Bigger accomplishment

Post by Shine »

Was talking with a Domer fan today and got into this hypothetical debate. Figured I'd see what you all thought.

With ND off to a hot start, he's obviously drinking the Charlie Weiss kool aid. I'm Jim Jonesing it myself with Terry Hoeppner at IU. And yes, I'm overlooking the fact they gave up over 400 yards rushing to Nicholls St. They still won the freaking game, something Hoosier football teams typically don't do much of. Anyfuck, here's the debate.

IF in 4 years time the following holds true:

ND is back to being an annual top 10 type team but has not won a national title
AND
IU is an annual 7-4/8-3 type team that makes bowl games year in and year out

I say what Coach Hep would have done at IU is MORE impressive and a bigger accomplishment than what Weiss would have done with ND. IMO, taking a football nothing program into a consistent bowl team in a power conference is a tougher task than returning a traditional power program to prominence.

So, what say you???

With all due respect, making IU into a yearly bowl team would be a significant accomplishment. Factoring in turnstile head coaching, I just don't see it being more likely than bringing ND back to top 10 status.

I'm not saying one is more or less likely to happen than the other. I'm just saying if BOTH did happen, Hep at IU is a bigger accomplishment. I think Weiss is the right hire for ND and will get the job done, but I feel just as strong about Coach Hep at IU. I'm with no exaggeration 100 times more excited about IU football right now than IU basketball, thanks to this man:

Winning at Indiana is definitely more of a struggle. It is hard to assert yourself in a tough conference at a basketball school with no football tradition.

Based on your hypo, Shine, Hoeppner would have done the more incredible job. But when I saw your poll, I was a little misled at first.

Until I read your post, I was thinking that you were polling to see which coach had done the more impressive job so far. In that regard, it's no contest. Beating Pitt and Michigan, both on the road, is far more impressive than wins over Central Michigan and Nicholls State (a Division 1-AA program), even taking into consideration the disparity between ND's football program and IU's.

Hep for sure. If he can get IU to the level that Minnasota is at right now, that is a much bigger feat than getting ND back into the top 10 on a consistent basis.

We're still waiting for your rant in the CBB forum!

Most definitely Hep.

Top 10 success at ND should be as easy as Long Dong Silver’s chances of getting laid.

IU success in football is equivalent to Duke success in football. While a huge accomplishment that would be.........shitaintgonnahappen.

Much as I'd like to agree with this, the realist in me cannot. It's hard for any program to remain in the Top 10 consistently. Oklahoma's been in the last 5 years, but it looks like they won't be able to do it this year. Throw in the fact that Notre Dame consistently plays one of the more demanding schedules in the country, and, well . . .

Certainly luck plays a part in any college football dynasty. And any college football dynasty is fragile -- just one bad recruiting year, or a couple of injuries to key players, and you could lose it.

I used a similar tactic to argue that Bill McCartney was a better coach than Tom Osborne. McCartney took over the biggest patsy in the Big 8 and turned them into a National Champion in less than 10 years. Osborne took over a team that had just won back-to-back MNCs and it took him 25 years to win another one.
