Are you kidding me?

Post by Jimmy Medalions »

Can’t even believe that fucking game. Still can’t. Will go down in history as one of the better ones of all time, I’m sure. Can’t say enough about Notre Dame, their players, their fans and their coaching staff.

Got to campus three hours before kickoff and continued to get our drink on. Then it was time to get some food and take care of some business.

We rolled from the south parking lot, and made a brief stop in front of the engineering building (I believe). It is worth noting that in the engineering building at Notre Dame, they have exceptional shitting facilities. Each of the guys in our group agreed. There is something about leaving skid marks in an opponents bathroom that captures the essence of rivalry college football. Just sayin.

From there we hit one of the many stands on campus where they were making burgers, dogs and brats. Just as we paid, ND’s players were coming at us in their suits and ties. We put all of our stuff down and clapped as they walked by. I wished many of them good luck and their players thanked me. One guy even tugged on my shirt and, with a smile, said “take that shit off”. Right on.

After grubbing and a few more beers we went to see the Dome. Then the Lake. Then the Grotto. Then the Church. Sacred ground, peeps. For those who’ve been, it’s a special place and can’t be over-sold.

Now to the game.

Wow. Reggie Fucking Bush. Brady Fucking Quinn. Pete Fucking Carroll. Charlie Fucking Weis. And, finally, Matt Fucking Leinart.

Since the expansion that building has become considerably louder. Their student section was filled with kids in gold shirts, and when the Green Jerseys came out of the tunnel you couldn’t hear yourself think. Epic. All over the student section you saw kids doing pushups, held up by their friends. ALL OVER THE SECTION. Probably 300 kids doing pushups at the same time.

The field was a cow pasture, and some people want to make it an issue. It isn’t. It was coaching by ND and it was perfectly legal. Those who blame injuries on the grass may have a point, it was long and unforgiving if you had long cleats on, but it’s not ND’s fault that one of our guys got hurt. I think ND lost three players that day. It’s football.

It was an incredible game. Reggie with three TD’s and Brady running an offense that couldn’t be stopped. Our DB’s will need counseling after the systematic dismantling they gave us. A brilliant scheme by Weis. Are you kidding me, 39 minutes in time of possession?

I will be honest, it wasn’t until that 4th and 9, with less than two minutes to go, that I figured the game was lost. The noise had been a HUGE factor all day for the offense. Every time Leinart audibled in the game, our players looked confused. Seriously confused. And so, on 4th and 9, I see Leinart audible and:

Three step drop, fade pass, and:
Jimmy Medalions wrote:FUCK.
Somehow, Jarrett catches the ball on his hip in mid-stride, with only one working eye (lacerated cornea, was seeing double on the sidelines earlier), and goes 60 yards.
Jimmy Medalions wrote:HOLY FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I look at the clock, see Leinart running down the field telling his guys to get to the line, and the confidence I’d lost a play ago was back. It felt right. It felt like we were going to do the unthinkable.

The coaches decide to put the ball in the hands of their best player, Reggie, who takes it inside the three for a first down. Then Leinart tries to boot it into the end zone and gets the ball dislodged. Right there, a head’s up play backfired on the ND player. Dude lead with his hat to knock the ball out…the way they’re coached to, and the ball goes out of bounds. Are you. Fucking. Kidding. Me.

Meanwhile, the clock in the stadium has gone to 0:00. Fans have gone nuclear and are streaming onto the field. And I see what Weis sees. Three refs having a conversation- most of the stadium didn’t see the fumble, they only saw Leinart get DRILLED and the clock expire.

So when we line up for the final play, it was sickening. Loud. Shaking. He’s stopped. No, he’s spinning and he’s…………IN.

Notre Dame has been down but that’s going to change. And very soon. That was one of the most well-prepared teams I’ve seen. They had our number and were literally seven seconds away from beating us.

Their fans were all class, which is to be expected. They are also knowledgeable, also to be expected. See a game in South Bend and you will be impressed by their people. In the parking lot they were friendly and fired up.

Killian, I thought about you at the end of this game. I wouldn’t want to be in your shoes and lose a game like this, this way.

Oh, and Weis rolled into the USC locker room after the game, and said he wished us well the rest of the way, and to run the table.

Rack that guy. Dude is class.

After the comment he made about owning Pete Carroll in the NFL, that's the least he could've done.

Good read. I always enjoy those roadie re-caps.

FYI, some can't miss must see its if you attend a game at FSU.
1. The BP station across the street from Doak. They sell cold singles.

Jimmy,

I'm glad you had such a wonderful trip. Notre Dame is a special place and many don't get that until they attend a game. From the parking attendants who greet you with "Welcome to Notre Dame" to the walk by the team to the game itself, and that's not even taking into consideration the grotto, the campus, etc.

As for the game, I was at a wedding for the entire 4th quarter so I was getting text message updates from my buddy. It's a strange feeling looking at your cell phone seeing "31-28 nd, 4th 9 usc ball 1:10 to go" and then an instant later seeing "60 yd bomb". Talk about feeling like you were kicked in the nuts. I'm sure the reception didn't really appreciate me screaming "FUCK" after I got the message "td usc wins". To all those that gave me a dirty look, eat my ass.

A few buddies and I are already thinking about a roadie to 'SC next year. What a great fucking game. Like vito said in another post, I thank God for unanswered prayers. Charlie Weis is going to be awesome.

Rack Meds and rack that game!

Reminds me of my trip to Tuscaloosa in 2003. Not quite as large a stage but a great game/atmosphere nonetheless. Alabama fans are nails - just like Domers. There is nothing like roadies to schools with great football traditions.

That was by far the best road game I have been to. The only thing I paid for was my hotel room, tickets, and gas on the short trip to Tuscaloosa. The Bama fans paid for parking and got me loaded before and after the game.

Hope I don't offend the Shoalin Temple on this one, Killian, but WHO the FUCK do these people getting married think they are???

I don't know about you guys, but personally I am so fucking tired of people scheduling shit on the most important days of my life. I had to miss the entire first half of OSU/MSU because somebody insisted I attend their stupid fucking graduation.

Which, BTW, I left prematurely. A buddy of mine was calling me, giving me updates. So I couldn't fucking take it anymore. I grabbed a program (my evidence that I attended) and fucking bolted.

"Fuck this," I told myself.

Shit short of my wife or daughter dying I don't miss football season damn it. As far as wedding and such I tell my friends honestly that I don't do Saturdays.

It was a buddy that I've know since kindergarden and I still play softball with. He told me what day it was and I told him that he was shit out of luck because it was ND/USC. This was back in the summer and he went on and on about how ND sucked, etc. I told him it was his fault that he was having the wedding on a Saturday, not mine.

Well, I went because he still is a close friend, but I told my close friends that from now on, if they schedule a wedding in the fall and want me to be a part of it, they better take a look at ND's schedule. Shitty team, I'll probably be there. Good team, fuck off.

I don't miss ND on Saturdays, unless I'm dead or dying.

Last year my 40th birthday fell on the Tennessee game. My wife and kids wanted to take me out for dinner. I insisted that we listen to the game on the car radio, and at the restaurant I made sure I had a seat facing the TV screen.

Jimmah, now that you went through the whole ordeal would it be asking too much to get you to do an updated pics/captions thread, like the smack one you did before the game?

One thing about gamedays always bothered me, at least as a student.

Every Saturday morning, right around 7:30, you could count on being rudely awakened from your alcohol-induced slumber by some pounding on your dorm room door, followed immediately thereafter by said door being opened and some alum wearing the stereotypical Godawful-ugly green plaid pants, with his whole family, including underage (as in about 10 years old, or so) daughters in tow, saying, "This is the dorm room I lived in way back in 1958."

Uggggghhhhhh!!!!! Go away, at least until it's a little closer to kickoff time.

Great pics.

My cousin was in the middle of the student section. He said it was the greatest college football game he's ever been at...and he was the punter for Idaho for 4 years.

I'll have to drive on up to South Bend sometime for a game.

Not ragging on Idaho, mind you, but I don't think the atmosphere surrounding one of their games is anywhere near on par with the atmosphere at a ND game.

Btw, did you just out your Zyclone troll?
