Gameday circle-jerking Charlie Weis/UM-ND: Call it!

Post by Shoalzie »

Where's all the Michigan-Notre Dame smack?

Weis has a big enough ass as it is...the Gameday crew is going to get chapped lips from kissing it. The guy won one game over a team that lost to Ohio yesterday. Not Ohio State, just plain ass Ohio! He's a great coach but let's not go overboard here. Beat a top 5 team in their stadium and then you can start singing the virtues of the guy. Didn't the Ty Willingham regime start off well too? Just sayin'...slow your roll. If the Wolverines humble them today, I wonder how fast these goofs are going to back pedal.

RACK the JLH pic...

The Wolverine offense looks worse than the defense...that doesn't bode well. The defense settled down after the first drive but Walker made some nice plays to get them the second TD. With Hart out of the lineup and Avant only with one catch, no one has really made any plays on offense. It would've helped if they completed a couple of those throws down the field. Henne hasn't played all that bad but they need to come out and start the second half with a TD drive. I'll the Irish some props...solid first half.

He probably wanted to stay with the hot hand in Ecker...Michigan's defense resonded well in getting a quick stop. Gotta get points on this latest trip.

For in spite how poorly the offense has been, the defense has held Notre Dame's offense in check. It's huge they didn't give up another TD when they gave them the short field. The field position battle will be key down the stretch...if Notre Dame can keep Michigan going the length of the field, they should be able to hold on. Henne can't complete anything down field. If you would've told me before the game that Notre Dame would have only 17 points right now, I'd say Michigan's in good shape...didn't expect to see this poorly of a performance. This isn't a great Notre Dame defense...

Carr has a ring, and that takes you far in avoiding abuse. With any luck Solich's 99 team would have won it all and he'd have gotten much more of a pass for his shortcomings. I'm not saying that is right, just commenting on the way it is.

What a gift of a call!

The College fb video review system BLOWS, give coaches 2 challenges like the NFL. Reminds me of 1986-90 when the NFL had the booth calling down all the damn time.

Hey if Henne ever learns to look for his 2nd or 3rd receivers, he may turn into a good quarterback. He really seems to lock on that first guy and goes to him regardless of the coverage.

nice

4th and 15, and they have 2 wr's running 5 yard crossing patterns. And Henne is locked on one of them!

It's a win for the Irish, no matter what. Michigan is a tough place to play and give credit to ND's defense. It seemed like their offense went conservative in the 2nd half or maybe it was the fact that UM's defense played well. Either way, the Irish are 2-0 and have a chance of starting 5-0.

Don't look past Michigan State next week...I can't believe I'm saying that. They'll beat Washington but they'll lose to both Purdue and USC. I still think they go 7-4 or 8-3. It's a nut-grinder of a schedule.

They have a chance of going 5-0. I understand that Greg, but going into the big house isn't an easy task. That's why they haven't won there in several years. This team is much different than the one under TW that started off well. Their defense is playing well and with time the offense will get better because Quinn will get better. Can they lose to MSU and Purdon't? Sure but the more they keep winning the more the confidence builds and the more they believe in themselves and what CW is doing.

What does this start under Weis do to the ND fans' impression of Willingham's tenure? Can you compare the two or is it apples and oranges?

My two cents:

First, on ESPN: I didn't see much of Gameday, so I can't call bullshit on the ass-kissing of Weis, but I'll remind everyone that this is the same outfit that, only a week ago, was predicting an 0-6 start for ND. Why these assclowns get any credibility whatsoever from fans is totally beyond me. It's abundantly clear to me that they fired the wrong person. Bad as Alberts was, both Corso and Herbstreit are a gazillion times worse.

Now, on ND: as Lax has said, a W is a W, and it's difficult to come into Michigan and leave with a W under any circumstances. Having said that, there are a few areas of concern. The offense couldn't generate anything in the second half (the only second-half scoring drive didn't produce a single first down, and benefitted greatly from a decent punt return). Despite a decent completion percentage and two TD passes, Quinn did not have a particularly good game by my standards, as his yards-per-attempt was an anemic 4.67. Walker did get 100 yards, but it was a quiet 100 yards.

The defense did play very well, although they certainly benefitted from what was undoubtedly the worst game of Henne's college career so far. Still, the defense came into this game as the questionable unit, and they showed that they're up to the task of preserving a win against a quality opponent even on a day when the offense isn't firing on all cylinders.

Certainly, this win raises expectations for ND. We still need to get better, of course, and I'm by no way saying that this is a certainty, but I see a 10-1 record and a BCS bid as a distinct possibility. Yes, the schedule is brutal, and I don't think we have the horses to beat USC yet, but I think we are capable of beating both Purdue and Tennessee (imho, UAB exposed Tennessee as a pretender).

It's really apples and oranges. Willingham came over with the reputation of being an offensive guru and didn't have his team score an offensive TD until the 3rd game of the year. He didn't get his 6th offensive TD until the 4th game. Weis came in with the reputation of being an offensive genius and scored the first time ND had the ball, and 6 out of the first 7 times.

The major thing about Willingham was that ND settled for him. They made a run at Gruden that the administration fucked up, and the had egg on their face because of the O'Leary fiasco, so they went with Willingham. Most ND fans were cautiously optimistic at very best. No one was very excited about the hire.

After ND made a run at Meyer and didn't get him, some fans thought they would go down the same road as they did 3 years earlier. This time, the coach that ND had to "settle" for was much better than Willingham, and you knew he was serious about winning by the staff he assembled. Willingham brought his Stanford cronies.

Was Wash/ND scheduled prior to this year or was it scheduled after Weis was hired?

Prior to this year. It's a completion of the home and home that was started last year. The game in which Willingham had his initial conversations about the Washington job.

I'd add to this that ND typically completes its schedules at least 5 years in advance. Sometimes there is some last-minute tinkering, but that's usually limited to dates, not opponents.

I've heard that the NCAA has approved a 12th game beginning next year, so of course, there'll be an exception to that on ND's schedule for the next couple of years. According to the NY Times, we're in negotiations to resume Army on our schedule.
