Friday we go live
This Friday is the day we go live with HS football and I begin my career as a broadcaster. Feel free to find your way to radiosugarland.com and see how we do. We are also broadcasting over FM, but I don't think any of you are close enough to pick it up.
Neither one of us have ever done any broadcasting and neither of us have any radio experience. This Friday we are doing a scrimmage to test the gear and to make sure we can get a signal out over the air.
Any feedback you guys might have would be appreciated. Remember we are not Ron Franklin, but it should be entertaining. We would really like feedback on the sound quality especially in the high end. We are a little worried about splattering around the high end. Oh, and save the comments about how we suck until next week.

Blind,
Still officiating, but am giving up the HS games to concentrate on NCAA. I will be back in the Lone Star Conference this fall and even have one Southland Conference game. I will do the HS games and then fly myself or drive after the game to my college game.
SoCal,
Lamar Consolidated vs Willowridge

Lefty...we each need to come up with a way to include this place in our broadcasts. I was thinking that my first game I'll nickname the offensive line the trolls and when they make a good play I'll rack the trolls. Oh by the way, my first broadcast is of the new school I'm teaching at. How weird. Maybe I'll score some points with the principal......

Take it easy on Angelo St. this year. We are breaking in a new coach. Oh, yeah, good luck.

Radio Sugar Land goes live at 7:15 central time on Friday night.
In Texas we don't play 8 man ball. We either play 11 or 6 man.
As for D-1 talent there will be some in the game for both teams. Willowridge will have quite a few more than Lamar, but both have sent at least one to D-1 each of the last 12 years.

I went to Brazoswood High School which, when I was there, was in Willowridge’s district. At that time, Willowridge was the DOMINANT team in the district and a player in the state tourney. Didn’t Thurman Thomas go to Willowridge?
Anyway, two things I remember most about Willowridge:
1. Their band was quite humorous. As a 90% Black school, you can imagine the “dancing” they did on the field during their halftime show.
2. Their golf team shot 625 (4 man score) in the district tournament. (See #1 for possible reason)

Manley went to Yates. Thurman Thomas is the most notable footballer to come out of Willowridge.m2 wrote:SoCalTrjn wrote:is that 8 man? Ive heard of a few Texas teams but neither of those. Any D1 prospects in the game?left seater wrote:Lamar Consolidated vs Willowridge![]()
No, those are top high schools in the Houston area.. 4A or 5A I think.
I actually think Dexter Manley went to Willowridge.

I cant remember if it was back in 86 or 87 but Willowridge had a letter of intent party where somewhere in the neighborhood of 21 kids signed football scholarships with around 18 going D-1A.
I'm pretty sure Thurman Thomas was one of those that signed. 3 or 4 from that team made it to the NFL for atlease one year.

Look at it this way- their leaving for Norman College increased the average IQ in both states.Vito Corleone wrote:I remember back in the late 80's Sugarland Willowridge produced some serious D1 talent. Too bad most of them ended up at either a$m or blOwU.
OU probably offered them their own 7-11 to rob whenever they felt like it

Your thinking of Dallas Carter of 89. Thats the team that had players knocking off the 7-11 with guys wearing their lettermen's jackets that had their numbers on them.Cuda wrote:Look at it this way- their leaving for Norman College increased the average IQ in both states.Vito Corleone wrote:I remember back in the late 80's Sugarland Willowridge produced some serious D1 talent. If I remember correctly one of the kids was a super blue-chip DB (signed with Tennessee) named evans who got sent to the big house and later had to have surgery to have his asshole repaired. I guess he wasn't as fast as he thought he was, or possibly 40 times don't matter that much in a 10 foot cell.
EDIT: Now that I think of it one of the Willowridge boys was the guy who shot his teammate at OU. Peters I think his name was.

Who, the one you playe on? Yeah-fucking-right. Carter was loaded with D1 talent including a couple of future all-pro's.SoCalTrjn wrote:just saw carter in Friday Night Lights.... I wonder how they feel having a movie make their entire community out to be assholes.
BTW there was a high school team out here that would have kicked the shit out of Permian or Carter in the fall of 89

The whole movie was off putting. Like having Gaines be a likable coach, Boobie hurting himself in a game, playing Carter in the championship, etc. I was a little dissapointed when I heard they were making the movie. The movie couldn't live up to the book because the book was so well done. Plus, there was so much socio-economic background that added to the story that had to be cut out because it wouldn't translate well on the big screen.Believe the Heupel wrote:Nah, no biggie. In the movie, one of the announcers said that Dallas Carter had 11 guys sign D-1 LOIs. Of course, considering that LOI day is in February, I thought that was a little off-putting...
But I thought there was a Carter team sometime in the late 80's or early 90's that put a bunch of guys into D1.

In Friday Night Lights Carter kicked the crap out of Permian. But it wasn't for the state title. The state title was played against Converse Judson a suburb of San Antonio. I had a couple of friends that played on that Judson team.
I have gotten into many a debate about who the greatest modern high school team was in Texas High School Football.
I have contended that I have never seen a team as good as the 1985 Jack Yates Lions. That team dominated every team they played including the state championship game against Permian where they beat them 37-0. That was a mild ass kicking compared to some of the other teams they beat, most were to the tune of 68-0 or 72-0. The only team that came close was Houston Jones high who kept the margin below 20 points both times they played.
That team had some massive talent including Santana Dotson, James Goode, Johnny Bailey, Melvin Foster and about 20-25 other D1-A level talent when you include Juniors.

what was also incorrect on friday Night Lights were all the Visors that the Carter players had on.... this was supposd to be 1988, nobody was wearing visors, especially blue tinted ones, in 1988.
I was talking about the next season though , 1989, when Permian was chosen as National Champions, the team that was in second all year (Permian leaped over them when the 1st place team lost) would have rolled Permian. Permian benefited from the popularity of the book and rode that to the title, the team from Fontana that won it all in 1987 was even better in 1989.
D1 talent doesnt make a great team, Long Beach Poly was full of D1 talent and lost to De La Salle who only had a few kids go D1 a couple years ago

Don't think I am going to catch it lefty, my wife was hospitalized after surgery the other day and we are worried that she is going to have to be opened up again. Even if I am home my daughter has me pretty well monopolized right now as I am sure you can under stand.
Wanted to say good luck though and I am sure someone with as much knowledge ass yourself will do just fine on the air.
