Bo Pelini?

Post by T REX »

I do not know enough about this guy. Is he a good coach? Seems USC used his defense and then he gave up a ton of points to ASU then a second half collapse vs Tenn.

Again, I do not know enough.....OU fans or Nebraska fans?????

Pelini's NU D never played a team/qb that could throw the ball effectively down the field. they stacked the line and beat up on big XII north teams.

edit: and this has nothing to do with Pelini's gig at OU. it's just the way it was that year.

Crimson you obviously didn't watch us much. Our bread-and-butter was pass-d, very well-executed zone to be exact. If anything was our problem it was teams that with big running attacks and fast qb's were able to bust-us-up, especially after our O sputtered and left the D on the field too long. We ate-up dropback guys though(OSU and MSU guys looked utterly inept) and overall our D leapfrogged like 45 spots from the previous year.

As far as his tenure at OU goes I could certainly question him as a db-coach(lb's great but no for db's) but Venables has to take more blame for that defense since he was senior-DC and had ultimate authority. Hell OU's D is still struggling to return to form.

In terms of last night, both LSU's O and D went to sleep after they got a nice lead. Yes the second half sucked but overall 24 points in regulation vs Tenn isn't bad especially when you consider that LSU's D scored a td(net 17) and LSU's O basically gave Tenn a td when a pick was returned all the way to the 2. Also, on Tenn's scoring drive in OT the refs missed a mugging that the announcers and coaches went nuts over that should have pushed the ball way back. Bo certainly didn't have a great game but putting all the blame on him is bullshit.

Two words...Demorrio Williams, Pelini made a living off his speed from the edge.

Watching the LSU game it was obvious Pelini was blitzing 70% of the time or more, and Tennessee finally decided to run draws and quick sideline fades and the crossing routes where the LB's weren't. Their big recievers took over and Clausen was on.

I think LSU (Pelini) made a huge mistake in too much attacking the QB. (Pelini doesn't have a Demorrio) Clausen was un-loading at the right times and he knew the pressure was coming. (But never fast enough) You gotta make him wonder....
Plus LSU was GASSED and they should have substituted more in the 3rd quarter when Tennessee was taking over. By the 4th they weren't coming close to Clausen and Riggs was gashing them. Tennessee's O-line was picking up everything Pelini was throwing at them.

IMO, Pelini is a good coach if he has players that trust and love him. He replaced a coach that everyone hated when he came to NU and the players immediately bought into his system and rallied around it. It wasn't a perfect system, but he had solid play from his linebackers and defensive backs that were the strengths of his team. Every game they lost that year was to a team that had a running QB coupled with a strong running attack.

I also attribute his success at NU that year to the DB work of Marvin Sanders, whom all of the DBs loved like a father.

So Yes, he's a good coach, but I think chemistry between his players and his coaches are very key for his success. It must have been lacking when he was at OU.

Bo Pellini took five future and current NFL players and made them look like a bunch of one star recruits fresh out of high school at OU.

That pretty much sums it up.

Coach Cosgrove here took practically the same defense that Pelini had minus Demario Williams and turned the once formidable secondary into a laughing stock. This year, he's being called a genius for playing to the team's strength. It all depends on what they've done for you lately I guess.

Like I said I seriously question Bo as a db-coach, he was a lb-coach for Green Bay, but I wouldn't hire him to coach db's either. But your D is still struggling with him gone. I'd say more goes on Venables's shoulders.

Neb and OU fans have had much different experiences with Bo, I guess LSU will be the tie-breaker. But that judgment, like with the rest of LSU's staff will have to wait a while. This could be an "adjustment year".

The real problem with Nebraska's defense was a lack of talent. This is still the problem today. I think their new coach is starting to fix this problem but Pelini took the blame for turning the black shirts into pink shirts.

As for his lack of defense at OU I also would give him an incomplete because IMO he didn't have enough of a chance to get his system fully integrated.

WTF: Do NOT speak unless you have a clue.
Nebraska sent the following players from Palini's starting D from 2 years ago.
D. Williams (4.rd)
J. Lord (6.rd)
R. Bingham (7.rd)
T. Johnson (7.rd)
T. J. Hollowell (FA)
P. Kabongo (FA)
J. Pippens (FA)
J. Bullocks (2.rd)
B. Ruud (2.rd)
F. Washingston (1.rd)

Thats 10 players from his D two years ago.
As for your mention of the Pink shirts (this sucked LAST YEAR) that was NOT under Palini.
Under Palini the Neb D was one of the top Passing units in the nation and there over all D was pretty damned good.

Again, if you doing have a clue what you are talking about, it is best to say nothing.

The 03 Husker D gave up
14.5 points per game
119 rushing per game
177 passing per game

1st team all american Safty
Honorable Mention all american LB
8 starters on D (honorable mention all conference or better)

Don't get me wrong, I am not in love with Palini and never wanted him as head coach (I wanted the OC from K.C., DC from T.B. or Wisc's HC)
But dude did a very good job at Nebraska, which is why he got a shot at schools like OU and LSU.

The next question is about WHAT.
Big 12..........UM, no.
Huskers..............NOPE, not for at least two more years.
Maybe I will just slam the Big 10, that one always works.

Huskers front 7 is real deal

Callahan's smartest move since taking over is scrapping the 2 TE sets since they are not relevant without Herian

Victory over Taco Tech looking very possible after weak showing vs. KU
