That first period was ugly for Kiprusoff. The Wings are definitely a team that will kill you if you take a lot of penalties against them.

A small grain of revenge, but the real games are in 6 months. Let this game put to rest all the "Flames are built for the new rules, Flames are the team to beat' crap. Last year was what, 'The Red Mile Miracle'.

Websters defines a 'miracle' as........... well, you get the idea. Wings look as good as expected, Flames, look like they're believing their own hype.

The Flames aren't as bad as they played today but they could be a bit overrated based on predictions from some of the talking heads. If they can get some offense out of guys like Amonte and they've got a very solid defense...I don't see why they won't win the Northwest Division. Kiprusoff was hung out to dry. The Wings look like tremendous when teams aren't hooking and holding them. We'll see if this type of hockey holds up for the season. If so, the Wings will thrive. They aren't a very physical team but they've got guys who can handle the puck, skate and play both ends of the ice. It's not quite the '97 and '98 team but they're pretty darn good though. I'm looking forward to that game tomorrow night against Vancouver.

I will admit my biases up front. I am a Flames hater. However I don't see why people are picking Calgary to win the Divison/Conference/Cup this year. Sure they added some players but they we're a playoff team by only 4 points last year, and they road Iggy, and Kipper to the finals. If not for some timely goals by Gelinas they would have been defeated to the Bertuzziless Canucks.

Just add Calgary to the list of Washington (98),Buffalo (99), Carolina (02) and Anaheim (03)... I think that they may make the playoffs, but I can't see them getting lucky again.

Well, because of my "vast importance" in the world not involving NHL hockey, I was unable to pay attention to this game, so I really can't comment on what happened.

Anyway, I seem to recall the 2003-2004 season beginning roughly for the Flames, with one of the early season losses a shellacking at home to the Red Wings. We all know who got the last laugh that year. I'm not going to get all worked up over one loss on the road.

I also doubt the Flames will win the NW. They're just not consistent enough. They'll make the playoffs, and after that, I give them a chance to accomplish just about anything... just like every other team that makes the playoffs.

The thing people seem to be missing is that there isn't that much separating the playoff teams these days. Any team can advance in any round. People pick the Flames to do well because they have already shown that they are a team built to win playoff series'.

Even you haters admit they will make the playoffs. It's not that far-fetched that they could win the Cup. But I admit that a lot has to go right for them for that to happen, just as for any other team that has Stanley Cup aspirations.

Whoa there...

Just wanter to clarify that this hater thought that they may make the playoffs, not will make the playoffs.

However, I'd like to RACK JD for being a true Flames fan (pre-2004). He, one of the handful of people in this city who didn't have unrealistic expectations going into the year, and he's not one of these meatheads calling in to calgary sports radio after the game one loss full of doom and gloom.

You've heard wrong. He's been the same guy as ever. The team in front of them is playing uninspired, effortless hockey. Almost as though they're starting to believe their hype.

Besides, Kiprusoff has never been a spectacular goalie that carries the Flames. He relies on solid positioning and the defense clearing rebounds. The latter part isn't happening.

Dude can fly, and he's a solid positional player, and he'll score exactly 10 goals this year.

As for the Flames, they're now 1-3, and been whipped in all three losses. Not looking good for the old bandwagon. Hopefully folks'll stay on it long enough to at least see the Western Conference Championship banner get raised Thursday night.

Rack the Avalanche!

Being the ONLY Avs fan here ( :roll: ) I gotta say we're looking great early on. Our only loss has been to Edmonton and even that game the Avs looked sharp. Aebi was making the saves, we just came up short.

I'm actually impressed with our backup goalie, Budaj, who played Saturday night @ Dallas. Looks like when/if Aebi is out, I'll actually feel good about the game when Budaj is in net.

Marek Svatos is on fire!!! The rookie with the hat-trick and a guy who is going to be the next Peter Forsberg (yes, I know, that's a stretch). He may as well just take over for Joe Sakic because that guy hasn't really done anything all season. Could retirement for Super Joe be in the near future? That wouldn't surprise me one bit.

Flame fan, what was up with your team? Looks like they all were just standing around, despite having several 5-3 PP's, and Kiprusoff looked very weak tonight. It's still early and I wouldn't be throwing the word "playoffs" around right now if I were you.

Judging by the sellout crowd at Pepsi Center (and other arenas), it looks like people have completely forgotten the lockout and just wanted to see their team play. I'll hopefully be one of them soon!

The Flames are scaring me. I almost turned off the game after the Avs' 5th goal, it was getting to be too much to take.

I'm hoping they haven't given up on Sutter's system already, but I can't explain why else they would look so lifeless. Maybe these beatings will make them realize they're not the golden boys they've been made out to be and they'll get back to outworking their opponents.

A little early to not be thinking playoffs. That is the goal.

Well, they say adversity makes teams stronger. I'd have to look pretty far back in the record books to find a road trip this brutal, I think. Blown out three times, and MAN, Columbus must suck to get beaten by this team of effortless nancies.

Bryan Marchment is a Flame.

Looks like I'm not the only one that sees Ference and Montador struggling to keep pucks out of their own net. Mr. Sutter went out and got someone he trusts; Sutter has had Marchment in San Jose and Chicago.

I heard about this deal being worked out last week after he got home from the hospital.

Seriously... he's a good guy and an excellent pickup for the Flames.

I know it's really about how he performs on the ice that matters but I've seen how much he does off the ice for good causes that goes largely unnoticed. Like I said... he's a good guy who in training camp was argueably the Leafs 3rd best defencman behind only McCabe and Kaberle.

He wanted to finish his career off playing here in front of family and friends and truth be told, would have retired if not for the phone call he got from Sutter. His friendship and respect for his old coach (in Chicago and San Jose) was what made signing with the Flames a no brainer.
Anyone else and he would have retired.
