PSU vs. OSU
Let's get this one started early.
I'll be in Buffalo for my cousin's wedding. The groom was an O Lineman for UB, and briefly was recruited by Joe Paterno...so we'll have the OK to slip out of the reception to viddy the game.
Obviously, I'm bouyed by the win over Minny. This might be a darn good football game...ABC prime time, under the lights at the Beav.

one would think it ought to be a pretty low scoring affair--which is not bad for a home team/underdawg.

Wheree PSU will have to improve to win:
1. MRob's accuracy- He can't miss the easy completions like he's prone to do. If the TE's open, hit him between the numbers w/the ball, dammit. To get by PSU, MRob will have to make these completions.
2. Special teams- Still don't understand why PSU Joe won't get a ST coach. Completely puzzles me. Minnie ripped of two big returns, one of which eventually resulted in a TD. OSU won't have to wait for them to capitalize and score an eventual TD.... Ginn will take it to the house right off the bat.
3. Gameplanning- While the PSU staff did a great job on Saturday, they'll need to find a way to eek out one more level of gameplanning. Yes, the QB draw worked quite well against Minnie, but it won't be as effective against OSU. Same w/the reverses. Gotta find ways to capitlaize on PSU's past ability to succuessfully run these plays. What I'd like to see... MRob in shotgun, takes the snap, fakes the QB draw to suck some defenders up, takes a step back and hit someone deep or behind the LB's.
4. Anwar Phillips- The weak link of the defense. Limit the # of times he gets burned, I guess.

This is a trap game if I've ever seen one. I'd love for a minute to believe that OSU will get a quick start and take the crowd out early. But it's not gonna happen. This one will be called close to the sweater vest, which scares the fuck out of me.

Penn State looked very solid against Minnesota. Ohio State has always struggled in Happy Valley.... and this is the first time we've ever played them at night. All signs point to a PSU massacre.
I don't even want to go to this game because I'd fear for my life. It's been a good six years since the Nittany Nation has tasted this kind of success. This is the game that could put them back on the map.... kinda like Alabama's ass-raping of Florida.
I don't think America understands how intense this game will be.
Ginn returns 3 punts for TDs and Ohio State wins 21-20.

Wow, I see a lot of hype for Ginn when he hasn't done anything all year.
I don't think PSU's Offense will see a drastic reduction in opportunities with OSU's D. As noted, I think they will have to be perfect.
The real test comes down to a sputtering OSU offense vs. what looks to be a pretty solid PSU D.
Still, I think OSU will win 27-13.

A 5-0 start will get you a lot of things in the world of college football.
After the best start since 1999, No. 16 Penn State will host ESPN's weekly college football preview show, ESPN College GameDay. Each week, the program begins at 10:30 a.m.
"We try to go to the most intriguing match-up of the week," Associate Manager for ESPN Communications Mac Nwulu said. "Penn State is a big story line in college football right now."
Nwulu didn't think that a visit to central Pennsylvania would've been likely at the beginning of the season.
"We always try to find a new site or a site we haven't been to in a while," he said.
College football analysts Chris Fowler, Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit -- the usual GameDay jockeys -- should roll into State College on Friday.
Nwulu said GameDay will tape analysis for a portion of ESPN's SportsCenter the night before the Nittany Lions kickoff against No. 6 Ohio State. He also indicated that Friday night's taping will take place around 5 p.m.
Penn State Sports Information Director Jeff Nelson said he hadn't been contacted regarding the show.
"I hadn't heard that," Nelson said. "There's really nothing for me to say until I get verification from the producer."
Herbstreit, a former quarterback at Ohio State, and Corso, a former head coach at Indiana, are not particularly popular among Big Ten crowds.
"Can I kick him in the balls?" Elizabeth Whipple (senior-kinesiology) said about Corso. "Whatever team he used to coach, we used to beat them all the time."
The Lions are 10-0 against the Hoosiers. Corso never coached against the Lions while at Indiana, but he battled Lions coach Joe Paterno when Corso was the quarterback's coach at Maryland.
Not all students were criticizing Corso and Herbstreit.
"I'm stoked," Andrew Gorman (senior-political science) said.
Gorman added that he would be posting the information on FightOnState.com immediately.
"It should be interesting to see what goes on," Martin Shelton (senior-journalism) said. "But I'm going to be pretty hyped for the game."
Collegian writers Sirage Yassin and Justin Kunkel contributed to this report.

Well, the gamefog is settling in.
There's no doubt that this is the biggest PSU game since 2002 Nebraska. The buildup in State College has been fearsome - all wheels are being commandeered for bandwagon-hitching. Cold Pizza has aired with a Paterno child talking shit; Gameday will be from the Jordan Center tomorrow morning...the lifesize cutout JoePas are getting soggy with sweat and a chilling rain.
I feel fairly confident that this will be a close game. Both defenses are at least very good. Both offenses have recently shown some newfangled strength.
OSU needs to pressure Robinson into making mistakes. The OSU DBs need to hold firm against Williams, Butler, and King, so that they can stack against the run.
PSU needs to shore up their shaky special teams play, get the ball into the hands of the talented WRs, and Robinson needs to be careful with the football. PSU will definitely try to go deep.
PSU gets a bump because of the setting, the probable ferocity of the crowd, and the fact that this is OSU's first road game.
OSU gets a bump due to the fact that PSU's RT has blown out his knee, and someone really green has to take his place. Also, Paul Cronin, PSU's placekick holder, turned himself into a drunktank denizen and is suspended indefinitely - a bad thing in a game which will surely see the need for reliable kicking.
I'm a little giddy, so I'll pick PSU to win a close one.

Re: PSU vs. OSU
If he was recruited by Penn State, how on earth did he wind up at UB? Imho, UB is the absolute worst program in Division 1-A. And the company line that "we're struggling because we're new to Division 1-A" is beginning to sound a little tired. There are plenty of programs which began playing at the Division 1-A level more recently than UB and which have had far more success at the 1-A level than UB has had.PSUFAN wrote:The groom was an O Lineman for UB, and briefly was recruited by Joe Paterno...
Oh, and btw, I think this is the week Penn State falls from the ranks of the unbeatens (sorry). Ohio State just has too much talent. Then again, I said the same thing about Penn State last week, so who knows?

With all the hype over PSU this week, I'm starting to worry less and less. Once I hear Beano's official predicition, I think I'll be even less worried. I change my original forecast; OSU covers the spread.

I really don't see PSU's offense doing anything against the Buckeye D. Furthermore, I think all the pub for PSU will go to their heads. It is a good story that they are 5-0 and undefeated at this point, but they are still Penn State. It will take a lot more wins to convince me that this team is any different than the teams from the past 5 years.

Too much hype about PSU "being back". Not saying they aren't much improved this year, but they're not in tO$U's league.

"Our staff is going to ensure that anyone who attends this University and wears the Indiana uniform will make this privilege among their highest priorities and not treat the opportunity as an entitlement,'' Crean said in a statement. "We fully expect our student-athletes to accept the responsibilities academically, athletically and socially that come with representing one of the top programs in college basketball history."
I never really spelunked the caverns of truth for this one...it's just what he always said.If he was recruited by Penn State, how on earth did he wind up at UB?
I can't blame anyone for waiting for the other shoe to fall with PSU. They showed me a lot against Minny. Sure, OSU is different...but we'll see.
