Recruiting Question

Post by Terry in Crapchester »

I know a lot of you guys know a lot more about recruiting than I do, so maybe one of you can help me out here. Seems to me that what Pitt did here is against NCAA rules, keeping in mind that this kid is only a high school sophomore. Can somebody help me out?

Pittsburgh offers ride to Churchville-Chili sophomore

Jeff DiVeronica

(October 20, 2005) — RIGA — Area high school football fans might recognize Averin Collier's last name because his brother, Kevin, has been Churchville-Chili's star running back for two seasons.

But the University of Pittsburgh, where Kevin plans to play, already knows all about Averin.

In fact, Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt has been so impressed with what he has seen and heard about Averin that Wannstedt offered the sophomore a scholarship Tuesday night.

"We were just talking about football and life and the next thing you know I hear, 'You know, you have an offer here at Pitt, right?' I was at a loss for words," Averin said about his speakerphone conversation with Wannstedt and Pitt assistant David Walker, the former Irondequoit High star and longtime Syracuse University assistant who was key in Kevin's recruitment.

Wannstedt was serious.

He had spoken on Monday with C-C football coach Paul Dick about Averin,
a 5-foot-11, 195-pound middle linebacker and wide receiver who is also a dangerous kick returner. But Averin didn't give a verbal commitment to Pitt the way his brother did earlier this fall. Kevin has run for 1,315 yards to move him to No. 2 on Section V's all-time rushing list with 4,777.

Fifth-seeded C-C (4-3) next faces No. 1 Pittsford (7-0) in a 1 p.m. Section V Class AAA semifinal Sunday at St. John Fisher.

"I would love to go there (Pitt)," Averin said, "but I have two years left. There could be other offers."

And they usually keep coming until a recruit signs, as Kevin plans to Feb. 2. USC called Dick this week again about Kevin, as did South Carolina.

"For his age (15), Averin is way ahead of where Kevin was. Kevin was on the freshman team," Dick said. "Pitt has seen his speed, his athleticism, how physical he can play and that he plays more than one position."

Averin has played mostly receiver and is a big hitter defensively. He started the season with four TDs in a 32-14 win. Each score came in a different way: rushing, receiving, kick return and punt return. He has scored eight of the last 13 times he has touched the ball (6 TDs, 2 two-point conversion catches). He has 198 yards rushing (32 carries) and 335 receiving (20 catches).

"I'm happy for him," Kevin said of his brother's offer from Pitt. "We both might have the opportunity for a free education and play together again."

Chris Leak was offered a scholarship by Wake Forrest as an 8th grader. Myrone Rolle was offerd by Stoops after he camped at OU before his Soph. year. Wanny is within the rules.

Now he just has to not mention his name during a presser, like he did Darrin Walls.

I think that you can't offer in writing or something like that. Verbal stuff is allowed.

You can offer a kid a ride any time you want too. However, it doesn't mean crap until that first Wed in Feb when the kid signs on the line. Until then it is just talk.

One of the reasons I'm not so hot on self-proclaimed recruiting gurus. There's a tendency to rush to rank kids at an ever younger age.

didnt he see that they lost? I mean if a kid is looking at 2 schools and goes to a game where the 2 schools are playing, wouldnt he want to go to the school that won?

then someone tell the guy that its colder than a witches titty in South Bend and the only thing colder than the weather is the frigid cunts there in South Bend. He can come to Los Angeles where its always warm and sunny and he doesnt have to take a class where someone is blowing smoke up his ass about the invisible man who lives up in the clouds who needs money

Actually I think there are two things that affect the 5-star kids. direction of the program and early playing time. And not in that order.

But I can see what BTH is talking about, for the last 5 years Texas has been losing to OU but still holding their own in recruiting.

For these 5* kids, they all think that they're going to be the one that turns it around. It's more about the atmosphere and how they like the people they met there.
Bingo...

I met and had a great time with JoJo Townsell... when I was being recruited...

I almost became a baby bear...

The Clausens also think ND has a great shot at him.

And it wasn't an official visit. Only seniors can take official visits.

As for McCoy, he wasn't being driven around South Bend in a limo. There also isn't a "Golden Dome Awards" dinner, either.
