Screw Mikey! Mikey would probably be the guy that would call you up after your Mom died and say, "Dude, I know that I didn't know your Mom, but I bet you're gonna cry now! Gotta a shower rod for you!"

By the way, the whole shower rod thing is pretty stupid to me. Everytime I see someone make that reference to mock someone whose team has lost, I keep thinking, "There's no way that a shower rod would be tall enough or strong enough for the average person to hang from."

Now, maybe if you hung yourself from a ceiling fan that might do it. You could possibly do it from strong hook that's been drilled into a wall stud, but that would be almost too much effort. Maybe one doesn't need to hang themselves. Wouldn't going into the garage and sucking exhaust fumes work? Why don't you just come out and show a picture of a gun? Now that would definitely work."

That's kind of the point of the whole joke/reference. If a shower rod were, in fact, sturdy enough to hold the lifeless corpse of a distraught Nebraska fan, then there wouldn't be the proverbial run on them at Shopko or Pamida or wherever the hell you buy shower rods in Nebraska. Do they sell shower rods at TSC?

Anyway, to spell it out for you, the premise is that a bunch of bummed out fans of Team X tried to hang themselves from their shower rods following a devastating loss. Of course the shower rods didn't hold. They're made of aluminum and plastic. So all those idiot Team X fans who can't even kill themselves properly now have to go to the local Wal-Mart (or TSC, in this case) to buy new shower rods. The joke isn't "ha ha, your team lost, now go kill yourself." It's "ha ha, your team lost, and when you tried to kill yourself, you failed as miserably as your sorry-ass team did on the football field, so go buy a new shower rod, loser."

Even when they're successful they've always been underdogs. The best times were 1970 and 1971, when I was in HS and used to walk up and down the stadium steps selling canned sodas. We beat Ohio State (with Jim Plunket and Randy Vataha) and Michigan in consecutive Rose Bowls, and the band was at its iconoclastic peak. When SC came into town John McKay proclaimed Stanford fans "the worst in the Pac 8".

Now that was something to be proud of.

No need for the shower rod neck stretch..Both teams played a damned great game...Tech showed balls of US Steel to take the game like they did.They deserved the win. The Huskers have won two outta three cliffhangers and they're playing way past expectations. No complaints here...
