you dont watch much fucking football period if you think that.jiminphilly wrote:I don't believe losing the SB to the odds on favorite is considered choking.Raydah James wrote: Tell you what jim, worry about what your own shitbag chokejob of a squad is doing, and shut the fuck up concerning the silver and black.

I'd put Son of fucking buddy on there before i'd throw burgess on it. His fucking scheme will make or break our defense before burgess ever will. Yes, the way burgess performs will make a difference-NO, he doesnt belong within a mile of this list.
Fucking philly faggot ass pussy.
Oakland can "do" without Burgess playing well more-so than they can without Sapp playing well, IMO.
Sapp holding his own (and then some) in the middle will do a LOT to help others around him.
Sapp is paid pretty handsomely too, jimphilly.
Bro' James is right on about whoever is playing the "other" corner for Oakland needing to step it up.
This is also more important than Burgess, IMO.
Burgess kicking ass would be "gravy" ....... so to speak.

Wipe the man goo from your eyes, James and actually read what I posted. All I said was Burgess was a bigger concern then Sapp.
That's it. I don't care what fuckin scheme you run, Burgess is an unproven, injury prone DE who is getting paid a lot of money considering his history.
Nice cap management.

Not a good division to be in with question marks in that department.
23 picks in 2004 is nothing to sneeze at. I'd be happy with that number in 05.
Compare that to the Raiduhs total of 9 (lol) now that's a number to be very concerned about.

Pats
Ok on Offence I have to go with the O line.they need to protect Brady and open holes for Dillon. With out them Brady is toast and the season is ended early.
On defence I have to go with Vince Wilfork. With the loss Of the two Tedys He is going to have to stuff the middle or we could have a long year against the run.
Another key is how well the back ups fair. We need depth at QB and RB to be succuessful.
Peace out Patriots Rule

James do you even watch the Faider games or do you wait until the commentators tell you what to think? Your shit talking is beyond ignorant and with each of your posts the collective IQ of the entire board drops a bit.
STFU and pay attention.
Now here in Socal we are bombarded with Faider games every Sunday in some sort of futile attempt to keep the Mexicans in line for at least one day out of the week. As a result I am stuck watching a lot of Faiders games.
Anybody who knows shit about that team can see that the lack of pass rush is killing the defense on 3rd down.
But not you right?
If Burgess can put up even adequate sack numbers your entire D is likely to change. But then again considering that Alice threw ungodly $ at a player who has had a handfull of productive games in his career it's not likely to happen.
In Philly Burgess had Kearse and Simon to take most of the attention off him and he was an average player at best, now he has nobody of the sort in Chokeland.
What a fucking reach of a signing.
Leave it to a fan of adivision rival to know more about James' team than James herself.
You are a fucking idiot.

I'm totally fucked up right now, so I'll stick to the obvious answers...
OFFENSE
Kyle Boller. With Mason, Heap, Clayton, and Lewis he finally has some talent to play with. Barring injuries to these guys or the line, he has no more time for excuses.
DEFENSE
Ray Lewis. Rex Ryan has changed the defensive scheme in order to free Ray up to make plays like he did in 2000-01. If he can't go like he used to, it might be time to think about another MLB.

OFFENSE:
Carson Palmer, he came on strong late in the season before getting hurt, and with a very
experienced WR corps and Rudi in the backfield, he is the last thing the O needs to take this team
to the next level.
DEFENSE:
this could easily go to any number of DL like JSmith but I'm sticking
with the play of the DT's specifically JThorton. he was brought into Cinci
as a good charachater guy that helped bring the Titans to the SB, but he
has been proven to be too small in the middle when playing the likes of
the power football teams like PITT and Baltimore. and since we advoided
the DT's in the draft like a fucking plague and drafted a DE and a LB both
of which will play LB, DT is the biggest glaring need. plus we need Pollack
to sign his fucking contract and get in camp.
