Yea right.

Even though New England coach Bill Belichick chased off Steelers trainer John Norwig from attending to one of his injured players Sunday, it did not prevent the Patriots from later asking the Steelers for crutches and some medication for the player.

Norwig, the Steelers' trainer since 1992, rushed onto the field with Pittsburgh EMS division chief Ron Romano when it was evident that Patriots tackle Matt Light was seriously injured in the second quarter Sunday at Heinz Field. That is normal procedure for the home team in such a situation because Romano would be the first to call for an ambulance if needed.

But when Belichick saw Norwig approach Light, who lay on the grass field, he came out to shoo him away. Belichick told Norwig to "get away from my [expletive] player" according to several sources. A surprised Norwig left and later could be seen talking and laughing about the incident with several Steelers doctors on the sideline.

Romano said he often has gone onto the field when a player looks seriously hurt. He said he got there after Belichick spoke with Norwig and did not hear the conversation.

"We're there to help the teams and assist in any way we can," Romano said. "I have an ambulance in place to take a player off right away."

Earlier in the game, Patriots safety Rodney Harrison also went down with what the Boston Globe reported as a torn right ACL. Steelers coach Bill Cowher walked onto the field to check on Harrison, which he has done occasionally when an opposing player is seriously injured. Belichick did not try to chase away Cowher.

Yesterday, the Steelers declined comment on the incident through a spokesman and the Patriots also had no comment. The topic did not come up at Belichick's news conference yesterday.

Sources told the Post-Gazette that the requested crutches and the pain medication were provided by the Steelers to the Patriots for Light, whom they said had a broken leg.

"We were later on asked to come to the room and provide treatment for the player, which we did," Romano said.

From what I've heard, Belichick has always been really funny about handling his players injuries. Wasn't it he who was penalized for not correctly reporting his injured players status to the league a few years ago? I believe that is what has lead Tony Dungy to now report anyone of the Colts who might have a hangnail as "Probable" or "Questionable" on the league's injury status report.

But that incedent does show a lack of judgement. Has he come out and told people to "Get away from my (expletive) clock operator!" yet?

Well since it was Heinz fields clock operator no he hasn't.

Belichick has always been funny about injuries. He won't release any info until he has to on Wednesday of each week and then at that it is as vauge as it has to be to please the league. Most coaches are like that. Maybe he has had a problem at this field in the past or even with this specific guy. Who knows. I do agree he could have handled it better however.....

Not exactly. The clock operator is hired by the NFL.

The 52 seconds was mistakenly added to the game clock by a press box clock operator who was filling in for Lou Rossi, who was sick Sunday. The Steelers and the NFL refused to identify the clock operator, who is hired by the league. ESPN identified him as Leo Pularski.

I'll agree that most coaches are as vague with their injury reports as they can be. But what Belichick exhibited on Sunday was an Al Davis level of hyperparanoia. We're not talking about just anybody running on the field, we're talking about trained and uniformed EMS personel and the Steelers trainer. At least be classy enough to say thanks but no thanks.

I agreed. I think he definently could have handled it better. I think that this matchup has grown to a good rivalry and maybe that factored in. Im pretty sure that most teams travel their own medical staffs to away games so they are there if anything happens. Agree he could have shown a little more decorum though......

Original article I read said it was the Steelers clock operator. If not then it's the NFL's issue. Not at Gillette then not a worry for me.....

The president of the pro football athletic trainers society expressed surprise yesterday that any NFL coach would rudely chase off a trainer offering aid to a seriously injured player on a football field.

"It's a common courtesy for the home team," said Steve Antonopulous, the trainer for the Denver Broncos who heads the NFL group.

Steelers trainer John Norwig came onto the field to offer his help Sunday when Patriots tackle Matt Light was seriously injured in the second quarter at Heinz Field. New England coach Bill Belichick went up to Norwig and rudely told him to leave, using a profanity.

"I really don't know the full extent of everything," Antonopulous said, "but I'm surprised if it occurred to any of our athletic trainers in our organization."

Antonopulous said the home trainer meets with the visiting trainer before games to determine logistics and other matters -- where the X-ray room is, where the paramedics are located on the field, ambulances, etc.

"If a player goes down on the field and is there for a little bit or has a recognizable serious injury, the home trainer will go to that area of the field to offer his assistance," Antonopulous said. "That's a common courtesy. That's something each of us does. It helps the situation as it is on the field to expedite the medical care of the individual -- expedites getting the cart on the field, paramedics if needed, if they need to be transported off the field."

Antonopulous said he has been in the business for 30 years and never experienced anything like Norwig faced from Belichick.

"No, sir, it's actually opposite of that," he said, noting the opposing coach appreciates the medical aid.
