Fine ball player you got there, Trixy. I'm sure his blockers up front appreicated the callout in the national media and will try harder.

the truth
Actual translation, Chris Leak is not an option QB and Meyer should scrap those plays until after this year when Leak goes pro. We haven't seen if Meyer's offense can work against the SEC because he doesn't have a QB who can run it right now. That's not his fault. What is his fault, is that he hasn't tailored his system to fit Leak's strengths.

No big deal. The OL will take care of this sometime in the next game. One of them will trip or miss his reach block and Leak will just get blown up. Back in the huddle one of the guys will say something along the lines of shut your mouth and that will be it.

The only one who gets it.
Vittles: You do know that you run a variation of the spread otpion with Young, right? Also, its the first year implementing the offense.
Here:
GAINESVILLE - -- With fans howling about a pitiful offense, the first-year coaching staff huddled in October and discussed potential changes.
Meanwhile, the players tried to stay nice.
"I have no idea what the problem is," the tight end said. "I'm lost for words."
"We have a good plan but no execution," a receiver said.
"I don't really know what to say because I don't want to say anything critical," the freshman tailback said.
Think those quotes came after the University of Florida's offensive abomination at LSU last weekend? They didn't.
Gotta love it...............
The players' voices belong to tight end Alex Holmes, receiver Devin Pitts and tailback Darryl Poston. The quotes came from a Los Angeles Daily News story that appeared Oct. 5, 2001. The huddling first-year coaches included Pete Carroll and offensive coordinator Norm Chow, who had come to Southern California that season to resurrect a once-proud program.
At the time, the Trojans were 1-3 and the fan base believed Chow couldn't call his way out of a wet paper bag. Sound familiar?
Seriously, I have patience with Meyer that he will get it done. it's the SEC and everywhere he's been it takes at least a year for the players to grasp teh offense. I agree with Killian that Leak's drop back passing isn't being utilized. How can it? Our o-line has sucked beyond belief. It will get better.

I think part of the oline's problem is that there is a difference on who is calling the line protections this year as opposed to last season. I can't remember if Leak made the calls last year, and the center is making them this year, or vice versa. But I would suspect that is part of the problem.
As far as weather this offense will succeed against the SEC, I still have my doubts, but we will know in a year at the earliest, but more than likely 2 years after Portis is the starter with some experience.

Where did you hear the Leak was making line calls? I can't imagine a QB ever making line calls above the Jr High level. Way to much going on for him to make the line calls at the college level.

BtH, in order for that to work the line play has to be so simplified that they don't change anything as changes happen on the d-line. What happens if the D-line shifts prior to the snap and Bomar is changing the play? Does he then change the line call as he is taking the snap?
Having played as an honorary member of the O-Line (TE) I just don't see how you can do anything but straight ahead or zone blocking if the QB is making the calls.

While Leak did say that about the line he had also previously admitted to the media that he was struggling with this new offense. It was all over the radio last Saturday. I thought he would be a better fit for this offense than he is, he is not the true "dual threat" qb like Smith or Jacobs that system needs.
I disagree with the view that this is a gimmick offense, it is just a hybrid of spread and option offenses that have been around for a while. It will take longer to get off the ground against SEC-level defenses but it will work.
You gonna bark all day little doggie or are you gonna bite?
Believe the Heupel wrote:Spread offenses have been successful in the SEC before. Alabama won an SEC title in 2000(?) running a spread with Shaun Alexander at tailback. Kentucky used to roll up a ton of yards with their spread offense.
Keep in mind that the Spread can be defended by quality DC's and there are a couple in the SEC that fit the bill. When OU came out with their spread in 2k no one in the Big 12 knew how to defend it and OU began blowing people away but by the end of the year those blowouts became few and far between. I'm not saying the spread doesn't work because any offense can work with the right personal, but there is a combination of factors that are going to limit the success in the SEC and one is that everyone in the SEC can play defense and virtually everyone is running some form of the spread.
Trix,
The difference between the offense Texas runs and the spread is that Texas really running a form of the west coast offense that has some spread formations, but it is not the spread. The bread and butter play for the Texas offense is the zone read where Vince has the option of either handing off to the tailback or keeping it. Texas is primarily a running team but uses the spread formations to keep the defense from stacking too many people in the box. The success Texas has had passing the ball has come from teams keeping 8 men in the box and freeing up the middle of the field. It also helps having receivers that know what they are supposed to do.

Lefty, I'm just repeating what I've been told. Yeah, I thought it was kind of strange, but that's what I've read.
True but you didn't have the defense in 99 that you had in 2k. That was as much a difference as the spread.
Keep in mind that I'm not saying that UF or Meyers doesn't deserve a chance to get his schemes and personalle in place, but the Spread in 2k5 is not the same as the Spread in 99. Back in 99 few teams used the Spread, in 2k5 almost every team in the country uses some spread formations, or some variation of the Spread. Today every DC has seen it. I just happen to think that the one used by Meyer is too much of a gimic offense.
Now the one used by Boisie State, that is a nasty offense.

Uhhhh........let me guess....out of the shotgun?
You either don't know what Meyer does or you don't understand that YOU use the spread option. Its the same thing.

I can't remember where I read it, but I know that it has changed from last season to this one. I just can't remember which way it changed. Maybe T REX knows.

If you call putting the football in the arms of the runningback and then taking it out again an option then fine it is an option play. But Texas has other plays they call an option where the QB is required to pitch the ball. That to me is an option. Texas never runs that play cause Vince can't pitch worth a damn. That option play takes tons of practice to perfect, the only reason Texas has it in their play book is because it forces opposing defenses to have to spend practice time learning to defending it.
The biggest difference between the two is that the zone read relies on the ball going in one of two different directions either between the tackles with the runningback or outside the tackle with the QB. The spread option I've seen Meyers run always has the ball going outside the tackles.
M Club wrote:I've seen Phantom Holding Calls ruin a 7-5 team's undefeated season.
PSU ran the option well with Zack Mills. Robinson isn't a good option QB, so they have eliminated it - he runs QB draws 10-20 times a game. If they have the pass working a bit, it's a good play. With D-Wheels out, someone will have to step up...

It is since you have the OPTION of keeping it or handing it off. It is one of the wrinkles in the spread option. Unfortunately, Leak can't run at all and it practically destroys the offense when the QB is NEVER a threat. I do blame Meyer for not adjusting. Granted we have had some injuries but UF had the number 1 ranked offense if the SEC last year. He has a tough decision ahead......Leak or change the offense and set yourself back a year.
The only other thing is that Leak's shoulder is really screwed up and they are down playing it. Not sure.

Who made the line calls last year, as opposed to this year. One year it was Leak, the other it was the center. I just can't remember which year is which.
